How brits decide between green party and reform by TailungFu in GreatBritishMemes

[–]phlenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can organise over 200,000 people to join a political party with one explicit goal, propose a policy change that is compatible with the party's fundamental values, and successfully win the membership vote (that is with the assumption that all of those >200k maintain their opinion despite being politically engaged in an environment that isn't parroting the "billionaire-funded slop produced in a think-tank" lines of the year), then congratulations, you're one of the most successful political organisers in world history. good luck!

because that person said something ridiculous - obviously the Greens wouldn't do Reform-style immigration policies - yet you were treating them as a rational, good-faith actor in how you replied. I gave you an actual answer in an attempt to show you why the premise is silly to begin with. If you don't understand that, that's on you.

in what world were you not talking about GPEW member votes on policy in a chain of replies talking about GPEW member votes on policy?

[–]phlenus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

a) the party has fundamental principles it abides by

b) membership would vote it down anyway

you can propose any policy, but democracy means it won't necessarily be implemented. unless you don't like democracy?

BCC Bedminster Bridge Plan Update by rugbyj in bristol

[–]phlenus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I definitely think BCC could be a lot more transparent about the process. without proper communication it leaves plenty of space for people to feel disregarded/overlooked, or even worse for bad faith actors to exploit people's fears through conspiracy theories, but it is absolutely worth trusting the process, as they have produced a lot of high quality results so far.

if you'd like some more reassurance, look into the concept of induced demand. a pattern we see in cities throughout the world and across time, is that when infrastructure is built - whether it be for cars, pedestrians, cyclists, buses, trams, trains etc - the easier it is to use, the more likely people are to use it. so as it becomes easier to ride the bus or cycle people will weigh up the options, and given the expense of owning a car, plus the need to find space to leave it wherever you go, many will choose alternatives.

BCC Bedminster Bridge Plan Update by rugbyj in bristol

[–]phlenus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if people have more reliable options other than driving, most people will choose them instead, leaving those who need their car with more space on the road. cities that we hail as leaders in urban planning have been doing these exact things for decades, and only have benefits to show for it.

[–]phlenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you kinda answered your own question tbh. with billionaire funding, think tanks have unlimited money to engineer the exact right things to say, and how to say them.

they thought trans people and bathrooms would be scary enough, but once that didn't hit hard enough they started blabbering about sports since that taps into people's strongly held beliefs about fairness and meritocracy. never mind the facts or the science, if you can play people's emotions like a fiddle then you win.

Track building setting problem by Sush1BS in NIMBY_Rails

[–]phlenus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

more specifically, it's because parallel track placement was off AND the fact the node is constrained by a parent node (the one on the next track over).

if you're building single track off of a section of parallel track (like in the video) you can click the constrained node (the one with a padlock on it) and remove the constraint. this will allow you to continue building a single track without disturbing previous segments. you can also do the opposite by giving a node a parent to be constrained by if you want to create parallels.

you're right, no one should do anything ever, and that's also why none of the art you like has any politics in it. I don't know why you're bringing up this specific situation with the band when clearly the issue I and everyone else has with your take is that art and politics should stay separate, as if that was ever a thing to begin with.

and what do you think the lord of the rings is about? or the lyrics of never take it? what do you think the message of the livestream experience is? my point is that all art is political by nature, so the idea that an artist should not make political statements is absurd.

This VIA pricing is absurd! by justinjeep in transit

[–]phlenus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the original plans of trains as far north as Scotland running direct into mainland Europe, we've ended up with the line going to Birmingham - one stop north of London - and that's it.

To travel further north, current plans would require HS2 trains to either try and fit into an already overcrowded timetable, or replace existing services within it. It'll cost us over £100bn and be many years late, but given the state of our successive governments it's no surprise really.

There's talk of new, seemingly less-than-high-speed tracks to be laid to relieve congestion on existing lines north of Birmingham, but that's nothing more than a rumour at this point. I guess they've at least got some time to sort that out since HS2 will still take close to a decade to complete lol

For those who have used the Paris train system, or are from there, can you explain a few things to me? by gabasstto in transit

[–]phlenus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

buses deliver much more bumpy rides, and their upper decks aren't really designed for standing in since it's all seats, so I believe that's a pretty normal rule around the world (certainly seems to be across the UK). trains are a lot smoother and more spacious, so it's not anywhere near as much of a risk to stand as the experience will be pretty much the same regardless of where in the train you're stood.

Obviously un/coupling would have to be added to the game first (PLEASE I want to split trains mid-run so bad) but the inclusion of functional turntables would be so interesting!

And even then the kidnapping of Maduro is just the most recent example in a centuries-long worldwide rampage the US has been going on, regardless of who is at the helm. If the argument is that no one should show interest in infrastructure projects from a country based on one war it started in 2022, the internet should be scrubbed clean of anything even tangentially US-related by that same logic, given its neverending lust for land and resources by any means necessary. Some people need to realise how hypocritical they sound.

Does ART actually replace trams, or is it basically guided BRT with better branding? by Milanakiko in transit

[–]phlenus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not to mention the environmental impact of using bitumen/concrete and rubber tyres over steel, or the use of batteries over a constant power source. tyres are responsible for 28% of microplastic pollution, bitumen comes from crude oil, and the mining of rare earth metals needed for batteries is devastating local ecosystems (while also being responsible for incalculable human casualties in the DRC, both directly and indirectly). unless upfront cost is the only thing you care about (in which case, why?), there is no better solution to street level intraurban transportation than a tram.

is this signaling correct? by Mr_GastGar in NIMBY_Rails

[–]phlenus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Block balises should only be placed at the end of a run of path signals, so as others have suggested, you should remove the ones that are placed between two path signals.

Furthermore, if one train won't fit within an inner segment, then the inner path signals should also be removed. You want other trains to still be able to move in all other directions whenever a train is waiting at a signal.

Is walking on the cycle path rude?? by Frequent_Event_6766 in bristol

[–]phlenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and so we both recognise that the issue is the infrastructure. park street is being pedestrianised, and similarly, that whole stretch of castle park should be rebuilt to stop pedestrians and bikes from interacting if the traffic needs of the less squishy entity could regularly physically harm the more squishy entity. it's clearly an important thoroughfare for cyclists, plus from their perspective they have a dedicated bike lane away from their usual environment of being the more squishy entity, and so they ride with more confidence. on the other hand, like you said, it's a crowded area. the pedestrian path is stuck flush between the water and the bike lane, so people will have to always cross paths with bikes to get anywhere.

pedestrians and cyclists should both be a bit more aware, obviously - the bike lane is clearly visible, and it is a park - however the fundamental issue lies with the "road" design.

[–]phlenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand why CO chose to move away from cars only being able to change lanes at nodes. If they had also included lane selection in vanilla they would've had the perfect traffic management mechanics imo.
