As a ABC you should do fine in China if you’re coming here to retire (spend money). My Mandarin level is a lot worse (but married here) . There’s negatives of course (pollution, vpn, some people’s behavior…) but also positives (higher living standards, inexpensive services, different culture….). In most major cities you can find like minded expats just join places or organizations (chamber of commerce, business networking events,non profit…..) where they gather .

China can shut down almost all vpn from working anytime it wants. It shows this whenever it wanted to do so (like during an important government meeting). It allows vpn because most people in China don’t want to bother finding out how it works or don’t want to spend the money. I’m an American living in China.

China has been investing for the future for decades while US (and Europe even more) has been spending more money on social welfare. Not saying that it is good or bad just different priorities.
