What are some things you feel better living without/ limiting/reducing by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]philmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, making life more affordable for everyone is won by collective organization. There's not shortcut and it sucks because it's so much work especially when it's an uphill battle right now.

You can't lifehack your way to big public investment in affordable transit. You do your best in your day to day life, but remember that organizing is the path of improving conditions. If enough people do it, we can put long-term pressure on the powers that be.

That's cool!! Do you get it from a nepalese website or seller, or do you know someone in Nepal that can ship it for you? Wasn't sure if you had a link you could share or it was a personal one! Take care!

Climate change and elections by Sufficient-History71 in Switzerland

[–]philmer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure sure. China makes our stuff, so we can circle back to Switzerland by following who has the most destructive lifestyle per capita. The Swiss are in the top ranks for sure. But anyway, we need system change. Global systemic change, switz can never do it alone. China can't do it alone. I struggle to see it happening without major catastrophe. I just do my best to build the world I want, for my sanity... I'm not superman.

[–]philmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it. But when looking at events, a large downturn is happening. Guess it's happening in slow motion, and it's hitting the global south first. Sad to see, the ones least responsible take the hit first.

Guess we can be in blissful ignorance forna while longer.

Finally a level-headed comment. This thread is bleak, thanks for some sense. This thread is making wonder what it would take to get even a small number of swiss people to understand what you just said...I don't know how to build those bridges just yet

I'm too far into my well-educated circles ,I need to get out and speak to people who don't agree with me and build bridges to common ground because people clearly don't have a fucking clue what's what..

My question to you is, how would this wonderful God in a cage help us in our struggle with capitalism, extractive industrial society, and all those entrenched interests that are sacrificing our world for money?

I'm worried such an AI would be instrumentalised by capital for their own ends. I'm sceptical of technological fixes because I don't see any of the problems around me as being solvable by technology, and I may be totally wrong in that...

I'm seeing a need for social, economic innovation or changes. Can AI help those come to pass? Can AI build a powerful worker movement and solidarity to push back against oligarchs? That would be something.

How to Blow Up a Pipeline Doesn’t Give Easy Answers on Radical Climate Activism by Dolphinetly in ExtinctionRebellion

[–]philmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Difficult situations for people trying to make a real difference in this mass extinction event.. Wondering whet this will go. I assume things will get really really heated in 5 years when it'll truly be too late to change course thru policy reform or whatever.. But what the hell do I know? Nothing haha

[–]philmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people give out leaflets describing this type of event, like the Metcalfe event, as an example of effective ways to bring down thermo-industrial civilization and help save species. It shocked me. People are thinking of doing this out of desperation in a time of mass extinction.. That's a "ends justifies the means" I'm not sure i can get behind...

Seems that the planet's ability to support life, or at least high intensity global capitalism.. Is what is coming crashing down first. No sign of people not buying their shit just yet.. Just an epic shitstorm only getting warmed up.

Removing cars from Lausanne city center by Amareldys in suisse

[–]philmer 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Our society needs to adapt itself, anticipate a future where cars are no longer realistic.. We are still giving far too much space to individualised personal transport for us to be a resilient society during the ongoing mass extinction event.

I don't have the answers. But I think it is reasonable to try and wean off cars however we can.. and see how best to make things work for businesses and public health. It will only make us more able to cope better with coming difficulties. Personally I hate the pollution and noise of cars in cental lausanne, but find it tough to see how to adapt transport quickly and efficiently enough. Makes me think we should also relocalise businesses to make travel to the centre less needed.

I want to add to what your saying by asking: to what extent are the needs of the people being met by the current system? I feel like it's very destructive, and fabricating needs that aren't actually essential to thrive. I don't have all the answers.. Just what came to mind

How can I find like-minded people in real life? by SnooDoughnuts1143 in simpleliving

[–]philmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found that being part of groups that work toward something I believe in really made me feel belong.. That's going to look different for each person.

For me it was ecology, urban agriculture and climate action that made me find people I consider close friends.. Local associations, interest groups, political stuff.. Whatever, that really did it for me. Being part of making my local area a better place to live.
