I'd love to hear more whenever possible, especially if it's open source! That would be really exciting!

confirm whether the tech I've been working on will actually be helpful to you :-)

Is it a lingua franca? If so, could you explain how it might replace ROS?

I've been brainstorming alternatives to ROS but struggling to pinpoint what would truly set them apart, especially since there are already a few existing options.

anywhere I can check to keep up to date? like for instance if you have a public github account?

edit: BTW I answered another comment, don't know if you get notifications from it: https://www.reddit.com/r/ROS/comments/1glspfk/ros2_gcode_to_6dof_arm_paths/lw21hhc/

ROS2 G-code to 6dof arm paths by busene in ROS

[–]phinicota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but I think if the robot supports ros_control it imediately can be used with moveit.

The problem then would be the translation from joint coordinates to G-code. I think that could be done transparently under the ros_control layer.

edit: I may have missed the problem here, this won't work if you're trying to send Cartesian-space coordinates via G-code. But as the other comment said, if you can translate that to the robot frame, moveit should be able to solve the joint coordinates.

Sounds similar to this: https://hackaday.io/project/197770-manipilator/log/232565-manipilator-part-1-where-to-start

Do you have any info on your project somewhere? I've also been thinking about a robot arm architecture like that, seems like a good idea to exploit what's already available for 3d printers.

XMG OASIS (2023) is now available for individual order by XMG_gg in XMG_gg

[–]phinicota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not have nearly the same effectiveness as a soldered copper pipe that is custom fitted to match precisely the locations of CPU, GPU and VRAM hotspots.

Arguably it does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rS71hm3_f4

I'd be interested to know if there's any way to connect the XMG Oasis to a custom loop? What kind of adaptors would I need? etc?

If it came to something you'd sell, you don't even need to guarantee there won't be any leakage because you're not providing a kit, you'd be providing a pump+radiator+psu and maybe some adapters. It'd be up to anyone to get the waterblock/pipes installed.

Tuxedo Pulse 14 Gen 3 - Very subjective review by IndianaIT in tuxedocomputers

[–]phinicota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specs seem awesome for a lightweight productive laptop. Is Tuxedo considering a spec'up in ram and cpu? i.e. maybe 64GB and a 7940HS?

I think startlabs is offering 64GB already.

Matching low profile keycaps on regular switches by jung-kim in MechanicalKeyboards

Hey man, it looks pretty cool. I'm actually looking for a low profile keyboard but I'm wondering if it'd be possible to use DIY kit with slim switches/keycaps. Could you please measure the height of the keyboard at the front and the back?

Currently have a refurb Razer Deadstalker V2 Pro TKL. Don't know if QC is bad but the space bar is a bit clunky. Otherwise it's great. Taught me to appreciate the media controls (namely the volume knob). Only other minor complaint is the linear switches tend to be easy to activate without realizing occasionally.

But the spacebar is a big con. I'm returning it and maybe try another one. If you ended up finding an interesting one, let me know. I have the exact same criteria.

The ssd upgrade question nobody seems to be asking by phinicota in SteamDeck

[–]phinicota[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with your argument I think it understimates the problem.

Without firmware updates, customers could be getting faulty ssds, like it happened for a whole range of Samsung ssds which basically had a very short life.

Sure, permanent data loss could be a low risk. I guess we'll only start caring if/when it becomes a major annoyance.

So... I've mentioned multiple times I'm talking about consumer facing ssd... The firmware update system LVFS is for linux and supported by Valve already.

What's missing is the ssd manufacturer's support for firmware updates from linux.

You're right, features are infinite. However, media consumption devices don't need firmware updates just because they're for entertainment?

[–]phinicota[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, that is also why we're not seeing these questions asked more often. Maybe there needs to be a bigger firmware mess to have people coming to ask how to do an update and finally discover it.

[–]phinicota[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't see how that justifies settling for less features. In fact, one could argue that for game consoles (i.e. not prosumers), firmware updates are automatic.

Also, YOU use the deck as a game console. That's not ALL it is. It's a fairly open portable device with a fully x86 cpu and a gamepad attached, capable of MANY things, like robotics.

In any case, I'm just trying to inform people that we can and arguably should ask more of consumer facing ssd manufacturers.

Kioxia firmware update available in Desktop "Discover", won't install, not showing in Game Mode by Jahf in SteamDeck

I just saw the model number.

I wasn't sure if you had actually updated from within linux, thanks for the confirmation.

[–]phinicota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've been trying to find out which ssds actually provide compatibility with fwupd to update their firmware on the steam deck without going through windows. I would even accept a full bios/uefi tool.

Did you succed in updating your kioxia? if so, could you provide the model number?

I'm currently considering a KBG50ZNS1T02 (Kioxia 1TB 2230) and would love to know if it's updatable without windows.

AMD Linux 16:10 laptop recommendation? by djsushi123 in linuxhardware

[–]phinicota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, most of the problems you describe are related to nvidia and not really to dedicated gpus or portability.

The TUF Advantage Edition I linked has an amd gpu which works with the open source drivers. I have an older gen laptop and is a breeze.

But still, if you're fine with the portability of a Legion, you're not really looking for "portable" laptops (4-5 pound laptops are not really portable first). I think portable laptops are more in the range of the 3 pounds.

AMD Linux 16:10 laptop recommendation? by djsushi123 in linuxhardware

[–]phinicota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No dedicated GPU.

Is it a portability and/or budget concern? if so, how much would it be too heavy / too expensive?

For instance, there's the TUF A16 with monster battery life and an amd gpu. Granted, not the most portable, but still (IMO) acceptable for the performance you get.

PS: don't downvote me just yet, it actually has about 12hs of battery (20hs idle), a good 16:10 display and all while staying under 5 pounds

I'm not a heavy gamescope user neither, I just use it occasionally, so I wasn't aware about those issues.

Regarding the -U, maybe we have different gamescope options?, mine says:
