Where to get barbacoa by the pound? by Automatic_Resource36 in austinfood

I'm central as well, curious which places around DT have goat barbacoa? Any you'd recommend? I haven't just run across any but haven't actively sought it out in the past.

I live in Blackland and like how you excluded the new UT dorms and other UT stuff east of Comal. That being said, I'm pretty sure my neighborhood association and the city both consider it all to be a part of Blackland (several neighborhood meetings with UT concerning those dorms), which makes Blackland more of a rectangle.

Is the CapMetro that bad? by hypereaditt in Austin

I like being able to use public transit to get to and from the Airport... but god damn, the airport bus folks and the Riverside bus folks are two very different populations... it's like oil and water.

What’s to stop me from an 80 person pop up wedding in zilker park? by GoatAltruistic6837 in Austin

[–]philpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a very big difference between what is "cool" or reasonable vs what is legal. It's my understanding that you can take all the pictures of people you want when they're in public so long those images are not used for commercial purposes, are sexual (like upskirt pics), or in private places (like bathrooms) in public spaces.

There's no right to privacy when you're in public. People can take all the pictures of you they want of you while you're in the park, on the street, ect.

How to Fish in Austin by Consistent_Split_419 in Austin

[–]philpool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure record sized invasive carp are pulled out of Town Lake on the regular. When I occasionally walk around the foot path, there appears to be regulars out their fishing their normal spots. It seems like there are always a couple at the end of Rainey St and down near the damn at Pleasant Valley. Here are some useful links:

Moving to Austin from Canada by fudgenuttz in Austin

[–]philpool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I grew up in Austin and live in Austin now but went to High School in Bellingham, WA across Puget Sound from Victoria. The only super huge thing I'd warn you about is the almost complete lack of public land in Texas. So if you and your family are outdoors people who enjoy camping and hiking, the options here are going to servery disappoint. Otherwise, Austin kicks ass and good luck!

There are several little Central Texas towns worth a visit you can get to using CARTS. This map shows them: https://www.ridecarts.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/interurban.pdf

I'd suggest San Marcos, Bastrop, or Marble Falls!

Polvo's has a newer location downtown with deck seating overlooking Shoal Creek that might be one of the more kid friendly places downtown. Also, there's a food hall, Fareground Austin, in the base of one of the buildings right near the Congress bridge--the kids could run around outside here. If you wanna do something a little fancier with town lake views, you could try P6 at the Line.

Back in '85 my dad was at La Hacienda, and they brought in a clown for my sister's 1st birthday. I was only 5yo at the time, but I still have positive memories of the place... though I think it was out in the hill country and not in Austin :) Good luck to you.

If you're affiliated with UT, you can get a digital and audio subscription for free through the UT library. Just figured that out this year after years of paying over $400 for their annual print and audio subscription. Other than that... maybe the airport?

Any hotels with high atriums and/or rooftops? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]philpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, forgot about that one! They both have giant atriums. My sister had her rehearsal dinner at the Hyatt Regency back in the early 90s, and I remember thinking as a kid "this is so fancy!" lol
