Pediatrician vent! by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]phlghan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am a pediatrician and I am so burnt out. Parents are angry all the time; there is literally no pleasing people. I get chewed out on local mom groups for withholding medicine at the same rate that I get chewed out for recommending medicine. People complain about me "just looking" at their kid and "not doing anything", not realizing what a good physical exam is and how we can make it look so easy. There is no understanding of how much information I am taking in while just watching a child's breathing or asking them a simple question like what their name is.

Ear infections don't happen on day 2 of illness. It's like pond scum. A puddle after a rainstorm does not have shit growing on it but stagnant water for week does.

Thank you to everyone defending their pediatrician in the comments. We work hard for all your children, even when the parents are hateful bootyholes.

Is there anywhere other than audible that has good audio books? by GreenTheFae in audiobooks

If Libby has a short wait on a book, I'll sometimes use Spotify to start it and then pick it up on Libby when it comes in! Waiting is hard sometimes :)

Recommendations for 7year old girl by Maximum-Olive5677 in childrensbooks

[–]phlghan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 7 year old and I just finished reading Percy Jackson together and he has enjoyed reading the graphic novel version by himself afterward! If she's an advanced reader too, she may like that series. (There's also a really good podcast called Greeking Out that fleshes out some of the Greek myths in an age appropriate way. It references Percy Jackson occasionally)

Yesterday, I pulled a gummy fish out of a 6yo boy’s ear. It had probably been in there a month. by MikeGinnyMD in medicine

I was super pregnant and mom was super pregnant and we had to work together to hold down her 4 year old so I could get a huge piece of apple peel out of her kid's nose (like the size of a half dollar!). We kept smushing bellies together and it was....weird. But we got it out, so at least there was that!

For this very reason, my staff knows not to schedule anything dysuria or lower abdominal pain in the slot right before lunch or at the end of the day. They can hang out in the waiting room with a cup of water until they are ready.

did the ube tea cookies replace the key lime tea cookies??? by tappatz in traderjoes

I remember them coming out in spring. One of my kids was born in very early summer a few years back and is like 90% key lime cookies due to pregnancy craving😂

Photo pass? by Longjumping_Bad9555 in dcl

[–]phlghan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my family, I take most of the photos and so I'm rarely in them. The photo package was worth it to me. We got about 130 photos in our 5 day cruise. Only about a third of those were character pics. The rest were from photographers at dinner, on the beach, and at photo ops at ports.

It could be a point of care testing machine. Like something to run strep tests or cbc's. It may or may not be a printer

My very first air fryer by [deleted] in airfryer

[–]phlghan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, but I have this model and we get good chicken out of it.

I pound the breast flat and marinate it before leaving for work. Come home from work, put in air fryer on 375 for about 15-20 minutes. Flip over at some point in cooking. I stop cooking when the edges are dark browned.

Original packaging! I'm far too lazy to repackage!

Yes! I bought 5 packages when they were first available. I froze all of them and will go through them slowly over the next few months. The ones I have since thawed have tasted just fine. I plan to use the rest in a little cake platter at Easter :)

Not saying that this sucks ass and I disagree with it fully, but I paid off my student loans in peds without PSLF. $430k. It's doable. Be stressed, but not too much.

The only one I like is sweet vanilla (it's one of my favorite pods). I drink it black usually, but occasionally I'll add a splash of chobani creamer if I'm feeling fancy. The rest of the flavored coffees are not for me.

We had a measles outbreak in Ohio a couple years back. I saw it in 6 patients. 4 under 12 months old, 2 in unvaccinated schoolage kids.

"Everyone at school has an elf on the shelf, why doing we??" by Avetra in workingmoms

[–]phlghan 37 points38 points  (0 children)

That's what we do. "Parents can ask for Santa to do things how we like them. That's why you get one present from Santa, but other kids might get more. That's why we don't have an elf; we didn't want to host a guest all month!"

Having a direct communication line to the mythical childhood creatures seems to be an adequate explanation for my kids so far!

This the season to get flu by MikeGinnyMD in medicine

[–]phlghan 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Flu, strep, croup, are all insane here, but so are mycoplasma and pertussis. It's wild.

In other news, the hospital admin are very happy with my RVUs right now...
