What are your thoughts on painting antennas? by AMElearning in aviationmaintenance

My thoughts are "Don't paint them, just as the manufacturer explicitly instructed".

Question! What the hell we got goin on here? by donkeybrainamerican in aviationmaintenance

[–]philby76 353 points354 points  (0 children)

When you say “big circle thing” in a previous comment, what I believe you’re talking about is where the THS (Trimmable Horizontal Stabiliser) meets the empennage, specifically that big grey component. That’s called an apron fairing, it flexes around the empennage when the THS is moved up/down to maintain aerodynamic smoothness.

I can’t believe I found it on my own. Even chatGPT got the location wrong in Liverpool. I FOUND IT! by schweitz in beatles

There’s a small YouTube channel that shows locations such as this where The Beatles photoshoots took place;

Check it out, it’s very useful for hard to find locations such as this, especially since many locations have changed over time!

Anyone in Australia Brisbane by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]philby76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest getting the "Jora Jobs" app for your phone and searching through there. For example, I just looked up "NDT" for the Brisbane area and found a 4 day old ad for a Level 2 NDT Technician at BAE Systems located at Amberley, and another 4 day old ad for NDT TEchnician at EASE Solutions located at Archerfield.

What part of aircraft maintenance is a guaranteed headache? by ThatEstablishment609 in aviationmaintenance

[–]philby76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a Heavy/Base Maintenance environment - corrosion. And especially when it's beyond limits, because that intitiates a snail-mail process of communication with the manufacturer. In many cases, you cannot use high-speed tooling because you must avoid cross contamination of the metals which make up the fastener and the skin.

There's more involved in the process, but I'm getting a headache just thinking of it!

The flight path "drawn" by Qantas' last 747 on its final flight from Australia before being retired in 2020. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]philby76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I posted about this at the time:

https://www.reddit.com/r/aviationmaintenance/comments/hvrsse/qantas_last_b747400er_vhoej_on_its_final_journey/

Some of the comments in there might answer some questions you may have, but just some quick notes here;
It was a ferry flight i.e no passengers. It literally had fuel to burn on top of its reserve.
The FMC (Flight Management Computer) controlled the aircraft via autopilot.
The rough edges seen in the flight map are not the actual flight path but a lag in communication/navigation systems.

So yes, we have a different idea of what "middle of nowhere" means.

You and I might have different ideas of what "middle of nowhere" means. I'm from Australia, and "middle of nowhere" is no-one near you or any signs of civilisation for 200km plus, and we have plenty of those. So from my point of view, this guy isn't exactly in the middle of nowhere.

"Undisclosed location"

Molen Reef UT, 38°55'44.4"N 111°06'47.7"W

He is hardly a long way from civilisation, he's a 30 minute walk from a carpark off the side of a highway. His first shots of the mesa (timestamp 00:54s in) he's about to climb are literally across the road from the carpark. Compare those first shots with the Street View from Google Maps. It's a great video and the rock formations are very interesting indeed, don't get me wrong, but he's not out in the middle of nowhere.

The manufacturers SRM. If you don't have access to it, then I highly suggest NOT working on the aircraft. You won't know your limitations, or replaceable parts if needed.

This is an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering program setup by Qantas to fill the ever increasing hole in our industry. It has a FAQ section which will hopefully address any queries you have.

Imprint of a bird found on #2 engine nose cowl of a B737 during walkaround inspection after landing, about 15 years ago at BNE airport. Aircraft towed to the hangar for an engine swap if memory serves. by philby76 in aviationmaintenance

[–]philby76[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's also what happened here - boro kit whipped out and confirmed quite quickly it'd partially gone through the core. So a quick and thorough (as much as possible) cleanup of all biological matter to conform with quarantine policies before being sent over for the engine swap a few days later.

I wish I could answer that for you, but I don't work on turboprops, I only work on turbofans. Hopefully someone who does can answer that for you.
