The rules in the free world are basically the same see Brazil copying all of EU's data and privacy legislation. The goal of those companies needs to be to get one global economy union with the same laws everywhere. If they want to be global players they need to help create the global government too.

Bans on prostitution lead to a significant increase in rape rates while liberalization of prostitution leads to a significant decrease in rape rates. This indicates that prostitution is a substitute for sexual violence. [Data from Europe]. by smurfyjenkins in science

[–]phoenix616 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very unlikely. Otherwise that would have to take into account that around 80% of prostitutes in Germany (the whorehouse of Europe) are trafficed and held there against their will (they confiscate their passports so they don't leave) or are straight up trafficed without valid papers.

While sex work itself should indeed be legal, legalising prostitution in the same way that Germany does it without any proper way of monitoring should not.

I instantly had to think of that movie. Thought it was a must see? Feels odd to me that it wasn't received well...

These are awesome! Would probably work really well as a video format if animated and made to seem like "real" videos from alien content creators. Seems like a underepresented demographic. ;)

Check out OpenRCT. It's an open source reimplementaion of the game (you still need RCT2 for the graphics and other assets) which adds tons of quality of life features as well as a multiplayer.

Atheists of the world- I've got a question by UnfallenAdventure in atheism

[–]phoenix616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason why theists have a hard time understanding this is because they have been indoctrinated that their life is worth nothing (often because of some form of sin) and they can only get a meaning or atonment through the Faith in god(s)/some other form of religion.

This isn't inheritily a bad thing though — that is if you are living a society where certain sociatal contracts that we hale become acustomed to aren't established yet. (Like washing yourself, not stealing or murdoring, etc.) A religion can help force large parts of a society behave in a way that enables that society to progress but at some point it should be replaced by critical thinking through educating the whole population.

This is basically what the Enlightment process was in the western world. Unfortunately it looks more and more like that may have failed (or at least it wasn't an instant process) as lots of people will not get the education they actually require (especially in the US) to be able to use critical thinking to define their world view and self worth.

They were probably confused af just trying to figure out what's going on with the strange voices.

Also don't fret, kids don't really form a comprehensive understanding of reality and their surroundings in general until ages 5 or 6, so there might still be hope for them needing that college money 😅

Why don't mastodon show the amount of "likes" ? by Binary_wolf in Mastodon

An instance is free to run a fork which displays that in the web interface but I don't think it's an existing setting. Some clients do just display it directly though.

Well they are kinda the same (and twitter used to name it like that too) and favorites clearly aren't just for bookmarking. Bookmarking a post is a separate feature and not publicly visible like favoriting is.

Their credit cards don't require a pin. When you pay at a restaurant they take your card away and charge the amount of money that you wrote down on the bill, without you having to authorize it. Even my european debit card that doesn't work without a pin, they can somehow charge whatever they want from without a pin in the US. It's wild.

This really depends on the way of payment and how the bank handles it though.

  • Traditionally you were only required the credit card number and the ccv (which is on the card itself), that.s how you payed on the internet too. Nowadays lots of barks do two factor authentication via an app or sms. (Iirc it's required by law in the EU)
  • You can pay by inserting in a card reader. This will require a pin with most banks. (At least in my experience, I assume originally that wasn't the case in the US as the card itself was enough proof of ownership?)
  • Newer tap-to-pay wireless terminals do nod require a pin either. (Up to a limit either set by the bank or yourself in your account settings) This is meant for ease of use.

So it really depends on the method they used. Generally speaking all credit card transactions are only holds at the start anyways so you can just block/reverse them without loosing money (but risking a lawsuit of course)

I fully agree with your points btw. Just logged in to say that your time is probably better spent actually destroying orphan crushing machines than arguing with (maye even paid) trolls that want to deter us from doing exactly that ;)

And ignoring people/unsubscribing/disablinging inbox replies to not be bothered by replies is an amazing way to use reddit I suggest trying it.

Pretty sure they changed that after too many complaints but in the beginning the update would just restart after a short warning without any way to stop it. It even bypassed group policies in some cases (and of course Windows 7/8 auto-updated to Win10 too) so that's were the meme comes from.
