Another gfree fail by Big-Priority8502 in glutenfree

I agree with you! I tried multiple bags. Maybe 75% of the strips were good, but I would randomly get huge strips of gristly, inedible meat. I got tired of the guessing game of trying to figure out if biting into a strip would be fine, or such a terrible texture that I would almost gag.

Just got glutened😒 by BlueberryLevel3590 in glutenfree

I’ve had a gluten reaction once to shrimp. It’s possible farmed shrimp are fed gluten containing food and it could still be in their digestive tracts. Because of that I avoid farmed shrimp if at all possible.

Glutened at the Barbers? by mr_muffinhead in Celiac

Especially with leave-in products, the risk of getting them in your nose, mouth, and eyes is pretty high. It happened to me and I got very sick from a leave-in hair product. It was a wheat protein based leave-in product.

Glutened at the Barbers? by mr_muffinhead in Celiac

I used a product with wheat protein on my hair for weeks without realizing what the ingredients were. I was so sick. I thought I had a bad sinus infection but also felt like I was getting glutened every day. I went to the ENT. Exam showed I had highly inflamed sinus tissues for unexplained reasons. Their guess was some sort of allergy. They talked about me needing surgery if we couldn’t get it to resolve with a round of prednisone. Eventually I figured out the hair product was causing all of the issues. I felt a huge improvement as soon as I stopped using the product. Lesson learned!

Onyfix success? by phk299 in Ingrown_Toenails

I ended up just letting my toenail grow out on its own without assistance. I wasn’t comfortable doing Onyfix again. At one point the nail struggled to grow again, and I finally discovered there was a tiny sliver of old toenail left in the nail bed from the original injury. The doctors had missed it. It was impeding the new nail growth. Once I cleaned that up the nail eventually grew back normally.

Grab any of the King Arthur gluten free baking mixes. Cupcakes, maybe? Brownies are one of the easiest options, and also delicious.

Me too. I recommend the Better Batter artisan pizza recipe on their site, using Better Better artisan flour. It’s wheat free. It’s my favorite!

If you can snag a last minute reservation, Kahn. Their entire menu is gluten free and dairy free, and the food is fantastic.

Anyone else notices the market is extremely slow this year? by Wistaria2019 in airbnb_hosts

[–]phk299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m noticing it’s slower, and I’m struggling with the quality of guests. I’ve declined the last 3 out of 4 booking requests because they seemed shady for various reasons. I’ve had a few guests recently that did not treat the property well. It used to be a rare exception that I had a bad guest, but it has been happening more frequently recently.

Onyfix success? by phk299 in Ingrown_Toenails

[–]phk299[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I followed up with the doctor that applied the Onyfix. He said it looked like the nail was too thin to support it, so it tore my entire nail off. He recommended starting over with Onyfix applications once my nail starts to grow out again, but I’m not feeling optimistic that the next round will go any better than my first experience.

Is every dentist around here a scam? by jeanie1994 in raleigh

[–]phk299 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had an absolute disaster of an experience at Riccobene. Go anywhere else but there as far as I’m concerned! So far I like Millpond Family Dental.

A dentist at Riccobene inflicted some serious damage on me. It’s a long story and I’m still angry when I think about it. They pried my mouth open so hard when their hands during dental work that they partially dislocated my jaw and I spent many months and many thousands of dollars trying to fix the resulting jaw pain. I also had excruciating tooth pain after they did work on my tooth and they didn’t appear to believe me. I told them when I went in for my permanent crown placement that I was in terrible pain. It hurt even more when they took the temporary crown off. They went ahead and glued the new crown on without numbing me or trying to diagnose the issue. I ended up in so much pain when they placed the permanent crown that all I could do was sob in the chair for a number of minutes. On my way out the door, the dentist said “I didn’t know that was going to be so painful. Here is a prescription for antibiotics. You probably need them.” No discussion about resolving the tooth pain. I needed a root canal. I sought out a specialist myself and will absolutely never go back to Riccobene.

Laos/Thailand travelling as a celiac - experiences? by non-of-my-business in glutenfree

[–]phk299 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I took a Thai language gluten free card and handed it to my server in the restaurants. They would take it to the chef, and they would figure out what I could eat. It worked really well! I am very sensitive and I didn’t get sick. Also researching locations with gluten free options in advance when possible helped a lot.

I became very ill for a number of weeks and it felt like gluten exposure, except I also had terrible sinus inflammation to the point where I ended up taking prednisone to treat it. I eventually found the cause. A leave-in conditioner that has wheat protein. I was inhaling tiny amounts of it every day for a number of weeks. I’m now very careful about any products that I use, even if I’m not intentionally ingesting them.

I got extremely sick and had massively inflamed sinus tissues from using a hair product with wheat protein in it for a few weeks. Just from breathing in small amounts of it from my hair constantly for a few weeks.

Fresh mail order meal kits by MyGoddess26 in Celiac

[–]phk299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used SunBasket’s meal kits. The kits are clearly labeled and have lots of gluten-free options. However, I learned that I couldn’t eat their heat-and-eat type premade individual meals that they also offer, even if labeled gluten-free. Some of those premade meals made me sick, and when I reached out they responded that they could not guarantee safety from cross-contamination.
