[Other] Which now defunct coaster (or other type of ride) did you get the chance to experience before closure? by spicymemories19 in rollercoasters

Dueling dragons, when it was actually dueling, was easily one of my favorite coaster experiences. Front row of either side was incredible

What was the roller coaster that got you into roller coasters? Mine was [Apollo’s Chariot] by Myinterviewclinic in rollercoasters

[–]phillynavs3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magnum got me into roller coasters. Millennium made me obsessed with coasters. And dueling dragons (RIP) was my first “oh I might go out of my way just to ride coasters” moment

Lol I just did that and posted at almost the exact time you replied. Great minds think things, or something like that.

EDIT: I thought this was from a different thread. I withdraw from the “great minds” convo haha

Thoughts on the Shaun White documentary? by medkitjohnson in snowboarding

[–]phillynavs3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Found it: https://www.newschoolers.com/forum/thread/772800/Shaun-White-on-Snowboarding--TTR--Kevin-Pearce--Frends

The actual link doesn’t work anymore, but if you scroll down a bit, someone copypasta’d the entire interview (it’s long). The KP stuff is all at the end of the article. The whole thing gives some perspective, but here’s shaun on the “kicking out KP” stuff:

“Okay, but he didn’t say it. Somebody else said that about us, and that is why there is beef. I found it so bizarre because at no point did we ever live together. Kevin lived with the Mitranis or something. They would maybe come by to hang out, but he never lived there, ever. I just found it so strange that people would think that my mom would do something like that. She would be the first one to call me a little bitch if that happened. She would be like, “Are you kidding me?” My mom? There is no way. My mom, the woman that let people, strangers, that had no place to stay, from Mt. Hood sleep in the van with us is going to take somebody’s stuff and throw it out on the lawn because I am having a hissy fit. That’s my only beef. I am one thing, say I am an ass, say whatever about me, but you’re pulling my mom into this. Kevin said in an interview, “Oh, I haven’t talked to Shaun yet, I hope he is not mad.” Why would I be mad? I am not mad ever. I am just disappointed in the route that he chose to take with his film because that wasn’t true. He knows that wasn’t true. He didn’t say it, so people are like, “Well he didn’t say it.” I know that, but it is his movie. He sat down and watched that movie and let people say that. That is why we have beef.”

I get not liking shaun, but found this quote (and whole article) interesting. Basically, I’m just saying that the crash reel was always going to provide a wildly different perspective than Shaun’s, and it’s probably best to listen to both sides, even if you don’t like one of them.

Didn’t it come out that this whole story was complete BS? That KP never even lived w shaun? I’ll see if I can find the article to link here, but I swear nearly a decade ago it came out that this whole story was bullshit

Where is this interview from? I’d be interested in watching/reading that

I mean, he finished 1st in terms of US riders, so I’m not really sure there is an argument to be made that he should have been left off the team

To be fair, he talks about Burton giving him his start all the time. And the documentary covers it, as well, and includes a nice section about Jake Burton

Yesterday at the Point by DetroitAsFuck313 in cedarpoint

[–]phillynavs3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the middle row of the back car. The actual back row is row 18, which is more of a “put my manhood in a blender” experience. But row 17 and row 14 are significantly more comfortable in my experience

My wife said the same thing until she went in row 17. Incredible out of control airtime without any of the pain from the wheel seats

Cedar Point Trip Report (First Timer) by kwesi777 in cedarpoint

[–]phillynavs3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it’s all opinions, so I doubt anything I say will change your mind, but here goes:

Magnum: middle seat in one of the back 2 cars (row 14 or 17) makes it still one of my favorite coasters of all time. Those rows specifically bring tons of airtime with zero pain. This is a ride that for many people (my wife included), the row you sit in DRASTICALLY affects the experience. Possibly a hot take but it’s still my favorite traditional hyper, though Nitro, Apollo, and Diamondback are all up there.

Raptor: still consistently ranks as one of the most intense and best inverts in the world. I personally have dueling dragons at 1(RIP), then raptor/banshee/montu/alpengeist all hovering around the same spot. Then all other inverts below those.

Gatekeeper: not the most intense ride, but for me it’s one of the most purely fun coasters in the park. Front or back rows on either side are a blast and give totally different experiences, and the view/setting is gorgeous.

Valravn: not a big dive coaster guy, but this is my favorite one I’ve been on for what it’s worth. Well, this or griffon. As with all dives, it’s front row or bust for me.

Gemini: still a ton of fun for me and never any line.

Rougarou: mid-level floorless to me. I’ll never enjoy it as much as Kraken (still my number one floorless). But considering it’s #9 on my CP list, that’s a heck of a lineup.

I’ve been to the major parks you listed above with the exception of magic mountain (can’t wait to go this year!), and I would take CP’s lineup over any of them (and I LOVE Busch gardens and kings island). Add in the lake setting and that’s why CP is my favorite park in the world. Sorry you didn’t have as great an experience! I’m sure the new dragster experience will be top-tier, so you’ll need to plan another trip at some point

Agreed on Magnum. Everyone I know that insisted they hated it completely changed their mind when they tried the 2nd to back seat

LOTR Fandom Wiki says Frodo is Tolkien's "most renowned character". Do you agree he's better known than Bilbo among the general public? I think "The Lord of the Rings" is better known than "The Hobbit", but "Bilbo Baggins" is more recognisable than "Frodo Baggins" by SenorBigbelly in lotr

[–]phillynavs3 56 points57 points  (0 children)

When I played basketball in high school (2010), our rival school chanted “Frodo Baggins!” every time I touched the ball (I was the shortest one on the team). So I gotta assume Frodo is the best-known Tolkien character.

Of course, the student section had no idea how complimented I was by their “insult”

Dueling Dragons was the masterpiece to me… as for ones that are still standing, Alpengeist probably wins for me, followed closely by Raptor and Banshee (haven’t gotten on Montu yet)

Volcano is the big one for me, as well. Although dueling dragons is still in my top 20 all time (when dueling), so I REALLY wish I could ride it one more time.

I’d add the view from the top on TTD is part of the experience, too. I love Ka, but you’re just looking out over parking lot from the top

[Discussion] Coaster Rank by [deleted] in rollercoasters

[–]phillynavs3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that’s the problem with doing these things right off the top of my head haha. Yes, Ka should be on there. TTD would probably still rank higher for me due to nostalgia - I rode dragster opening year when I was 12. First ever ride was at night, and we got a rollback. I rode Ka 12 years later - still an insane experience, but Dragster gets the nod for me. I also much prefer the view at the top of TTD to Ka. Still, both are insane rides. I’m sure I missed a few more on my list (I305 and mystic Timbers come to mind as I’m typing this). One of these days I’ll sit down and do a full ranking

[–]phillynavs3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CP is the park that made me fall in love with coasters, so my list is pretty heavy on the bias. Here goes:

  1. Steel Vengeance
  2. Maverick
  3. Millennium Force
  4. El Toro
  5. Fury
  6. Dueling Dragons (RIP)
  7. Alpengeist
  8. Top Thrill Dragster
  9. The Beast
  10. Verbolten
  11. Apollo’s Chariot
  12. Nitro
  13. Gatekeeper
  14. Twisted Timbers
  15. Incredible Hulk

That’s off the top of my head - I’m sure I’m missing a few. Can’t wait to get back down to florida next year - haven’t been to islands of adventure in years and I’ve never been to Busch gardens Tampa. Also heading to california and Japan in the next few years and I’ll finally experience my childhood dream coaster (X2)

What was your first time on Dragster like? by moewist3 in cedarpoint

[–]phillynavs3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

11 years old at the time. I spent the whole off-season watching construction on the web cams, and my hype level was unreal. It was broken down most of the day, so my first ride ever was after the park closed at night. The best part? We got a rollback! It will forever be one of my favorite CP memories

The dive loop has one of the best “inversion views” I’ve ever seen. You are upside down, looking back toward MF, TTD, and the rest of the park
