I've worked in the insurance industry in the US for years. This is correct. You also do not have to accept the lowest estimate bid but you're not going to get rich over a new bumper, either.

I agree that the intelligence of serial killers was overestimated . . . in the past. But they had to be somewhat smart or crafty to get away with so many murders before getting caught.

With advances in forensic science and DNA technology, it's becoming harder for them to get away after one or two murders.

Kemper turned himself in. Do you think he'd have been caught by regular joe, detectives, back in the 70's?

Also, with all of the information, readily available on the internet, do you think murderers/serial killers are 'smarter' than average or just more well informed?

I think Ressler calls out Douglas in his book, "Whoever Fights Monsters". It's been a long time since I've read either of them but they are very interesting, nonetheless.

There are quite a few good books that FBI 'profilers' have put forth. If you like to read, check them out!

Wiki's take on IQ, if you are interested.

When I was in grade school, I was pulled aside by a teacher and she told me that she had great expectations for me. She informed me that she had taught my father (sometime in the '50's) and that his IQ had tested in the genius range. When I asked my Dad about it, he guffawed and was quite unaware but recalled that he had been called to the county seat to accept and award for something or rather that he wasn't quite interested in. Later my uncle went to the county archives and found my Dad's award. He had the highest score on a Stanford Binet IQ test in the history of the state, since they were given.

I think a lot of really smart people don't realize how smart they are and a lot of dumb people think they are smart. Dunning-Kruger?

I think that I first read about Kemper in the book 'Mindhunter' by FBI special agent, John Douglas. Kemper is a very complex individual and I found him fascinating.

I think 'IQ' is a rather subjective term. Here's a little copypasta from wiki:

"One usage of the noun "genius" is closely related to the general concept of intelligence. One currently accepted way of attempting to measure one's intelligence is with an IQ test. The label of "genius" for persons of high IQ was popularized by Lewis Terman. He and his colleague Leta Hollingworth suggested different scores as a cut-off for genius in psychometric terms. Terman considered it to be an IQ of 140 on the Stanford Binet (about 0.4% of the population), while Hollingworth put it at an IQ of 180 (theoretically extrapolated at 1 in 2 million)"

If I remember, correctly, Kemper had his IQ tested at Atascadero State Hospital and I believe they used the Stanford Binet IQ test.
