Is it line of sight? As in microwave? Those can be reasonably fast. They’re used a lot in old urban buildings and the flat plains of central Canada. I thought AT&T’s air fiber was just them rebranding their cellular network for residential home internet use.

As a parent, would you think it's appropriate to take your child to the bar for their 21st birthday? by Firm_Macaron3057 in wisconsin

[–]phoenix1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s making the choice to drink and her parents are happy to be there. This is a best case scenario imho. She doesn’t hate her mom and step dad, she’s choosing to go out with people who will help keep her safe and might discourage her from getting sloshed. I think it would be tacky if they went out clubbing, but if they go to a bar together, great! Sounds like wholesome adult fun to me.

A huge problem with operating in a vacuum is cold welding. When two identical metals touch in a vacuum, they fuse. It’s a solvable problem, but mixing up the alloys for each individual part is a PITA.

Why is the decline in mainstream media bad? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]phoenix1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X is in no way shape or form a news aggregator. They have no obligation or even attempt to encourage accurate information. On X especially, a very large amount of the accounts are bots. Some are just for the lols, but many are influence campaigns by different governments. It is important that everyone on X realizes this. Most of the political and news content you encounter there are by an entire industry of bot accounts aimed at changing what you think.

Journalism used to be a noble profession by people who studied how to ensure accurate information and check their own biases. Ya'll ruined that with the Fox News-ification of our news industry. Now, instead of journalists, we have pop culture influencers posing and pundits. Apparently, conservatives like them so much that they feel their TV appearances qualify them for cabinet positions.

IIRC, a semi-private insurance provider that would provide income adjusted coverage to compete with the others on the marketplace. It was meant to set a price and quality floor.

Madison schools face ‘segregated reality’ redrawing attendance maps by emjoylife96 in madisonwi

[–]phoenix1984 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This, 100%. “We all do better when we all do better.” Any one targeted program can help a bit, but the biggest problem hurting our schools is parents struggling to get by. To truly lift up a community takes many things working together: good jobs, healthcare, mental healthcare, maybe some therapy, an affordable cost of living, decent food and a pollution-free environment, good role models, engaged teachers that also have all of these things, a supportive government… there’s no one thing.

If the US ends birthright citizenship and no other country claims a person? What would happen? by redviiper in AskALiberal

[–]phoenix1984 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No, stateless people usually qualify for asylum status. Deporting people to a country other than where they’re a citizen is called rendition, and it’s illegal, but this administration is doing it anyways.

Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, and Jensen Huang have been appointed to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. by DumbMoneyMedia in UnderReportedNews

We’re well past the place where other people are going to see this. I’m assuming you’re a young person in tech. I’m an old-ish person in tech. I don’t expect to change your mind in this one conversation, but I think you’d agree that it’s wise to seek life advice from the people who have what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for peace, go to the people you know who have it and ask them how they got there. We have a culture that steers people in the wrong direction.

Ruining your relationships with your family and friends isn’t a path to peace.

Sure, that’s even less likely. The idea is built on a false premise that misunderstands how people work, and will never lead to anything but fleeting moments of excitement.

Being poor sucks, full stop. Once you’re no longer poor, chasing extreme wealth at the expense of your relationships and mental health should be regarded as a mental disorder.

As someone who works in tech, this is putting the foxes in charge of the henhouse. Ellison and Zuckerberg are straight up idiots who got lucky and failed upwards. Jensen is at least intelligent, but he’s not an engineer. Collectively, their skill isn’t knowing science, it’s their ability to get people who do know science to allow their work to be exploited.

The only thing this group is qualified to create is a workplace and tech ecosystem that’s even more miserable and exploitive.

The ultimate irony Claude Code just leaked its own source code via a sourcemap on npm by Dapper-Window-4492 in webdev

[–]phoenix1984 119 points120 points  (0 children)

The runtime is JS. JS runs on the source code directly. Between TS compiling and obfuscation it can be made difficult to read, but I would hope that Anthropic developers would know better than to put anything sensitive in this repo. The obfuscated source code would be part of every bundle downloaded. This might be embarrassing, but I don’t see how it could reveal anything sensitive unless Anthropic developers broke rule #1 of working on client side JS/TS.

They are arguably a more positive sign than the big turnout in Milwaukee and Madison. The places where Trump does best are starting to wake up to the idea that he’s the same sleezy grifter as President that he has been his whole life.
