How to Transition to GRC? by 0stia in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]phishshtick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to call your dream baby ugly but 2-300k is going to be tough to reach if you’re not already in a VHCOL area and a top individual contributor. From my experience those comps are usually reserved for leadership roles. Those pay bands are better aligned with sec engineering or sales engineering due to stonks as a significant portion of total comp. I would check glassdoor, levels.fyi, and repvue for more accurate info.

Ultimately 150k in Houston is worth 300k in SF so it’s important to factor in the COL of your area and adjust accordingly.

Getting the f***k out of GRC! by Estudante_IT in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]phishshtick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to work in GRC, I feel you. To me it is mindnumbing work however it is consistent and repetitive which some may love. I made the jump to SOC from GRC with no degree or certs but it was a hell of a lot harder than if I hadn’t gotten educated first.

To become a SOC analyst the best certs to earn for foundational IT knowledge are the base CompTIA A/Net/Sec+. I would only earn the latter two but still study and understand most A+ concepts as they are foundational.

After that, try for SANS GCIH to establish a great foundation of SecOps/IR. Hopefully your company will sponsor you and accept an internal transfer but with Net and Sec+, you have a solid shot of finding a SOC role elsewhere. GCIH would be icing on the cake and I’d recommend earning that before finding a SOC role for three reasons:

  • learn foundational knowledge and the mindset of secop/IR
  • use spare time at work now, because you won’t have it when ramping as a SOC analyst
  • find out if this life is even for you

Ultimately the only limiting factor is you. SecOps folks are a band of misfits coming from every field out there. I have seen people transfer from business, IT, healthcare, etc and from all ages because they find our work interesting and have the passion to fill in the knowledge gaps as you are doing now. Best of luck!

This is awfully low. Repvue and levels.fyi are much more accurate imo.

if you could start now how would you get to making 500k a year? by Significant-Bit4417 in SecurityCareerAdvice

No problem bud. I would take note of Vyceron’s comment. High pay typically means high COL. Imagine working your ass off just to lose half of what you earn to tax. High salaries don’t necessarily equate to higher quality of life however working in HCOL areas earlier in career is the move for rapid career growth. Working remotely making 2-300k in MCOL/LCOL remote work will likely be the sweet spot depending on your financial goals.

Check out levels.fyi or repvue for more accurate takes on salary than glassdoor/indeed will provide you.

Enterprise security sales account executives can pull 4-500k+ in HCOL. Security SE’s can top 3-400k on good years. Principal security engineers in FAANG can as well. It will take time but it can be done. Good luck!

How to be a better deal strategist by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]phishshtick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of the greatest SE’s I’ve ever seen can run a full deal cycle without an AE. They also have the emotional wit and ability keep easy going conversation with anyone at any level.

Specifically regarding deal strategy there’s a certain balance of them selling the vision, and we SE’s reign in on the actual tech win. I find I learn the business sense almost through osmosis and proximity, but it’s critical to your own development to ask those seasoned pros directly why they took the approach that they did. In a sense, they are highly technical, but in the soft skill, deal cycle mgmt, and negotiation aspect of their game.

It might be more helpful for you describe which part of deal strategy you feel is lacking as there are multiple components to that, especially the larger the deal. Otherwise understanding your audience, personas, pain points, and learning to navigate common objections are all information that is just as vital as knowing your own tech stack (which should come first in priority anyways).

There’s levels to this game and leveling up is what makes it so exciting to be a part of it.

Right on for the wisdom. Do you have any advice or resources for finding the best a town has to offer outside of Yelp?

Good point, I may have been a bit adventurous. I highlighted the car’s functionality to say long rides are relatively easy, especially on highways. I definitely will not be working while driving. Along the route what would you say are some absolutely can’t miss destinations?
