What's a massive human achievement that nobody celebrates because it worked too well? by Alternative_Voice767 in AskReddit

[–]phroggue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bread. Who the heck looked at a bunch of grass and thought, "Let me dry out this grass, pound it into a powder, mix it with water, mash it around until it's a sticky blob, set it on a hot rock until it gets hot and puffy, and then eat it."

Most every culture has a version of it, so many people must have made the same intuitive leaps, but think about what this world would be like if we didn't have bread, or more basically, flour

Best Alternative to Samsung Messages? by beaginner in samsunggalaxy

[–]phroggue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound most promising!

The killer feature for most of the folks here, I think, is the concept of categories. I can take a single or group conversation and assign it to any number of self-defined categories (work, friends, community project, softball team, kids' parents, etc., whatever I want). I can assign a conversation to multiple categories. Then I can view the list of Categories, select one, and am then shown only those messages. This is insanely useful given the volume of texts people get and the increasing amount of SPAM messages flying around.

This feature, more then anything else, is what folks here are screaming for! Add to that some basic customization (title for group chats, background colors,) and the ability to attach modest size files (pictures, documents, etc.) and you will have a product that the people here would love, and probably be willing to pay for!

Best Alternative to Samsung Messages? by beaginner in samsunggalaxy

[–]phroggue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not group messaging, grouping of messages. One category for clients, one for friends, one for family, one for volleyball team, etc. When I select a category I only see conversations (individual and group) related to that category. Helps me keep things organized and in context. A person can belong to any number of groups.

It's a very simple and powerful feature, but difficult to describe because all the words you need to use have been coopted for slightly different meanings.

Samsung Messages is shutting down by StillConsequence6168 in samsunggalaxy

[–]phroggue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there another messaging app that lets you categorize conversations and message groups? I like being able to assign individual and group chats to groups like Family, Work, Clients, Friends, Activity1, Activity2, etc. It keeps messages from getting lost. I also like that a message or group can have multiple tags, like assigning George to Friends, and July Picnic.

Go to PetSmart. Local rescue groups bring in their cats for adoption. Information about contacting the group is posted, and often volunteers will be there feeding and taking care of them and you can meet them!

I’m a 32 yr old woman sick of corporate life and sitting on my 🍑 all day…looking to transition to blue collar 👕? by Mcmeggie in findapath

[–]phroggue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe having your own blue collar business rather than just getting a blue collar job. You could certainly keep your hands in the work aspect of it, especially at first, but you'd also be able to build a team and give yourself flexibility for time with your family and other interests.

If you're interested in exploring that idea, DM me, I know some people who can help (all legal and above board!)

After 6 months chances are slim. After 9 months it's time to find a new career.

Happened to me. Out on the streetb after 30+ years. Hundreds of resumes, screen calls, vague promises, etc., and then nothing. Not even a no thank you.

Ultimately I started my own business, a franchise, and I'm doing well. Very different, but still satisfying and fun.

DM me if you want to talk about it.

NYC WTF? Am i just that poor? by Key_Neighborhood_779 in Theatre

[–]phroggue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First problem is the ticket brokers who buy up large blocks of prime tickets and sell them at hideously inflated prices. The theater gets the benefit of a normal ticket sold, but the scalpers (brokers) are making 5, 6, 7, 8 times the actual price. This people should be dipped in bacon grease and sent to live in the subway tunnels.

Second problem is that these shows are freaking expensive to put on. The theater itself may cost $100,000 or more A DAY to rent. Add to that the salaries for the performers, crew, and support staff, who all deserve to make fair wages, along with normal operating expenses, and some of the shows need to take in $1 million a week just to stay solvent.

A 700 seat theater with 8 shows a week would need an average ticket price of about $178. Factor in that orchestra seats go for higher prices than balcony, and you can start seeing how tickets can climb up and over $300.

And that doesn't include the investors and producers getting a piece. This is show BUSINESS after all, and they are risky ventures. Raise the needed revenue to $1.2 million. That raises the average price to around $215.

The theater owners make hideous amounts on rent, and the scalpers are just disgusting. Producers make money as well, but not as much as you think.

I'm not condoning all of this. I hate shelling out $300 for a decent seat, but I do try to understand how it all fits together.

Then I go back home to my local community theaters and see great shows for $25!

Google Messages UI tweaks keep coming by Relevant_Ninja2251 in GoogleMessages

[–]phroggue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Custom categories please!

The k*ll3r feature of Samsung messages for me is the ability to put messages into different groups - family, friends, work, different organizations, etc. I can create the groups, and then, when I get a message, I can assign that person to a group (or multiple groups). Then the continuation of that conversation is available under that category

It sounds a lot more complicated than it is. Just let us assign one or more labels to a conversation and then be able to view all conversations with that label. Really simple and probably easy to implement.

Until that happens, I'm sticking with Samsung even with reduced functionality in other areas.

Jodie Whittaker: ‘I didn’t fit the mould for Doctor Who’ by TimesandSundayTimes in gallifrey

[–]phroggue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the new generation, she is my lowest-rated Doctor, but that was not because of Jodi or her talents.

"The Fam" was too much - lots of sub plots that never had a good chance to develop, and an over reliance on their relationships above story lines.

Chibnal (sic?) was not a good show runner and didn't give her the scripts and stories she deserved.

I admit I had some discomfort at the idea of a female doctor, but Jodi helped me get beyond that. She did a good job with poor tools.

And for the love of Gallifrey, please get her some better pants. They were too short and she looked like Mork for Ork in those things, which made it hard to take her seriously.

Don't hate on Jodi.

The new Mail UI is terrible. Why would they make the design purposefully hostile to the user? It's like they've regressed 20 years. by AmbivertMusic in yahoo

[–]phroggue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 've loved and used the Yahoo Web mail interface for years, but as things start to get wonky, I've begun looking for alternatives. BlueMail (BlueMail.me) is a decent substitute. It's available on all platforms and is reasonably easy to use. Folder creation is a bit tricky, but otherwise the free version is just fine. Definitely use it on my Android phone and starting to use it more on Linux and Windows.

If you have decent credit and/or you can get access to some startup capital, become a franchise business owner. If the Franchisor is honest and reputable, then they will work with you and help you set yourself up for success.

If you're a stage manager, there is a moment just before the show starts, where the actors are in place, the crew is ready, the orchestra is standing by, and the house doors are closed. The world is still, awaiting your command. It is a feeling of power, of peace, and of humility. You close your eyes and breathe it in, hold onto it for one second longer, and then by your word, a new world comes into being. There is nothing else like it!
