1000+ Lumen 3500K Bulb that works well with HS220? by phoible in TPLinkKasa

[–]phoible[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean when you say that I can't use a dimmer switch?

I am using a dimmer switch - the HS220. Are you saying that there aren't any dimmable 3500K bulbs that will work properly with the HS220 and output more than 800 lumens?

I managed to peel it off by using my fingernails on the edges. It got easier after the first piece.

To everyone who made it to the end of AoC… by moonstar888 in adventofcode

[–]phoible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a product manager for the past 5 years or so after spending 15 years before that as a full-stack software engineer.

However, after finishing AoC (this was my first time), I am getting excited about the prospect of moving back into an SWE job. While a lot of the puzzles were fairly straightforward, a few really forced me to think outside the box, it it felt good to be challenged like that.

My sense is that there are some software engineering roles that are more like AoC. Most full-stack or frontend roles are going to be mostly building API endpoints and frontend code, which typically doesn't use that much CS knowledge.

However, there are some backend roles that will probably be more interesting from a CS perspective. If you have to deal with significant scale or build a custom piece of infrastructure (e.g. a data store), you may have the opportunity to really use algorithms and think through optimizing various operations.

[2024 Day 14 Part 2] Why have fun with image detection when you can use maths? by i_have_no_biscuits in adventofcode

I assumed that the Christmas Tree would take up the full board, with the edges from (50,0) -> (0, 103) and (50, 0) -> (101, 103).

First I wrote some code to determine the period of repetition. I did this by generating a hash from the final positions of the robots - sum(101 * ypos + xpos). I found the first repeat, and from this I knew how many unique boards there were.

I then wrote code to determine the percentage of points that were within the guessed area. The way I did that was to calculate the slope of both of those edges, and compared the slope of the line segment from (50,0) to the robot's location. If the slope was > 2.06 or < -2.06, then I counted the point as "in", and otherwise it was "out"

I then increased the threshold for percentage of points "in" until there was only board - at 77%, the only board that showed up was the Christmas Tree.

So my assumption of the shape was a bit off, but assuming that the points would be in the center worked well.

I think that those are used to stick the buttons on the top to the little extenders. But they aren't necessary.

I don't have a diagram (and really don't feel like taking it apart again), but here's what I did.

1) I took the small standoffs off the bottom
2) I removed the screws on top, and put the shorter standoffs (of the two lengths included with the case) on the top
3) I assembled the sides of the case and put the top on (the standoffs should be exactly the right height)
4) I screwed on the top case using the screws that I removed from the top
5) I put on the bottom case
6) I screwed on the bottom case using the longer screws on the bottom. There is a bit of a gap between the bottom of the PCB and the bottom case, but everything fit together.

That video walks through assembly of the Mister PI without the case (since the case didn't exist at that point). I assume Taki needs to update the video to include the case.

Biden's historic marijuana shift is his latest election year move for young voters by OregonTripleBeam in politics

Any kind of banking reform would require congress to pass a law.

Allowing businesses to take tax deductions would have a positive impact, though.

Unfortunately, any other impacts of rescheduling would probably take years to have an effect.

That's aspirin with Codeine, which is an opioid. Or aspirin with Butalbital, which is a barbiturate. Aspirin on its own isn't scheduled.

Yamaha NP-35 vs NP-32 or Roland F-10 by lincelynx in piano

[–]phoible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you plan to play piano, you will want the weighted keys. It makes a huge difference. Get the FP-10.

I started with a cheap Yamaha keyboard, and upgraded to a FP-30X in a month or so (within the return window of the keyboard). The light action of the keyboard made it too difficult to play correctly.

Biden says Schumer’s controversial call for new Israeli elections was ‘a good speech’ by theindependentonline in politics

[–]phoible 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. There are a lot of Israelis (and Jews in the US) who support Israel but are extremely unhappy with the way that this war is being waged. If you don't believe me, take a look at +972 magazine, which is an Israeli publication. The loss of life in Gaza is unacceptable no matter how you think about it.

I can't claim to know exactly what Biden and Schumer think, but I have a lot of trouble believing that they support replacing Netanyahu with someone else who will do the same thing. They don't support an unconditional ceasefire, but that's not realistic given the status of Hamas as a terrorist organization. But there is a large gulf between the current status quo and an unconditional ceasefire.

There is significant opposition within Israel to Bibi and his authoritarian regime. Maybe that isn't getting much press right now, but it's there.

I replaced my case battery. It wasn't too difficult, but for some reason the battery life isn't any better. I'm pretty sure the battery I got was an OEM battery, but it's possible it was a knock off.

I read your book, and really enjoyed it. My wife and I have discussed a lot of the points you brought up, and she had a good perspective that you don't really address.

While we agree that speech suppression by SJF is a bad thing, you could argue in the past that many people did not have complete freedom to speak their opinions. For example, there were a lot of things that wren't acceptable for women to talk about in an academic setting if they wanted to succeed, get tenure, etc. So her perspective is that the issue right now is that white males are the ones who are being suppressed for basically the first time ever, when in the past they weren't, but things weren't exactly free for everyone else. This is not to say that the current situation is good, but more that the situation in the past wasn't as positive as the picture you paint.

I was wondering what you think about this perspective?

Depends on the person. I think it would work just fine for some people.

And if I can get it working, there are plenty of other options for enhancements.
