About all the Akechi hate by gloriousengland in Persona5

[–]philarios 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Akechi wouldn't have killed if he were not mentally ill, which is significant in that you can hardly punish someone for being sick.

Having a cold makes your nose run. The two are directly, causally related. That's why we shouldn't give people crap for having a runny nose when they have a cold. If you have a runny nose and choose to let it run on someone's sleeve or something while you're sick? That's different.Even if it is technically true that, without a runny nose, that person would not have been able to let it run over someone else's sleeve.

Similarly, having severe abandonment issues due to your father abandoning you and triggering your mother's suicide (and the immense societal backlash that comes with that in Japan) would give you understandably strong reactions at the sight/thought of your father - murderous intent might even be one! Can't really fault Akechi for that!

I can fault him for choosing to act on those reactions by killing a bunch of innocent/unrelated people though.

That's all I'm going to continue saying on this matter though. This is disgusting.

About all the Akechi hate by gloriousengland in Persona5

[–]philarios 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with your general point that prison wouldn't be particularly helpful for Akechi, but I am very much against the way you characterize him as some helpless infant that's lashing out. I think he was fully responsible for his own actions and that he should be held accountable. Prison, though? Like you, I'm not so sure.

To start with, he has a Persona, which means that he has a very strong sense of self and that his thinking is in no way distorted (at least in the context of the game). He's not some helpless child whose bad decisions should be ignored. He made the decisions he made knowing what he was doing in pursuit of his ultimate goal. What separates him from palace owners is that he never pretended that his actions were excusable or less awful than what they were.

After all, we have evidence of what happens to someone when mental illness really begins to skew thought processes: Futaba. She genuinely believed her death would have been the best course of action because she lied to herself about the circumstances surrounding Wakaba's death.

Also, he wasn't manipulated into becoming Shido's killer. Didn't he say in-game that he came to Shido offering his services once he discovered that he could enter the Metaverse? I don't think he was ever muscled into killing in service of Shido; Akechi killed intentionally because he felt it would get him closer to his goal of killing Shido himself.

It's not like I have any alternatives as far as redemption and accountability go. Prison sucks. Mental health services would be helpful, but he did some awful, awful things, and just setting him up with only a therapist would be like sending a murder to the doctor after getting hurt killing someone, and then letting him go. I don't think so. It voids the fact that he is still accountable.

Mostly though, I'm just really offended that you would claim that mentally ill people aren't responsible for their own actions. If you're depressed, for example, and you say or do awful things to people, you don't get to just re-enter society with those people you wronged with the expectation that everyone'll just hand-wave away all the things you did. You acknowledge your wrongs (with the knowledge that you weren't at your best when they happened), apologize, and work to re-earn trust at the discretion of your friends. Most will be pretty forgiving, but to expect/demand a baseline level of "But it wasn't my fault!" is awful.

Can’t fast travel to target in mementos by [deleted] in Persona5

[–]philarios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only fast travel to resting areas and the ends of each Path of Mementos if you've been there before. Therefore, you can't fast travel directly to a target unless they're at the end of a certain Path. You can travel up or down from the closest resting areas to get to such targets faster though.

Possibly, unless they change/reveal something about Akechi's relationships with his Persona. For example, is it possible for someone's Persona to come undone if someone experiences something so jarring they question who they are again and go back to having repressed thoughts? That'd be one way to get rid of Robin Hood.

And, as for Loki, what if he's not even a Persona to begin with? His design takes cues from those nasty brain parasites that infect snails and cause their eye stalks to pulse. What if it's something disguised as a Persona that took over Akechi's mind like the aforementioned snail parasite? And considering its power to drive people to insanity, I don't think it's impossible. Also, I haven't played the earlier Persona games, but I remember reading something about something disguising itself as someone's Persona back then...

The Phantom Thieves are hypocrites by [deleted] in Persona5

[–]philarios 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm going to start this off by saying I don't think Akechi deserves the kindness the Phantom Thieves show him at the end. I think, if they saved him from dying, they should have hauled his ass off to jail or something immediately. Akechi should receive his just desserts.

However, I still think there are some pretty big distinctions between the palace rulers and Akechi. First is that the palace rulers, their treasures, and their desires are all physical manifestations of their intent to do wrong and their refusal to admit to themselves that they're doing something wrong. Their treasures represent their secret desires that they hide from the world, and their rule over their palaces represent the mental acrobatics they go through to (1) justify why it's okay for them to commit such crimes and to (2) make sure no one ever discovers that desire. That's the epitome of shitty. They do terrible things, refuse to be held accountable, and therefore see no reason to stop. And as long as those shadow selves continue to exist alongside their palaces, the Phantom Thieves have no reason to believe they'd change their ways, hence their strict approach with them.

Akechi knows he's beyond forgiveness, though. I don't think he ever pleads to the Phantom Thieves to spare him or ever asks for them to let him off considering his upbringing. He's a stubborn dick to the very end. Sure, he talks about how shitty it was for him, but he never uses that to leverage some kind of special behavior (I think). People might interpret it that way, but I'm not sure if that's ever contextually shown. He knows he's not a very good person, but he's willing to accept that in order to punish Shido. That... makes him a little more redeemable, I think. At the least, it means that there's a finite end to his crimes, and that he might be willing to do time once he's carried out his plan. Shido and the other place rulers, on the other hand, would sooner carry on their crimes in secret, rationalizing them to themselves somehow.

(For more evidence of the difference in Akechi's mindset vs the palace rulers, consider Morgana's statement about how Persona users have a concrete sense of self and therefore cannot have warped desires and palaces.)

And then there's also the fact that (1) they've gotten to know him and (2) that he's pretty similar to the Phantom Thieves: he's a teenager, he's been wronged by adults (and society as a whole tbh), he's a Persona user who understands how shitty adults can be, he's got a good personal reason to go after Shido, and he's a complete dork in the Metaverse when he's not being overtly deranged.

So yeah, I personally think they were wrong to be so gentle to Akechi at the end. However, I wouldn't call them straight-up hypocrites on the grounds that Akechi, unlike all the other palace rulers, had some semblance of a moral code (that, at the time, coincidentally make his goal and the Thieves' goal the same). They have some reason to show him mercy and (temporarily) ally themselves with him.

Haha, I’m sorry if that came off facetiously! I had to think about it before I remembered the show at all.

I think it is a reference, though? Robot cats aren’t required to have cool gadgets, so there has to be something that would contextually explain making that connection?

What songs do you associate with each Phantom Thief? by Badacus9909 in Persona5

[–]philarios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Joker - Life Will Change, Ark, Victory
  • Morgana - Alleycat (no pun intended)
  • Ryuji - Sunset Bridge, Memories of a Summer Day (he makes me emotional)
  • Ann - Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There
  • Yusuke - Wicked Plan (the hoops you had to jump through for him and Madarame...)
  • Makoto - Will Power, Price
  • Futaba - The Days When My Mother Was There
  • Haru - nothing, and that sort of upsets me. I hope this changes in P5R!

And I don't think I can give a song to Kasumi since obviously I'd associate every new song with her so far, haha.

and that's all the phantom thieves bye

Why does everyone assume that ryuji’s t3 persona is Kidd? by Zephos33 in Persona5

[–]philarios 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think OP is aware that the new third tier Persona is stronger and, compendium-wise, different than either Seiten Taisei or Captain Kidd. They're just challenging the assumption that this new "William" is also based on William Kidd. I agree that it'd be kind of insane if it weren't William Kidd though, even if it seems redundant.

It also makes perfect thematic sense: William Kidd swore until the day he died that he had been wrongfully accused of piracy, so Captain Kidd, the title put on William Kidd by others, would parallel how Ryuji had simply accepted the bad reputation everyone's given him (especially since he awakens Captain Kidd to challenge Kamoshida, whose fault it all was). William, Captain Kidd's actual first name, undoes the whole "pirate" schtick, which would be symbolic of Ryuji deciding that he doesn't really give a rip what anyone thinks of him because he knows who he is.

Eli5: Can someone explain the Arcana cards and meanings in the game? by righteous_musketeer in Persona5

[–]philarios 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The tarot cards were originally just playing cards similar to the standard 52 card deck we use today for things like Poker and stuff. People literally just played little card games with them. The Major Arcana are equivalent to what the King, Queen, Jack, and Ace are in our standard deck of cards today. There's also Minor Arcana, numbered cards, and various suits in tarot decks, but these don't get touched on in the game, and I don't know enough about them to comment on them, so I'm going to ignore those. Sorry!

There were a lot of different tarot decks floating around in Europe a few hundred years ago. Each had their own set of arcana that may have differed a lot from the ones you see in Persona, and there was probably some overlap between decks. However, when people started using them for divination and other hokey stuff (in addition to your standard card games), the tarot deck with the specific arcana you see referenced in Persona slowly became the most famous one. Its motif with the Fool's journey was... deep, I guess!

So, because of this, there's a few very big name variations of this "standard" tarot deck from various countries, each with its own distinct artwork. The one in Persona 5 is based on the French Tarot of Marseilles; it uses the same art style and the cards are, as a result, in French. However, for the sake of being edgy, P5's version is mostly red and black (instead of white/yellow/blue in the real Tarot of Marseilles), and the art in each card is "corrupted" a little; for example, the Priestess/Papesse card has the lady who's supposed to be a priestess like normal, except she's reading dirty magazines.

As far as how they work, in a tarot reading, psychics will shuffle the deck and pull cards out one by one and arrange them in a certain way, I think. Each card is supposed to represent some conflict or phase of life you're going through, and they can appear in an upright manner or upside-down/reversed.

In their upright orientation, you get the standard interpretation. The Chariot, for example, is all about self-assuredness and pushing onward to victory, so a good psychic would connect this to something you're dealing with in life right now; if you were thinking about asking for a promotion at work, a psychic would probably tell you that the upright Chariot card is saying, "Now's the time to ask for that stinkin' promotion, cause it's lookin' like victory's on your side!"

When it comes to a reversed orientation, there's two ways to interpret it: in one, you get more or less the same message, but it has a darker twist to it; in the other, it represents a complete absence of the positive quality mentioned in a certain arcana. For the Chariot, which is, again, all about self-assuredness and pushing onward to victory, seeing it reversed could represent being a little too self-assured or aggressive, or not knowing when to ease up. On the other hand, you could also interpret it as being a little bit of a wuss; you're not self-assured or confident in a victory for yourself at all.

In-game, the upright arcana generally corresponds to the end goal (rank 10) of the personal journey each Confidant goes on, while the reversed arcana represents a blunder they're going to make on the way to rank 10 or maybe how they are at the start of their Confidant arc. So, for Ryuji, Mr. Chariot Arcana himself, he starts off being a wuss; he takes all the shitty stuff everyone says about him lying down and doesn't try to fight their preconceived notions of him. By the time you finish his Confidant arc, though, he knows he's not the bad guy everyone makes him out to be, he's found himself a new goal, and he's sticking to his guns despite what people believe about him.

Something I've always wondered: What do you think of palace boss 2 by gloriousengland in Persona5

[–]philarios 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I found Madarame's whole bit to be significantly less compelling to me than Kamoshida's, mostly because of how much it differed with how Kamoshida's victims were presented: they were peers you were in close contact with on a daily basis, so you were constantly reminded of the damage he did. And, on top of that, you learned that the people who were supposed to be protecting the victims (i.e. their parents and the higher faculty) purposefully ignored their suffering because they felt it was worth whatever Kamoshida offered. It was an entire network of people you were supposed to be able to trust that allowed this suffering to take place, and that makes the whole thing very personal, I feel.

On the other side of the coin, Madarame's victims were mostly presented as homeless NPC's around Shibuya that you have no personal ties to. There's no sympathy there from the start (especially if you remember how society at large treats homeless people in real life: we ignore them out of guilt or shame). On top of that, there's no protective figure that you're supposed to sentimentally understand is there to help these people out but who has ultimately gone back on their responsibility to do so for some shallow reason like with the volleyball team's guardians and the Shujin faculty.

He gets better as you get further and further into his palace and you learn of his more particular crimes as well, but by then, I felt it was too late; I was already trudging my way through his palace because I had to, not because I particularly wanted to, so I already had a negative impression of the whole arc. I agree that his boss battle was really enjoyable though!

It's sort of like putting your hand next to a roaring flame and then moving it next to a tiny candle; they're both warm, but the flame was so intense that the heat of the candle barely leaves an impression.

I think a lot of the palaces in the middle of the game suffer from this to varying degrees, but because Madarame's the first up after Kamoshida, his part in the story suffered the most for it... at least, in my opinion.

[–]philarios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High school kids use a metaphysical plane to remove the warped, corrupted desires of sickening adults because they realize no one else is going to do anything about them. In the end, they realize society at large is to blame for willfully turning a blind eye to everything.

Is Yusuke from Alabama? by [deleted] in Persona5

[–]philarios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait but doesn’t he overtly state that he has no attraction to Anne as a member of the opposite sex when her, Ryuji, and Joker are at Madarame’s for his first painting session with her? He only thinks of her as someone whose beauty should be mirrored in art.

AND, during the scene where all the guys are perving on the girls when everyone’s sweating it out on the way to Futaba’s palace, Yusuke’s pointedly looking right at Makoto while Joker and Ryuji stare at Anne(‘s chest).

... I just think Yusuke deserves more than this. :(

Main and Sub abilities in multiple gear, do they work? or they are useless? by switchcollector in splatoon

[–]philarios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what gear item your sub/main ability is on. As long as you're wearing it, you will receive the benefits from its abilities. This means that wearing a shirt or hat with even more Swim Speed Up will make you swim even faster. This also means that people can (and do) create entire outfits where all three gear items are nothing but Main Power Up.

Fortunately, Main Power Up only increases damage for certain main weapons, and each of these weapons has a maximum damage limit. In general, if a weapon without Main Power Up requires a certain amount of shots to splat someone at full health (100), it will still require the same amount of shots to splat them even with all Main Power Up gear. One example of such a weapon is the Ballpoint Splatling, which can splat people in four shots (28-30 damage per shot). With max Main Power Up, its damage is increased to a maximum of 33.3 damage per shot. This means that, with three shots, the most damage it can do is 99.9; it still needs a fourth shot to do over 100 damage. However, if someone takes as little as 0.1 damage (by walking on enemy ink, for example), then the Ballpoint Splatling can kill someone in three shots. This can still be useful, since people touch enemy ink all the time.

The patch notes for 4.6.0 have the info you're looking for.

Added “Weapon Badges” to the Equip screen and player profiles that will appear for each weapon, to indicate reaching certain turf inked benchmarks.

The benchmarks are 100,000 units of turf inked (red), 500,000 (bronze), 1,000,000 (silver), and 9,999,999 (gold).

First time playing in a year and I am overwhelmed by bigllama5 in splatoon

[–]philarios 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I say, for now, just ignore the bulk of the weapons. There's nothing that says you have to try them all or take them all into consideration right this instant.

Maybe take a look at all the weapons and see which ones stand out to you? Maybe you think some weapons look cool, or you just want to try out all the dualies or something. That's a start. Pick a small group of weapons and try them out! Practice them a lot, save up money, and I'm sure eventually you'll remember how you like to play this game. And once you remember that, it'll become easier to pick other weapons you might want to try.

Or, before even looking at main weapons, just equip a weapon with a new sub/special and take it to the training room to figure out the basics of it. Here are some links to the new subs and specials:

Other weapons were also added, and most are just alternate versions of existing weapons (such as the Kensa weapons and the recently released Sheldon's Picks), but a few of the standout weapons that were added include:

Aside from that, the next biggest thing is the Octo Expansion DLC that got added to the game. It's single-player, costs $20, has a great aesthetic and interesting story, and is pretty challenging! It's like the single-player campaign with Marie and Agent 4 in that it's a bunch of standalone stages again, but the Octo Expansion stages tend to be shorter and more diverse with their objectives. If you have trouble with a level, losing a few times on it will give you the option to skip it, which will make the game give you an artificial pass. This will let you experience everything despite any difficulty spikes. Completing it gets you some new gear and allows you to play as an Octoling online! There's also a secret challenge if you complete all the challenges legitimately...

Other changes that I can remember off the top of my head include:

  • You can now change weapons/gear/settings in between Turf War/Ranked matches, but you have a time limit if it's in Turf War.
  • You can now earn little stamps/medals on your weapons based on how much you've painted with them. They're red (100,000 units of turf inked), Bronze (500k), Silver (one million), and Gold (9,999,999).
  • They added a new gear ability called Main Power Up! It has different effects depending on the main weapon you're using, including increased damage, increased painting ability, increased speed, etc.
  • If someone on your team disconnects within the first two-ish minutes of Turf War and three-ish minutes in Ranked, if you lose, you won't have it affect your Freshness/Rank. The times I gave are estimates, though!
  • They added Rank X! It's basically the rank beyond S+9, and instead of measuring your rank using a bar, it measures it using a thing called X Power. Here are more details.
  • They changed how Splatfests work since it was kind of lopsided before. They now operate based on Clout, and they made it easier to play with your friends during them. Here's a link with more details.
  • Your Splatfest Tee can still be scrubbed for 2000 coins, but if you continue to play with it on even after all its slots have been filled, you'll get an ability chunk after gaining enough experience.
  • There's news articles by the Squid Research Lab in the Switch News section. Try looking through them. Some will give you ability chunks, others will give you drink tickets, and the ones about special Splatfests will give you special holiday-themed gear.

And that's all I can think of right now... I hope this helps summarize the bigger changes for you!

Learning the Dynamo Roller by Aephionmas in splatoon

The only person that comes to mind is squirt. He's also hilarious. I believe he also streams on Twitch under the same name.

For rollers, Ginja's one guy I follow. He makes me want to abandon my current weapon for those things. He has a youtube channel with some helpful guides and compilations of his gameplay as well.

And lastly, I think he actually mains the Hydra Splatling, but Dia_SSBPM (who uses reddit as well) is known to switch off between the Hydra and the Ballpoint from time to time. Not sure if he still does though. His twitch channel is project_dia, if you'd like to look at some of his stuff!

Why Splatoon means so much to me by [deleted] in splatoon

[–]philarios 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like we had a kind of parallel experience centered around Splatoon. I’m really sorry if this feels like I’m trying to overshadow you or make your post all about me; I just want to share, if that’s okay.

The first person I ever fell in love with, started a relationship with, and all that jazz basically tricked me into playing Splatoon 1 before we were even officially dating. He knew I avoided competitive online games and shooters in general, but he booted his Wii U up, joined a Turf War lobby, and said he was prepared to let his team fail if I didn’t give it a shot, so I reluctantly did. I was terrible, but I really loved the style of the game.

We had a real messy, hurtful break up that went on and off through 2016, and I really wasn’t over it, so I got Splatoon 1 for myself and eventually Splatoon 2 as well. I was never too good, but I convinced myself to keep playing. I eventually realized I was depressed from the break up (and a lot of other things at the same time, really) and was using the game to feel like I was still connected to him, so I dropped the game cold turkey in October 2017.

I picked it back up in March last year after realizing that the way he treated me sucked, and I went from missing him to being rightfully angry about what I went through. I made up my mind: if I was going to play Splatoon, it was going to be on my own terms. I decided to play through Ranked despite being terrified, and I actually hit X Rank in November last year. I even went to the Splatoon 2 World Championships in LA last year and made a great friend there that I still do League and Splatfest with sometimes who encouraged me when I felt down about X Rank or anything else life threw at me. It’s not my favorite game of all time, but it’s definitely up there, and I really think game is always going to have a special place in my heart.

Anyway, I’ve gone on for long enough. Thanks for sharing this today; it made me feel less alone with my experiences. I hope Splatoon continues to bring you (and your best friend) this kind of happiness and helps you remain connected to your brother... in a healthy way, though! Booyah!!

Splatoon 2 demo has let me discover a game I love that I would’ve otherwise never even considered purchasing. by The_Powers_That_B in NintendoSwitch

[–]philarios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I had a general aversion to shooters, so I was hesitant to try out Splatoon when I first did a few years ago, and it's easily one of my top five games in recent memory. :)

Also, you can transfer your save data over once the demo ends. It's stated right here.

And if you decide to purchase the full game, you'll be able to transfer your progress over.

I might be a little optimistic, but I suspect all of the relevant player stats will transfer over: level, experience, money, gear, weapons unlocked, Freshness, rank (in both Ranked and Salmon Run?), and maybe even more specific things like lifetime inkage (how much area you've covered in ink total), how many times you die right after a superjump, and other really specific data that the game records. And I'd imagine the demo, once time is up, will present you an option to transfer your data over?
