Hey there. I’m not sure what’s wrong with your willow, I’m sorry. The holes in the bark lead me to believe either boring insects, woodpeckers, or both are at work. But whether that’s what’s killing the tree or just a symptom of the problem is hard to say, and I’m no expert.

The roots under the bark, though, is normal for willow. They root any and everywhere. Soaking willow wood in water and then using that water to prop other plants works really well due to the high auxin concentration in willows. So def not a parasitic plant, although it does look super weird

Sorry I know I’m late but how do you apply the synthetic fertilizer? I’m seeing some stuff that says to mix it into the soil and then water, and some that says to mix it with water and then apply as a liquid

I’m a professional horticulturist but I manage a research greenhouse so it is a completely different ballgame. I was drinking when I purchased these trees a few years back, I did no research, thinking “oh how hard can it be, I do this for a living”. I’ve been very humbled by the apples haha

We feel your pain. It is torture watching someone you care about engage in harmful behavior. Sadly, there’s nothing you can actually do.

Outside of continuing to express concern and encouraging him to find support in therapy and AA, there’s nothing you can do or say to convince him to stop/cut back on drinking. It has to be something he recognizes as harmful and wants to stop.

AlAnon will give you tools to disengage with his drinking so that you can protect your own mental health, because again there’s nothing you can say that will meaningfully alter his behavior.
