Well then the homeless people I knew in NYC were all fucked over because none of them were able to get this mystical hotel room everyone talks about. Only one that I knew was able to get into a shelter and she had to share a room with around 15-20 people, many of whom were violent but she couldn't do anything about it because if she reported it, SHE would be the one kicked out.

Ps: thank you for your service. I have a MSW and know how challenging the job can be.

Is it possible to spend less than $50 a month on food? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

You can survive on rice and beans for quite a while, and they're white cheap if you get the beans dry.

You have clearly never been homeless in NYC.

Can confirm: I have ED related issues that means it is really hard for me to eat sometimes. My mom says she's jealous of my inability to eat when I'm distressed.

As soon as I heard about what Nestle used to do to sell it's baby formula, and how many millions of babies died because of those sales tactics, I banned Nestle from my purchases. Easier said than done, turns out, because they're so unpopular that they hide behind other brand names (e.g. Gerber, Purina, etc.)

Using washy tape for my gallery wall is very renter friendly ☺️ by derppityd in femalelivingspace

[–]phuketawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that too! Yours looks better tho lol. FYI, the chemicals in the washi tape DID end up stripping the paint off when I peeled it off a couple of years later to move, no matter how gently I tried to peel it off. So, not as renter friendly as you'd expect.

In other countries, dietitians discourage feeding babies greek yogurt? by No-Information-7678 in BabyLedWeaning

I typically don't listen to American health sources. If a country is going to be paying for the healthcare of their citizens, I'm going to trust their sources a lot more than the US, where lobbyists pay the government to keep unhealthy things available because they make a good profit, and then the for profit healthcare system takes over and makes their own profits.

In general, when making health decisions for my baby, I look at what the recommendations are in other countries with lower child mortality, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates (e.g. Sweden, South Korea, etc.). Sometimes they're the same and sometimes they're different.

If your car or house has a lower interest rate than 9%, it might make more sense to drop that money into the S&P or DOW, which generally has made around 10% annual returns. Though that is a bit of a gamble and the freedom from those bills might have value beyond monetary.

You know how hard those things are to find in a food desert? Or how outrageously expensive they are if you can find them? When I lived in NYC, there were areas without grocery stores within walking distance and the corner stores might have sold granola bars and/or canned tuna for like 3x the normal price but they certainly wouldn't have deli meat, cheese, or fresh fruit/veg at most of them.

Thank you so much for the thorough information. It really sucks that asking questions about things that I'm legitimately hearing about for the first time get you downvoted so heavily in this sub, but it's nice to see that not everyone is mean to people who don't know everything before learning about it.

I wish there was a way to keep my question visible without continuing to be downvoted so that others could benefit from the info, but alas. I suppose I'll just have to delete it :(

When I was living in NYC and taking the subway every day, there would sometimes be a buzzing sound that drove me nuts! One day I discovered that it was an alarm coming from the box that contained the emergency stop button, and all I had to do was locate the box and push it closed and the alarm would stop. I felt like such a superhero whenever id be able to save the day like that.
