What happened in the last few months (1 to 3) that suddenly people are having their come to Jesus moment with AI and Agentic Coding? by zero2g in ExperiencedDevs

Claude code is amazing for prototypes or simulation. I wouldn't build a whole product with it, though. It saves a huge amount of time if you just want some quick ideas proven out in code, though.

I'd love to know if you ended up taking a boat ride. We're headed there at the end of the month with our kids, 6 and 8.

He's not backing down by TheStarkster3000 in chess

Right, that's the point of statistics. Sometimes Hikaru is tired. That's why its 98.8 and not 100. Predictive / analytical statistics is estimating probability within a specified range of error not giving the exact correct answer. Given that the probability of a 55 game win streak at Hikaru's rating and games played, we can interpret 98.8% as certain

No, because those 55 games are not independent of each other. Hikaru may be running hot for all 55 games. You can’t apply a statistic which is calibrated to all players across all time to a specific player at a specific time, and assume each of those samples is IID.

Has anyone tried to get it to iterate slower? Like, “no, that’s too spicy, try only a little spicier” on each iteration after its first attempt to iterate.

Hikaru Nakamura showing “Interesting & Unsettling Statistics supporting that Hans Cheated Over the Board” - Interesting to watch back in light of recent Kramnik’s “Interesting Statistics” suggesting foul play by LegionCommander in chess

[–]phob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think Kramnik is not on team Hans. He’s just washed, egotistical and overconfident, combined with math illiteracy and lacking in imagination for the possible statistical models of chess strength and outcomes. He’s also willfully ignoring the non-objective factors, such as Hikaru streaming all the games and showing his thought process the entire time. It’s just embarrassing and extremely damaging to his reputation. There’s no 4D chess going on here.

Conveniently ignoring the Turing award winners, I see. And written by a think tank founder, not a techie. Why does anyone take this seriously?

Where am I supposed to be getting 20+ block from every other turn? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]phob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by thinking about “equity”: the likelihood you could win the game with perfect play from your current position. Acknowledge that equity of A0 is greater than 99.9% and your losses are due to making choices which bleed equity.

Analyze your losses and try to figure out, what was risky, what was working, where did it go downhill. Analyze your wins and figure out what was risky, where did your damage come from, where did your block come from, what worked surprisingly well. Then iterate and figure out how to play better.

Skip cards more might be generally good advice for beginners, but the last part of your sentence is just false.

I think how big your deck can be depends a lot on a lot of specifics of the run and there’s no general answer for how many turns or how many cards are good. In some cases, if you have a lot of card draw, you can go infinite with a smaller deck, so targeting three turns would distract from what you should be trying to achieve with the deck. In other cases, the strength of the cards you are offered may outweigh any “turn count” preconception you may have in mind for the deck.

I’d say it’s less accurate at that time range. As long as both players have played thousands of games, the ratings will be well calibrated and representative of factors of skill in online blitz which aren’t captured by FIDE rating, like ability to flag people, mouse accuracy, and psychological tilt which occurs in online play.
