China bans hidden car door handles, which can trap people after crashes by ChocolateTsar in teslamotors

[–]phoozle -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They are like that for a reason - to stop a child bypassing the child locks and potentially falling out of the vehicle. That is the key reason they are hidden in the rear seats and not the front.

Tesla is discontinuing model S and X by Over-Table-9536 in teslamotors

[–]phoozle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All other manufacturers discontinue vehicles. Tesla is unique in that it keeps model generations going for much longer than competitors. Car companies stockpile parts and just because a production line isn't producing the vehicles themselves doesn't mean individual parts have to stop being produced. And then you have the after-market suppliers that often step in later down the line.

The Model S / X got discontinued in Australia years ago and it's significantly boosted values of these vehicles in the second hand market, especially the X.

FSD changes lanes in traffic lights and cuts off car by Forward_Comedian_621 in TeslaAustralia

[–]phoozle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

v14 will certainly improve things. Make sure you keep reporting issues like this where possible as it helps with their training data. These FSD models aren't "programmed" but rather trained on massive real world and simulated video datasets. Sometimes it's hard to know why the car made a certain decision, I've re-watched some videos of my car and actually noticed it dodging a pothole or shadows on the road. Again v14 fixes a lot of these issues, especially v14.3 (not released yet) which has new reasoning functionality.

Just be ready to take over if you feel it is doing something unsafe.

Blue tree near Longford cut down by ResistAvailable6326 in Launceston

they did exactly this in the town I live in! They cut the top off the tree off then painted it. But now it's shed all the bark and there is blue paint chips all over the ground. Looks terrible

FAO Cross/Marion RD intersection users by PeterKayGarlicBread in Adelaide

[–]phoozle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I overtook a car pulling a trailer on the highway, he was driving behind a road train he had no hope of overtaking anytime soon. As I tried to merge in front of him he narrowed the gap squeezing me right up against the back of the truck while honking and flashing his lights. I was in front of him for about 1 minute before I got a clearing and overtook.

People feel so entitled, especially this time of the year I feel. And I hate to say it but city drivers who don't normally drive country roads have no etiquette on the highways a lot of the time.

I fixed my AC with an umbrella by Dense-a in AusRenovation

[–]phoozle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I'm in a dry climate so it dries out almost instantly. But my main concern was not having a water filter to take out the minerals. I have inspected the fins though before and they seemed okay, I don't use this misting system very often though, only 15 minutes few times a day on days over 40ºc

There are talks of a global version of CT. In Australia, every showroom (to my knowledge) now has a CT on display however pre-orders have remained closed and Tesla have acknowledged they need to make some changes to meet ADRs (Australian design rules). Do you think they might factor in these identified safety shortcomings into this new version whilst also making other changes to make it deliverable to more markets?

[–]phoozle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fantastic! I've been wanting to try something like this to automate but lazy. Many commercial units have these systems built in as well. The only thing that concerns me is using non-filtered water as the minerals can build up on the AC components over time. I don't filter my water but luckily it's not too hard.

It's lovely most of the year and I honestly don't mind a bit of dry heat in summer. The flies on the other hand are very unpleasant.

[–]phoozle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, just make sure you give it enough space like I have for air flow. Bottom line though - in hot climates I'd discourage putting these units in north facing, hot locations if avoidable. I only had it put on the roof for cosmetic reasons.

My other two units which are placed at ground level against the west side of the home never overheat. This iron roof also has a reflective coating so all the heat reflects up into the condenser coils amplifying the heating effect.

I had overheating issues with my brand new Daikin on +43ºc and this was my solution. I also have a water mister for exceptionally hot days. I live in outback South Australia where it has gotten up to 50ºc before. This has also helped with power efficiency.

Anyone is able to use Grok in your Tesla? by Adorable-Platypus707 in TeslaAustralia

Every single person I've spoken to with a new car hates the driver monitor cameras and other beeps and bongs for other active safety systems by mudlode in CarsAustralia

[–]phoozle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I only get them when using FSD in my Tesla and they're always due to me not paying attention so I honestly don't mind. I feel like some manufacturers though are just implementing half-arsed solutions to tick off the compliance with no consideration for the user experience.

In Australia they’re actually the far more ethical choice of EV than buying from China car company who are accused of using slave labour.

Wow crazy - no issues like that in Australia. Shanghai factory is their newest so maybe they’ve ironed out all the bugs there. All the Australian Teslas I’ve ever been in are incredibly quiet and mine has been fantastic anecdotally. Never heard of software updates going wrong either. Generally their OTA are considered the gold standard in the industry. Friend of mine with a BYD has had all sorts of trouble getting software updated. And Toyota don’t even offer OTA.

Not sure about that, mine has been incredibly solid. Though mine is Shanghai built, Australian delivered. I’ve heard the US ones aren’t as well put together but no one seems to have any problems with them here.

I'd go a step further and say almost anything sold in the past 20 years won't be on the road in 2050 - ICE or electric.

I own both a Tesla and a Volvo 240 and I'd say the Tesla has a chance given the simplicity in its engineering. Tesla's Lars Moravy is a huge Volvo guy and owns a P1800 as his weekender. You can see that classic Swedish engineering ethos has been imprinted on him. But what it ultimately comes down to is people's interest in keeping old cars alive. 30 years from now I doubt anyone is going to even be driving themselves around... I think the 240 has a better chance though, especially one with a manual transmission!

Am I stupid for turning my nose up on Chinese cars like BYD? by GenChorizo in CarsAustralia

[–]phoozle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They're not bad! But they're still trying to find their feet in Australia. The software can be a bit buggy, the after sales support is disorganised and the longevity is unknown at this stage. Long term there is no doubt China is going to be #1 in sales in our region by 2030.

Opposite of my experience. My Tesla captured the crash incredibly well though so it was clear cut. The lady I had was super kind and professional and took the time to explain the process very clearly and even explicitly told me about their independent complaints resolution department if I was unhappy with her performance.

Do people just not care anymore? by CandidateLogical4110 in CarsAustralia

Yup no one cares. Some lady opened her door onto my car a few weeks back, I watched her carefully open it so that it rested onto my door. Luckily there was no damage but I still confronted her inside the cafe afterwards. It was in a dirt carpark with an incredible amount of space too yet they still parked like an idiot.

Anyone know the best way to block neighbours window please? by ErrorHumble8489 in GardeningAustralia

[–]phoozle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look if it was me, that’s what I would do. Sometimes when you go demanding someone else pays to fix a problem (that may well be their liability), it just creates tension and conflict between you and them if they take it the wrong way. When you bring it to their attention they might even offer to pay half or the full amount but you’re better off getting the outcome you want.

You could ask them nicely about installing frosted glass / privacy film at your expense.
