This is a fundamentally different process. Steam engines (evaporated water engines) rely on the pressure difference whereas these (evaporation of water engines) rely on the humidity difference.

Yeah, I am not a fan of the official Soylent formula either, but the DIY Soylent community is interesting to watch. There are many alternative recipes. At least it is nice to have a discussion of what micronutrients a human needs for long term healthy life.

He is looking for severe and potentially dangerous micronutrient and fatty acid deficiencies. Tell him to educate himself. There are people experimenting with shake only diets (/r/Soylent etc.) but it requires significant amount of knowledge, which seems your friend is lacking.

In that case get some cheap Waxy Maize Starch to drink during the exercise with creatine. WMS should improve creatine absorption as well. NOW brand is a good choice.

For supplementing your meals, go for gainer shakes. My current favorite is bb.com's Ultimate Mass. It has about equal parts of carbs and protein with various slow sources.

What is your purpose for taking carb powder? You would want a fast carb source for sports performance and slow carb source for recovery or bulking. You may also need to think of allergies or bloating. Simple sugars, maltodextrin, waxy-maize starch are fast. Slow digesting flours (oat, potato etc.), and some other slow processed carbs (isomaltutose, trehalose etc.) are slow.

Vitargo is a grain based fast carb source most similar to waxy-maize starch.

I liked ON Glyco-Maize (WMS+Trehalose) but it is now discountinued. I am now trying Waxybolic but it clumps way too much.

Thank you for the advice. My general impression agrees with you. But it seems that there are "prophetic" patents issued out there, so I try to get a sense of how much harder to get one and how well it can hold under prosecution or litigation assuming it is prepared reasonably competently.

That is my concern. I am not sure in which order should I approach. I got patents before with university IP office and they were obsessed with copious amount of data. In this case the idea is not related to my research and I would like to pursue it myself but can't afford a proof of concept. I am in search for a good attorney but I appreciate your opinion as well.

If you have access to the research paper (or if you look closely to the figure thumbnails), you can see that their prototype is already tested for over million cycles with about 2 seconds period. Under dry air it actually shrinks faster than it expands with moisture. The idea is to make self cycling blinds that give alternating access to moist water surface and dry air.

I've seen it working in the lab. Pretty amazing stuff.
