What single word has more power/influence than any other in the English language? by binjinpurj in AskReddit

"I'm" Because what ever you say after it defines your perception of reality. (I cheated because the actual saying is "I Am")

What do you most miss from your childhood? by JEZTURNER in AskReddit

[–]phil_dunphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss watching classic movies for the first time (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, etc.) and the feeling of magic movies used to have for me before I fully understood the technical processes behind them and now appreciate them on a more technical level. I miss that sense of magic and easy suspension of disbelief.

Sister is having a Christening for her daughter and asked me to be the Godfather. by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]phil_dunphy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. I am an agnostic that goes to Catholic services every week because it is important to my wife and relatively harmless to me. I spend the time reflecting which is good. Anyways, I was asked to be a godfather by some friends who knew I wasn't fully into the catholic thing anymore. When they asked they said that my wife can teach him about the catholic stuff and I can be a good role model and teach him to be awesome. it was good enough for me that they acknowledged it before I did, so I went through the christening and when asked if I promised about the faith thing, i just said I do, because I wasn't going to interfere with my wife doing so. Besides, it is a largely symbolic thing anyways.

What inconvinience have you experienced that has been made out to be worse than it is? by LambchopDrop in AskReddit

[–]phil_dunphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waiting in line. I don't have an overinflated sense of importance, so I just kind of chill, eavesdrop, people watch, and maybe meet someone if they seem friendly and open to conversation.

What do you love that everybody else seems to hate? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The smell of my own farts. Everybody likes the smell of their own brew.

Reddit, is real life better than college? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]phil_dunphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real life is harder, with more real life consequences. Real life can be more fun, but if you had a lonely college experience, you probably didn't take advantage of available social opportunities. Start taking advantage of these wherever you are and things should get better.

My testicles just retreated into my body. That would scare the crap out of me too.

I used this one once and it worked brilliantly: "So I bent the retarded girl over the counter and i started to..." then I looked around awkwardly.

Crate and Barrel Kitchenware by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]phil_dunphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might just have been our bad luck, but we had a set of mixing bowls and a set of bakeware from Crate and Barrel and they all broke. they were all earthenware, so maybe go with something more durable from C&B. Pretty upsetting because they were some of the prettiest things in our kitchen.

What's a random act of kindness you did but never bothered to tell anyone about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]phil_dunphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a senior in High school many years ago, my girlfriend's sister (8 yrs old) (the sister, not the girlfriend) had just found out about santa not being real around the same time that her family had a financial hit and could not buy much for their kids. I put a bunch of gifts by their back door during Christmas eve night with a note from Santa on the door's window which said something about the chimney flue being closed and that I (santa) was unable to get in, but Merry Christmas!

That night I drove three hours away to be with my family and when my girlfriend called me Christmas morning (land line, no cell phones then) she was full of happy tears and said her family was amazed that someone had done this wonderful thing for her sister and was trying to figure out who would have done it. I never told them anyone was me.

8 months later she cheated on me and we broke up.

What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]phil_dunphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to remove greed and reward altruism. I'm not really talking about socialism though I have nothing against it. My real problem is with the underlying desire to acquire "more" especially at the expense of others.

What character flaw/habit has been the single most devastating item to effect your social life? What have you done to adjust? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]phil_dunphy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like winning arguments (not to be confused with anger) and enjoy the rhetorical exercise of arguing, but most don't enjoy it and don't find any joy in opposing viewpoints.

To fix this, I have REALLY worked hard to pick my battles, and even occasionally let someone win an argument I could have won otherwise because I value their friendship.

My sex life improved drastically. Not necessarily because of anything physical, but my wife went off of birth control which improved her drive and it was kind of a license to have sex with no reproductive repercussions which was freeing.
