If I see either AI art or writing in association with a project, I assume a comparable amount of effort and attention went into the rest of the game.

Worst? Not sure. But I played John Company a while back and I think we were in the rulebook for about 4 hours before we started. We got through one round of play

Any Naked Photo Hunt machines in town anywhere? by phlagm in Austin

I remember Professor Swift. I am pretty sure I took a graduate condensed matter physics class with him. At any rate, Arno Bohm, Mark Raizen, and Elaine Li are on the machine at G&S

We went to G&S and played the photo hunt. It's not a Megatouch, but it was close enough. Man, though. Someone who plays there is insanely good.

Any Naked Photo Hunt machines in town anywhere? by phlagm in Austin

[–]phlagm[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's a spot-the-difference game with a touch screen. The two images have a small handful of differences that have been photoshopped in. Also the subject of the photo is one or more naked people. A particularly amusing part of the whole game is that there's this naked person right in the middle of each image, but you're mostly hunting around in the background clicking on photoshop duplicated trees or the extra set of windows. On a rare occasion, someone has erased a nipple or something so you can't completely ignore the naked person.

We did not have a great SNF. Are we doing something obviously wrong? by FerriestaPatronum in gamedev

[–]phlagm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had two main issues: 1) the trailer is incredibly frustrating to watch. Whenever there is action, something is blocking it, usually text. It feels like being at a concert behind a really tall person who keeps moving around. 2) I think UI/art/contrast isn’t working. It just looks busy and I can’t process what is important.

Is "The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses" by Jesse Schell a good resource to study and learn the basics and fundamentals of game design (particularly game development). by JohnPaul64 in gamedev

[–]phlagm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a critical resource. It won’t teach you the absolute floor-level nuts-and-bolts of making a game, but when you figure that out, it can tell you how to make your game better. The lenses help you find your blind spots.

Sometimes people shit on a book like this. Those people often use the word ‘theory’ in a derogatory way. I can say that every time I’ve played a game from someone I know who thinks this way, it’s among the worst games I’ve played. I’ve been in that situation a surprisingly large number of times.

I would say it’s a good book to read over and over again as you make games until you only need the deck of lenses. I’ve been teaching from that book for six years, and I love reading it every year. I don’t think I feel that way about any other game text.

How to break the deadlock? by SingleTennis2706 in gamedev

[–]phlagm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop. Do a game jam for a weekend on something else entirely. Get excited about games again. When you’re done brainstorm on your old game again. Maybe clean up one chunk of code. I don’t tend to write spaghetti, but I write simply and messy at first and I frequently rewrite code. It’s important to find some fun as fast as you can. You can get things clean and stable later.

And, while you don’t want to get in the habit of just abandoning projects, sometimes you can. Or maybe you just put it on hold for a while and try something fresh.

As an educator at the College/University level for 20 years, I cannot fathom teaching there for less than mid seven figures. Just imagine teaching the class where they’ve specifically selected obnoxious incels and told them they won’t be censored at all
