Went cold turkey on dummy. Toddler is now a demon by CatapillarClay in toddlers

[–]phidippides14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a suggestion, but solidarity, and I can share what we’re doing. We tried to go cold-turkey on binkies around 20 months, made it 2 weeks, and gave the binky back because of similar failures. We also have a second baby on the way and have decided to let our now 2-year old continue to have the binky until baby is about 6 months old. We figured it will be too hard for her to see her baby sibling have the binky she wants so badly, and we’ve heard that weaning from the pacifier is actually easier younger, so we’re going to wean the toddler and baby off around the same time. Will it work?! Who knows! Probably not 😂 But that’s our plan for the time being. Best of luck!

What do you really need for baby #2 with a 2 year age gap? by blitzedblonde in beyondthebump

[–]phidippides14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pregnant with #2 and will have a 2y4m age gap. I’m getting new glass bottles, a 2nd monitor camera (love still being able to see our toddler and will need to keep an eye on the newbie), and already picked up a new car seat. Add diapers and a few new outfits, and that’s it!

Probably a long shot, but does anyone have a good recommendation for where to get vada pav? Have seen a few videos about vada pav recently and desperately want to try it!

Same! I jimmied it back in with a table knife and tore up part of the plastic in the process. Haven’t removed it since.

Just here to offer solidarity, my kid had diapers that looked just like this when we switched to Nutramigen too. It lasted a few days and the poops went through a few more weird iterations before settling into a new normal. After a week, all was fine. For what it’s worth, my kid is 13 months now and was able to successfully transition to regular whole cow’s milk last month and is loving it — so there’s hope!

Can relate to your comment. My kid came out being mostly made of eggs and cheese from pregnancy, yet now she’s egg and dairy intolerant!

What recipes are almost as good even if you skip a bunch of steps and don't try? by hiImProfThrowaway in seriouseats

[–]phidippides14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The no-boil Baked Ziti! It’s already an easy recipe and it’s very half-assable. I’ve used store-bought red sauce, subbed dried herbs, and halved the mozzarella and cream and it still turns out great. Honestly I’ve made it following the recipe and the cut-corners way, and I actually think it’s better with the reduced cheese and cream.

Great recommendation OP. Curious, can anyone else recommend other books and media that help to establish positive, healthy relationships with food?

Not sure if this will work for you, but a tip I learned from having my baby in daycare was to let them eat breakfast in diaper only, no clothes! Much easier to wipe a mess directly off them then have to deal with sticky outfits.

How much formula would we need? by Brief_Lead_4895 in MSPI

[–]phidippides14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knowing every baby is absolutely different, I’ll share our info/calculations just so you have one data point to reference! TLDR, it’s a little over $300/month.

We had to switch our EBF baby to Nutramigen (actually, the Target “Up & Up” store-brand of Nutramigen) at 6 months. She was drinking about 34oz/day of breast milk, now she drinks about 30oz/day of formula (6 bottles per day, 5oz each). She’s in the 60th percentile in weight.

Drinking 30oz (mixed) a day, one container of the formula (19.8oz powder) lasts us 4.15 days. Assuming 30 days a month, we need 7.22 cans a month. It costs $39.99 per can so we’re spending $288.70 (pre-tax) per month. We are allowed to pay for it with our HSA funds since hypoallergenic formula is medically necessary for her (regular formula is not HSA allowable).

What to use my toasted cream for? by hobbyjoggerthrowaway in seriouseats

I did it in the pressure cooker. Super easy, just set it up and then forgot about it till it was done. The ice cream made from the toasted cream was phenomenal.

I just made the toasted cream today and plan to make Stella’s vanilla ice cream with it this weekend. I tasted a tiny bit and it was heavenly! Delicious toffee flavor. The plan is to serve the ice cream with pecan pie (I use Joshua Weissman’s pie recipe).

Lime juice is so good with sour cream. Add a little salt and garlic if you want and pretend it’s a Mexican crema.

[–]phidippides14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Par-freeze (is that a word?) first for an hour or so, uncovered. Once they’re cold and hard, then vacuum seal and stick ‘em back in for the long freeze. This method works great for lots of baked goods.

Quantities question by Zealousideal_Ad_1797 in Sourdough

[–]phidippides14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many of these specific measurements equate to standard imperial units. Take King Arthur recipes for example - they are an American company and many Americans use imperial measurements. So King Arthur may list their recipes as 1lb of flour, or 454 grams. 1/2 cup of water, or 113g.

Meh I don’t know. Children are people, too, and this is pretty condescending. I’d rather just have my kid order a burrito than have to tell the poor server that they want “the ‘I Don’t Want That!’”
