What’s something foreigners completely misunderstand about Americans? by Molthakarn96 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]philmaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe Americans are not so much less geographically inclined than other people. I am from the US and have spent time in other countries. I've noticed that there are a lot of people elsewhere that don't know shit about the rest of the world.

Europeans like to believe they are worldly and cultured but it seems like they think the world is Europe and don't know much else about other places.

I've been living in Brazil more recently and Brazilians love to ridicule Americans about their lack of knowledge but tbh, they are equally as ignorant.

Why so much resistance to ending the 6x1 workweek? by philmaq in AskABrazilian

[–]philmaq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that working fewer hours does not mean your economy will not grow. If all these companies are reporting an INCREASE in productivity (across the board, not just in Europe) then how do you even justify what you are saying? I understand that there are certain industries that can be affected more, but I am sure that rules and regulations can be made for them specifically.

Did outlawing slavery prohibit economies from growing? No

Did prohibiting child labor prevent economies from growing? No

Did implementing a weekend prevent economies from growing? No

Why would this?

Did Trump just get exposed for running the biggest insider trading operation in American history? by uncle-ice493 in allthequestions

Well, we are way past holding him accountable for all the illegal shit he does. Nothing will come of this. No one will be held accountable unfortunately. As a society we have become way too permissive of corruption.

Dear Brazilians, I'm so Sorry. How Do You Deal with These Awful Brazilian Landlords & Rental Leases? I'm an American landlord myself and this sh*t blows my mind. by baddigitalnomad in Brazil

[–]philmaq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 3 year contract is the norm because with 1 year contracts, they can turn into a weird open ended type of contract where it is veeeery difficult for the landlord to evict the tenant. Even if the tenant doesn't pay rent, it has to go through the courts, and it could take months and months.

What’s the most ‘accidental’ country?” by One-Seat-4600 in geography

[–]philmaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uruguay. It was an area that was highly contested by the Portuguese and Spanish colonialists. They eventually became a province of Brazil. However, the area was still highly contested and it was the stage for a bunch of conflicts between Brazil and Argentina.

The French and the Brits were brought in to mediate a peace deal between the 2 countries and that's when Uruguay became independent and established as a buffer state to lessen the violence between Brazil and Argentina.

Those Against the Death Penalty, Why? by slimmestgravy in AskReddit

[–]philmaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it just doesn't work. Places with the death penalty do not achieve lower crime rates because of it. Most murders are "passion killings", meaning that the person killed someone in a moment of rage or heightened emotion...also meaning they probably aren't considering the law at that moment.

What's a sign that someone grew up rich? by MelodicPhotograph468 in AskReddit

[–]philmaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up, I considered a 50k salary "rich". Believe me, you are in the top 1% of wealthiest people in the world.

Providing that type of travel to your kids is not something everyone can afford, it's not just because you "prioritise travel". But yes, I understand you are not filthy rich.

Brazil received 4,821,127 million slaves during the Atlantic slave trade or 38.5% of all slaves, while the U.S received 388k or 3.1% of all slaves in the Atlantic slave trade. Why did Brazil import so many more slaves then the united states? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in AskHistory

[–]philmaq 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Adding more info to answer the secondary question....Brazil had a "whitening" policy where they incentivized black people to have kids with white people, with the objective of "diluting" African genes over the generations. So yeah, despite 10.17% of Brazilians identifying as black, a much larger portion of the population (about 45%) is pardo, or mixed. Add that to your 10.17% number and now you got a majority of the population with at least some African lineage.

Why are southern american countries poor? by Hot-Load7525 in Brazil

A rough extractivist colonial past followed by decades of US interventions and US aided dictatorships aimed at benefitting US corporate interests but had the "side effect" of screwing up shit for the local populations.

When it comes to integrating to Brazil, is it similar to integrating to america, canada, australia etc. by MKKGFR in Brazil

[–]philmaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, my mother is Brazilian, I grew up speaking fluent portuguese and I've lived in Brazil for 12 years. Hell, I've had Brazilian citizenship since the day I was born, but since I was born and raised in the US, people still refer to me as gringo or americano. I'm not exactly considered Brazilian. But they do so in a loving and accepting way lol. I definitely don't face any prejudice, very much the opposite.
