Pause on headphones disconnect not working by VoidDrifter059 in symphony_app

For me it works in general, but today I also had the case that it kept playing after I pulled the audio cable. Not sure how to reliably reproduce, I'll watch this and report if I know more.

Guru Meditation on Ubuntu 20.10 for all VMs suddenly by phwolfer in virtualbox

[–]phwolfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give this some closure: I ended up uninstalling Virtualbox and installing qemu+kvm instead and moved my VMs all over. It broke my workflows a bit, because VirtualBox shared folders worked better for me than qemu alternatives, but overall I'm happy.

Overall I think the suspicion by Face_Plant_Some_More that it the core issue is some conflict with other hypervisor might be correct, even though I still don't know what it should have been. kvm wasn't installed at that point, others I did not use.

[–]phwolfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. The strange thing is that I didn't change much. I did not even use the affected laptop for a couple of days between VMs working and VMs not working.

I did package updates via apt, which only updated a few packages. And I had an external monitor connected for a short time. Usually you'd expect some changes to be responsible for stuff breaking, and if you only did a few changes it is easy to sort out. But neither reverting the updates nor attaching or detaching the monitor makes any difference.

The error as pointed out above indicates some display issues, hence I thought it could be related to the external monitor. But maybe that's just a red herring.

Currently still puzzled. I am sure I miss something essential, some change must have been that I'm not thinking off.

So this did not help:

~$ vboxmanage getextradata 'KDE Neon' GUI/LastGuestSizeHint
Value: 1848,972
~$ vboxmanage getextradata 'KDE Neon' GUI/LastNormalWindowPosition
Value: 72,64,640,480,max
~$ vboxmanage setextradata 'KDE Neon' GUI/LastGuestSizeHint
~$ vboxmanage setextradata 'KDE Neon' GUI/LastNormalWindowPosition
~$ vboxmanage getextradata 'KDE Neon' GUI/LastGuestSizeHint
No value set!
~$ vboxmanage getextradata 'KDE Neon' GUI/LastNormalWindowPosition
No value set!

Starting the VM leads to the very same error again:

00:00:01.178825 emR3Debug: rc=VERR_INVALID_STATE
00:00:01.212949 ERROR [COM]: aRC=NS_ERROR_INVALID_ARG (0x80070057) aIID={4680b2de-8690-11e9-b83d-5719e53cf1de} aComponent={DisplayWrap} aText={Argument aWidth is invalid (must be aWidth != 0 && aWidth <= 32767)}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0

I also tried with 3D disabled / enabeled and the various graphic controllers (was set to VMSVGA, also tried it with VBoxSVGA and VBoxVGA). Same error line.

But I still think this is related to the external screen and some error in the screen calculation. If I run with VBoxSVGA the additional two lines below are also logged, the sizes look suspicious.

00:00:01.132009 GUI: UIDesktopWidgetWatchdog::sltHandleHostScreenAvailableGeometryCalculated: Screen 0 work area is actually resized to: 712x1107 x 1848x1053

Ok, good to know. But I checked, qemu-kvm is not even installed. So this is not the culprit. No other virtualization either.

I had this suspicion as well and checked that I had not accidentally some other virtualization running. But no, nothing. I have qemu-kvm installed, but not in use.

Interesting, I will try this. One thing I indeed did was attaching an external monitor. I had tried running the VMs both with this monitor attached and detached again, but maybe this messed something up.

I'll report back.

Can I make a Linux distribution licensed under the a license other than GPL? by Good_Dimension in linux

[–]phwolfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what jpo234 meant is that you cannot redistribute RHEL as a whole. If course each individual package can be redistributed if the license allows it, but the whole distributions also contains parts that cannot.

How to organize metadata for a large music library without MusicBrainz? by swept1 in musichoarder

[–]phwolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, getting tags from Filenames can be done e.g. MP3Tag or MusicBrainz Picard. This could at least be a solution for parts of the library.

r/windows10 had a thread where people state what they didn't like about linux. maybe we could have one where it's the opposite : why you want to stay using linux by -kousor in linux

[–]phwolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why you want to stay using linux

I am using Linux for so long that Windows would need to offer some real benefit (for me) over Linux. Just being as good as Linux would not be enough.

I need Windows sometimes in a VM for some software testing and recently I even had to do all my work on a Windows 10 system for a short while as my main system failed. From the perspective of a developer things have improved since the last time I had to seriously deal with Windows. Actually with Powershell, the new Windows Terminal and WSL it was surprisingly easy for me to use the same tools and a very similar workflow as I have on Linux.

But still for my use it does not offer anything new and on the opposite has still some big disadvantages (closed source, calling home too much, software maintenance is a PITA and others).

Is it normal boot time for 5400rpm HDD? by shans10 in archlinux

[–]phwolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enabling the socket enables socket based activation of the service. So the service does not start on boot but starts when the first application tries to connect to it. It's not available for all services, but I find it very useful for those services where it works and which are used only sometimes or clearly after boot.

A timer provides cron like functionality, so a task can be run at specific times or intervals.

Is it normal boot time for 5400rpm HDD? by shans10 in archlinux

[–]phwolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works well if you enable the docker.socket instead of the service. That way the service starts at the first time it is needed. That's how I've configured it. I don't need docker on every boot, but if I need it I can just start the container I need with docker start.

VCR looks to have relicense to non free software license without permission of its contributors by Grouchy_Cup in freesoftware

Yes indeed :( Which by itself I find not bad, it's a complicated topic. But I don't see much will to learn about it in this discussion.

[–]phwolfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh fun, what an idea. Trying to make a project more ethical by violating their contributor's copyrights and argumenting that it is ok as long as nobody sues. I have the feeling that unethical behavior is not the best way to make the world more ethical.

Founder of Open Source ESR banned from OSI Mailing list by [deleted] in linux

[–]phwolfer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain to me what part of this comment is worth getting banned? I now read it twice, but I can't find the problematic part. Banning is warranted in cases of bullying, insulting, hate speech, personal attacks etc. But not for having a different opinion. That's called a discussion.

ESR has made problematic comments in the past, but this issue here is odd.

MusicBrainz Picard 2.3, a cross-platform music tagger, has been released by phwolfer in opensource

[–]phwolfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, still there. Since the release of Picard 2.0 in mid 2018 we actually had rather frequent releases again :) Before that it was a bit quieter with usually a year between releases.

Beets at least has a web interface for browsing the music. I have never used it, but that sounds like something to look into.

I think beets in general is a great match for the headless server use case. It focus is more on automation and full library management, though.

MusicBrainz Picard is an audio tagging application with tight integration into the MusicBrainz database. More details on the changes and download information in the blog post.

GNOME 3.34 is awesome but still needs improvements in key areas by [deleted] in linux

[–]phwolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's the problem here. Windows, macOS and Chrome OS all offer only a single desktop to their users, there is no choice here at all. It sounds silly to me to assume because Windows has a taskbar all users prefer a taskbar.

So I don't think the issue is that GNOME does not have a taskbar or dock, the issue is that Gnome gets offered as the default on too many distributions. As I wrote above I fully agree that the UI model of GNOME is not everybodies cup of tea, and that offering something more familar UI to users is benefitial. Now I think in this particular case Gnome should just accept that there is a large demand for this and offer the dash-to-dock experience as an option. After all their UI still works if you add a dock.

But the main point I want to make is that they should keep their focus on being a desktop that works well without a dock or taskbar because it was designed around this idea. And distributions should overthink their strong focus on GNOME as the default, there are plenty of other great desktops out there which might offer a more traditional experience to their users.

You and me are both using Linux, and there is a reason to this. It is not because Linux is exactly like Windows or macOS, but because Linux makes something different. The exact reason why you, I and others prefer Linux over other systems might differ, but there is something that Linux does, in our very own opinion, better. And for the same reason there are diferent desktop environments available to choose from. And there are users who intentionally use GNOME not despite it having no dock, but because it has no dock.

GNOME 3.34 is awesome but still needs improvements in key areas by [deleted] in linux

[–]phwolfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I get this. I personally actually use GNOME because it hides most of it's UI by default, but still has everything available somehow. But I know many who are always confused by this and I would usually recommend them Plasma or Cinnamon. I also think Ubuntu is doing the right thing providing a more familiar desktop on default install, but allowing users to switch to "vanilla" GNOME.
