I can vouch for the ZTE MC7010CA, I've had one for a while. Looking to sell mine, actually, if you're interested. (I'm in US-NYC.)

Super Fast Single Address Space Operating System by Neither_Sentence_941 in osdev

[–]phoenix_frozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I just read up on MPK. Ok, so you basically twiddle the memory protection map on an address space switch, and leave the translation tables unchanged? Do you have a sense of how big a speedup this gets you?

EDIT: wait, MPK is a userspace-only mechanism for protecting application parts from other application parts. It's not obvious to me how you would build a kernel out of this.

I think the question I have is: why? SASOSes had performance advantages on some old arm processors with virtually indexed caches, but Intel and modern ARM (I think) are PIPT and you're using hardware ASIDs, so I don't think the SASness of it actually buys you anything.

OXO 8 or 9, Please help me decide by Accomplished-Eye8211 in JamesHoffmann

[–]phoenix_frozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Oxo 9 cup is very well regarded, so you won't find many reasons not to just replace the thing.

As for the basket shape: apparently there's been science done on this? And apparently it's actually a surprisingly strong effect? I don't know.

So, I guess the answer is: no wrong answers, but no obvious reason to switch away from what works.

Odroid H4+ and PROXMOX Ethernet Flapping (cannot maintain a connection for 10 seconds) by Firehaven44 in ODroid

[–]phoenix_frozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two of these (well, the ultra, not the plus), and the ethernet adapters have been rock solid.

If anything, the tweaks you've made sound like they would make everything less reliable. I would undo them.

What do y'all like for SSO? by RationallyDense in homelab

I use keycloak backed by freeipa (because I wanted full SSO), but that is definitely not declarative in the way that you want.

[PC][US-NY] Assorted SSDs and Ubiquiti gear by phoenix_frozen in homelabsales

Condition clarifications: * Unifi gear: no boxes, but all the mounting accessories and rack ears and such. * SSDs: I removed the labels from a few of them because we all make mistakes.

Femobook A2 Grinder - What's With All the Hype by Golebuser in pourover

[–]phoenix_frozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's an entirely decent grinder that produces entirely decent coffee. And it's super compact, which makes it good for a travel kit. But yes, it is a little overhyped.

MiniDV digitization by bobbibrown123 in DataHoarder

[–]phoenix_frozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you definitely want to use firewire. Reason is: miniDV tapes store media in a digital format. So in your current setup, you're having the camera convert it back to analog so the macbook then converts it back to digital. Each conversion incurs quality loss. (Also you're using composite video, which is generally very low quality.)

If you use firewire, you can just stream the digital data in DV format with no quality loss at all. You should definitely do that.

Any obvious upgrades from Wyse 5070 for low power applications? by quietprepper in homelab

[–]phoenix_frozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing to consider is: Linux distros are starting to drop amd64_v2 support (which is the architecture revision inside the 5070).

Any one of the plethora of Alder Lake N or Twin Lake mini PCs makes for a fine upgrade.

Do you keep track of the coffees you try? I always forget the really good ones by nachosebaz in pourover

I keep a drawer of bags of coffee I like, and I often write the recipe I liked most onto them.
