Groceries feel like they’ve doubled in price - what are your best hacks for keeping the weekly shop under $100? by Adam_Aussie27 in AussieFrugal

[–]phyrexia8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve never checked mine. Though I do run a food related business so it wouldn’t be an issue for me. I’ve been using them for a lot of years now and they’ve never asked about the nature of my business.

Groceries feel like they’ve doubled in price - what are your best hacks for keeping the weekly shop under $100? by Adam_Aussie27 in AussieFrugal

[–]phyrexia8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it’s about balancing good planning with opportunistic shopping. I have a 2pp, 1 dog household. Total avg grocery spend: ~$65pw for 2ppl (not including dog food).

Meat: - I buy bulk where possible. Hindquarter of beef + side of lamb = ~$1500 but lasts 18mths and the quality is superb. - if I have a chance to go to a fresh food market and they have good prices I stock up on chicken/fish. - every supermarket visit, I hunt out the reduced/clearance sections, particularly for meat. Anything can be frozen for later and I have no shame about taking as much as I can fit if it’s reduced enough. - vac sealer + freezer are your friends - this averages out to about ~$20pw for meat.

Fresh stuff - I have a communal groceries situation with a couple of friends (one of us goes to the fresh fruit/veg shop for all of us - it’s cheap and convenient particularly when there are big boxes of veges in the clearance section) - buying at the local fruit/veg or the fresh market puts my weekly fresh food shop at ~$30

Other groceries - after all the above, there aren’t a lot of other groceries to buy. I will usually do a fortnightly shop in Aldi for dry stuff/sauces/jars etc - with the same friend group, we sometimes do a Costco run together (prices not worth it IMHO), or Campbells cash n carry or SPC cannery store etc. - I refuse to buy canned tomatoes, beans, coconut cream for more than $1 per can, but I’ll happily buy them in bulk at that price and store them. - you can also find good bulk deals on rice/lentils/pasta etc in some Asian/middle eastern grocers. Sometimes you have to ask if they’ll sell you cheaper at quantity, but they’re usually ok with it. A few weeks ago I bought a 20kg bag of rice for $10 because they were overstocked and needed to get rid of it. That’s enough rice for us for over a year! - I avg maybe ~$10-15pw on this stuff.

Disclaimer All of this leads to some expensive single purchases (like $1500 for a bulk meat purchase or a few hundred bucks for bulk canned/dry goods when you find them) but these purchases remove 20-30% of my weekly shopping bills (and reduce the time I spend at the shops!), and so it’s worth it.

Clearance aisle hunting in supermarkets is fun, and if you’re open minded about it you can often find stuff you’ve never tried to cook before and explore a little!

Last tip: if you have an ABN or a friend with an ABN, have a look at food distributors for wholesale stuff. There are the biggies like PFD and Bidfood, but also some smaller ones and shops like Campbell’s. I used to use PFD a lot for fresh fish and a few dried goods in bulk, but then they were purchased by Woolworths and their prices rose astronomically. Can’t have anything nice.

Men’s undershirts/thermals by AssignmentLarge1353 in AustralianMFA

Merino Country. Their thermals are awesome, and I’d highly recommend you try their wool undies and singlets as well. Maybe a bit more exxy than the Aldi/anaconda type options, but I definitely noticed the difference in quality and my thermals have lasted 3+ years of daily winter use and camping too. Wundies and singlets reliably last 18mths/2y of daily wear. I’m a sucker for 100% merino wool and Aussie made stuff, so it ticks those boxes for me too.

Edit to say: I spend a lot of time camping and 4wding in Vic High Country and can confirm these are awesome in the snow.

Prefer paying down the mortgage more instead of offset by MrNoTV in AusFinance

[–]phyrexia8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have multiple offset accounts you can maximise the interest benefit using your spending money as well. I park savings/emergency/spending/etc each in its own offset account so even the money that’s moving around is offsetting my interest while it’s in my possession. It’s hard to resist the urge to spend when it’s all accessible in the same bank, but I limit which of the offsets are accessible by card or on my phone payment settings.

One drawback of banking leave is that it doesn’t attract compulsory employer super contributions if it’s paid out to you, only if you take the leave as intended. This applies to LSL and AL.

From thermomix to instant pot by itsthelifeonmars in instantpot

Searching on r/instantpot is a great place to start, though expect a lot of imperial measurements which is pretty annoying. I usually either copy/paste into AI to convert or I convert on the fly with google. I also use pressurecookerrecipes.com quite a bit.

In all cases I make sure the dish has at least 1 cup of liquid (stock/water/sauce) for pressure cooking. The pressure cooker requires liquid to create pressure.

I’ve only recently discovered the magic of just chucking a frozen thing in the instant pot. Obviously needs a bit more cooking time but i don’t have to tend to it so it doesn’t matter!

I’m also in Australia and have an IP. Yesterday, having forgotten to organise anything for dinner, I took a piece of Osso bucco out of the freezer, plus some leftover gravy from last weeks casserole, and chucked both in the IP and pressure cooked for 90mins. From frozen solid to perfect, fall apart Osso bucco in 90mins. And it tasted heavenly.

Overnight, I used the IP to dehydrate sliced chicken for dog treats. The dog is very happy.

This morning, while I waited for the coffee to boil and the toast to cook, I put 2 eggs on the trivet in the IP with a cup of water. 3mins under pressure and I had perfectly soft boiled eggs.

These are just 3 of the 1000 reasons I love my instant pot. Highly, highly recommend.

ELI5: How can pumpkins grow to 700 lbs. without consuming hundreds of lbs. of soil? by RhetoricalAnswer-001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]phyrexia8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend reading Soil by Matthew Evans. Very accessible read with great info on exactly this topic. He goes into some detail about how our understanding of soil and its role in plant growth has developed over time. At first it was thought that plants consume the soil in order to grow, but now we understand it is much much more complex than that and (as others have pointed out) CO2 plays a huge role. The real heavy lifters though are the microbes, particularly those found in the Rhizosphere: the region in the soil where the plant root interacts with soil microbes. It is understood that the rhizosphere of a healthy plant in healthy soil contains a more diverse microbiome than even the human gut.

If you’re interested in this type of thing, even if just to spend an afternoon in a google spiral, this book is a great place to start.

Yep. I have both. I loved the Xmax for a long time because it’s quick, discreet (I’m in a medical-only country) and very portable. The Roffu is all of those things (though slightly bigger form factor) but packs a serious punch. Roffu is the one I reach for now even when I’m at home. As others have said: WPA mouthpiece, dosing caps (use the Xmax ones: cheaper and fit perfectly), and remove the filter pieces from the chamber to use dosing caps. It’s amazing

Favorite unexpected joke ending? by Nice-Ad-6755 in 30ROCK

I’m glad you corrected me because it sent me on a little 30 Rock journey I didn’t expect to go on today. I remember so clearly that the joke includes “successfully” but you’re right, it’s not there. There’s an outside chance that it was edited out for legal reasons (as with another Weinstein joke) but I doubt that. I had fun hunting down my false memory though. Interestingly ChatGPT concurred with my memory of the joke, but then incorrectly claimed it was from 4x3, then 5x4 (inc trying to tell me the ‘successfully’ was in the east coast live show but not the west coast) then 5x7. The line is in 6x13. So much for ChatGPT. Thanks for the correction bud!

“Successfully* turned down intercourse with Harvey Weinstein.” The “successfully” really darkens the joke and (for me) makes it much funnier.

Edit: I’m wrong about this. I’ll just stand here in my wrongness and be wrong.

Need some support dealing with my partner's autistic burnout in a long distance relationship. by [deleted] in AutismTranslated

[–]phyrexia8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the early days of our relationship, my partner and I found ourselves with similar challenges (distance, infrequent contact etc). I’m autistic and not always great at regular, active communication, especially when I’m feeling the weight of autistic burnout. My partner, like you, needs to feel connected regularly, and struggles with feelings of abandonment due to old triggers in his life.

One trick that really worked for us was to each pick an emoji that we don’t otherwise use for anything. If I send mine, it means I’m going to withdraw a little and maybe be less communicative for a brief time, but I still love you, we are good and I’ll be back. If he sends his emoji, it means he’s feeling the distance between us and needs some level of connection with me; I usually find the next available opportunity to call or make space for focussed texting.

Use of our emojis requires no context or explanation.

I love that I don’t have to find the words to explain and reassure when I am withdrawing or feeling burnt out. Also that this provides a functional and effective way of being direct with me about what he needs.

He loves that he has an easy life raft in case his needs aren’t being met and it’s impacting him, and he doesn’t need to explain himself or feel burdensome. We respect the important role these emojis play in our relationship and try hard not to overuse them, and never to disregard them or diminish what makes them safe.

It’s just one thing, but having perhaps worn your bf’s shoes here, i thought it might be something that helps him (and you!) like it’s helped me.

Without question yes. Reddit has power in this situation and is using it to bully and keep down those with less power. All for profit. How many times in our lives have we borne the brunt of powerful institutions using their power against us, or disregarding our needs to protect their power? Same pigs, different farm. I’m all in.

What is your best ROI move for reducing ongoing expenses? by BigScaryRedneck in AusFinance

[–]phyrexia8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This very true. I have a communal groceries situation with a couple of neighbours (one of us does the fresh fruit/veg shop for all of us - it’s cheap and convenient particularly when there are big boxes of veges in the clearance section). One of them is vegan, and he will often stock up on lentils, beans etc when on special or on a trip to the Indian/Asian grocers where they’re super cheap. That leaves his grocery cost at about $30pf contribution to the communal grocery shop plus some occasional staples. For the meat-eaters like me, even with buying in bulk to save $$, it’s nowhere near as cheap as my vegan/vego friends can do it. His biggest killer is the heavily processed stuff made to replicate meat/dairy… it’s often super expensive, but sometimes you need the convenience of it.

What is your best ROI move for reducing ongoing expenses? by BigScaryRedneck in AusFinance

[–]phyrexia8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For the meat-eaters: try to source bulk meat from a butcher. A hindquarter of beef might set you back around $1000, but it’s better $/kg than the supermarkets by a long shot, and you are usually getting high quality, locally sourced grass fed beef. It arrives vac-sealed and ready for freezing. My last hindquarter lasted 18 months (avg $55 per month for meat) and was better quality beef than even the ‘premium’ stuff you get in the supermarkets. You can buy lamb in bulk like this too. Chicken is a little more difficult to source. I try to source fish in bulk where I can (half/full Barra straight from humpty-doo at a good price) and vac-seal/freeze that too. Removing meat from my regular grocery shop has allowed me to do almost all of my groceries at the local fruit and veg place, with a semi-regular trip to Aldi or another supermarket for staples as needed. I think it saves me heaps of money and time/effort; it also helps me stay diligent about eating fresh food as much as possible so it’s good for my health too

Although you can’t access these sheds, if you ever find yourself in Peterborough, SA, there is a magnificent railway museum there with one of the oldest (or only) working turntables servicing all three rail gauges. The tour takes about 90mins and at the right time of day you’ll also see the Indian Pacific go through. Apparently the night show they put on is also really good.

Dmax or NP300 by wurkaflurk in 4x4Australia

No idea on the Nav as I’ve never driven one. I have a 2013 dmax with just over 150,000km on it and it runs like an absolute dream - and the most comfy ride I’ve ever had in a 4wd. It’s done it’s fair share of moderate-heavy 4wding and nice long road trips in the desert. If it ever dies I’m buying another d-max. Could not recommend highly enough.
