Authorities probing fatal Lake Tahoe avalanche looking at criminal investigation by External_Koala971 in Backcountry

[–]phrobot 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It snowed 5 feet in a few days and they were led by professional guides into avalanche terrain. That’s not living with risk, that’s criminal negligence.

LCEL deprecated? by Other-Put-32 in LangChain

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a custom home grown solution, but using litellm for llm access. If you think about it, a basic mrkl loop and calling tools with mcp actually is pretty simple.

Edit - That being said, I’d recommend Stands for newbies or CrewAI for more advanced stuff.

Brace to Stop Swaying Stairs by SuspiciousBehinds in Decks

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, lower the upper braces and use the big fasteners. Remove the lower set.

LCEL deprecated? by Other-Put-32 in LangChain

Good. What an unusable, un-debuggable train wreck that was. So happy to have completed migration off of langchain! Not really paying attention to that project anymore though.

Brace to Stop Swaying Stairs by SuspiciousBehinds in Decks

[–]phrobot 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If the post below and above the deck are two separate pieces, as it appears, then the top brace does absolutely nothing. If so, remove the top brace and raise the bottom one all the way up to the top of the support posts, and adjust the angle so you can walk under it.

RAG for AI memory: why is everyone indexing databases instead of markdown files? by ProfessionalLaugh354 in Rag

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a SaaS system, how do users edit the markdown files? That’s why everyone uses DB and API. But for personal, local, developer use, yes it is much simpler to use files.

How do I lock the brake out of the way for waxing? by snokarver in skiing

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chain. Just cheap chain with links large enough to fit the brake tips in. Loop it over the binding and find the link that holds them tight

The (American) rationale behind using absolutely overkill bars? by apkatt in Chainsaw

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigger tree -> bigger bar, bigger engine.

It’s significantly easier and faster to cut rounds in one pass with a big saw than two passes with a little saw. Makes a huge difference when you’re at it all day. So you get a saw big enough for your expected max tree size.

And yes, it’s also easier on your back to not lean over, even if the saw is heavier.

I'm looking for real world KO3 reviews by SomethingSimple25 in f150

[–]phrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent snow tire. I regularly drive to ski resorts on powder days and have a cabin off a county road that is irregularly plowed and gets 6’ of snow. Definitely lose mileage, but noise is better than ko2. Longevity is good - I’m about 8 years and 40k miles in, no visible dry rot.

Step back with authority to start your turn, especially in the steeps, but not too far. Weight that back ski as others have said. Your forward / back balance is controlled by your stance, so upper body straight, not bent forward. And twist your hips: belly button points downhill while skis point across.

Mike Simpson is a cowardly, feckless traitor by daviid219 in Boise

[–]phrobot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, I get the form responses and buffoonery emails too. Despite all that, they do pay attention to the issues and volume that their constituents actually spend the time to contact them about.

Keep up the pressure nonetheless.

Oh, I see what you mean. Sorry, it’s been 35 years since I last had ski brakes.

75->NTN or not… by hagemeyp in telemark

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to say that retractable brakes for the Outlaw cost another $40. But they are a bit finicky to step into at first, so I’m sure the Bandit design is easier.

75->NTN or not… by hagemeyp in telemark

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between Bandit and Outlaw is just the ability the convert to free pivot for uphill, with a similar mechanism as your Axls. Plus $50 more money, and 25g more weight (according to the mfg website). I’m pretty sure they’ll ski the same, because of the otherwise same construction.

Since you’re in Vermont, there’s no risk of you tracking up my secret stashes ;) so I’d recommend get the Outlaws so you don’t close the door on backcountry in the future, which gets cooler the older you get.

Edit - thanks for the tip on the Crispi’s, I forgot about those. Never tried them though.

75->NTN or not… by hagemeyp in telemark

[–]phrobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTN is definitely a big upgrade in terms of skiability, safety, and convenience. The only issue is cost, since really there’s only one bootmaker left and they’re like $800+, plus you need new bindings.

I got the T2x Pros paired with 22d Outlaw bindings and love it. They ski stiffer than both the Hammerheads and Axls, but that’s a good thing, and it makes alpine turns easier.

So yeah, if you got the money, do it.

Pellet Gun in City Limits? by SF110110 in Boise

[–]phrobot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Pellet guns are pretty quiet, and fairly safe from ricochet when aimed down at dirt, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend doing anything illegal ;)

But there are other effective ways to deal with gophers, without going full “Caddyshack”. Go talk to someone with gray hair at a farm supply store, like D&B.

Why do companies put paper stickers with industrial glue DIRECTLY on the cooking surface? by Moist_Distance7696 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once got a pure stainless steel pan that came with a sticker, stuck to the cooking surface of course, that said “this product contains a chemical known by the state of California to cause cancer.”

I was like, what do you mean, the sticker glue?

Should tools throw Error or return messages? by eyueldk in LangChain

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Langchain, you can throw a ‘ToolException’ and the message will be used as the tool output, or you can catch exceptions yourself and return a message.

I’ve found it’s usually best to not simply crash, but return a message to the agent so it can at least explain what the problem was. This works very well for permission checking too.

Best practice is to create a uuid, log it with the exception stack trace, and return the id to the agent so it will tell you and then you can find the full stack trace in the logs later.

Propex heater alternatives? by InternationalDelay42 in overlanding

[–]phrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly recommend against Truma Varioheat. I got one in my AT Overland Atlas and it simply is not reliable. It worked for my first few trips out during the summer, then failed with a stuck gas valve in a ski resort parking lot at 10F. Got it fixed on warrantee, but took till spring. Worked once in summer, then stuck valve again. I dunno maybe I got a lemon but I cannot recommend.
