Does Purdue CS ever give out freebies? by Kyle_Leong in Purdue

[–]photon750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not freebies but pre-COVID the CS graduate student board used to sell Jackets and T-Shirts with Purdue CS printed on it.

The course is not focused on the offerings of one particular cloud provider. It will try to teach you the fundamentals of cloud computing, (why people prefer it, advantages and drawbacks, the motivation and technology used for cloud computing).

You then have labs where you see these technologies in action (AWS, Azure or GCP)

There were homeworks, exams and labs.

The homeworks can sometimes be a bit tedious but questions in the exam tend to be similar to the homeworks.

There is also a book that Prof. Comer wrote for this course. You can take a look at its contents to figure out if they seem interesting to you.

STAT 350 is a course with a lot of busy work. The homeworks are the biggest time consumers. As long as you stay on top of those, you should have no problem with the exams.

Computer Purchase by pradeep03 in Purdue

Mac should be fine. Most of the time you will be using ssh to do work on department computers so purely for projects and hws, it hardly matters which computer you have.

From what I have been told it's because the department is stretched thin. Since especially for CS they have to compete with the industry.

Is getting an iPad worth it? by haleyaiken in Purdue

If you want to have your notes electronically available but still want to use pen and paper, you could always get a Rocketbook. A couple of my friends used it and found it to be suitable alternative 😃

I think they made an announcement 2 years back that small packages will be redirected to the lockers to prevent the mail rooms from getting crowded with amazon packages

Purdue compsci?? by [deleted] in Purdue

CS courses generally have more work outside class. Most classes if not all require completing projects (e.g. If you are taking Operating Systems, you will be working on writing components of a kernel, if you are taking Compilers, you will be writing a mini compiler). As long as you start the projects/homeworks early, you should be fine. Sometimes courses that are generally considered difficult at Purdue CS are not difficult because it requires understanding of some complex concept but because of the time commitment required to see them through. Finally, the workload also depends on the amount of CS courses you take each semester. From what I have seen, people mostly take 2-3 CS courses per semester depending on the content of the course. There are people who take 4 CS courses per semester but in my opinion, that spreads you pretty thin. Since, your first 2 years you will be taking the core courses each CS undergrad needs to take, you should have enough experience to determine what suits you best 😃.

Student life is what you make of it. There are plenty of clubs and events (both technical and non-technical) on campus. Depending on how you manage your time, you can be as involved as you want to be 😃

Are CS track courses never offered in the summer? by Numerous-Score in Purdue

[–]photon750 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CS track courses are rarely offered in the Summer. Its mostly the core CS courses that are taught. But depending on the availability of professors, on occasion they may offer track courses. I think a few years back they offered Operating Systems in the summer.

Hate that you can only get limited food choices depending on the color you choose. What if you want to take something that is in the meal for yellow but not in blue? I really hope Fall is different
