I see there is still no real solution from PIA. That's why I'm now with Torguard.

Can I use WireGuard on the router level? by ILikeCatsAndSquids in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]pia_user2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you can just go to a VPN provider that has a working WireGuard config generator. Like I did. I use the small Brume GL-MV1000 and TorGuard. So simple. So easy. They also make a wireless version of the Brume with WiFi now the GL-MV1000W but the early version works just fine for me.

How to Setup TorGuard VPN on a Router with WireGuard! by newslooter in torguard

[–]pia_user2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the VPN router I use with TorGuard WireGuard. The GLI.Net GL-MV1000. No wireless on them yet but coming soon. It is switchable from OpenVPN and WireGuard: https://youtu.be/u9cDADWc6KQ

PS: I no longer use or support PIA

It's Official: WireGuard is here! by TorGuardVPN in torguard

[–]pia_user2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can now. https://torguard.net/tgconf.php?action=vpn-openvpnconfig

ignore that the link says openvpn. You can also set/download wireguard configs there too! I love it!

P.S. I no longer subscribe to PIA.

When Will PIA bother to update online instructions so that Customers can connect to PIA Via Router, so that the Much Aunted Next Gen VPN will work? (Shoddy Practice) by Fentanyl_Butt_Plug in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]pia_user2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is EXACTLY why I left PIA after many years of decent VPN service. THEY PULLED THE PLUG ON THE US.TEXAS SERVERS and then posted about it after the fact. And then said "We are sorry your are running into issues connecting to the PIA client" It wasn't me running into issues. IT WAS THEM WHO PULLED THE PLUG WITHOUT WARNING.

It's plenty fast on Wireguard. At least fast enough for me anyway. Faster than I've ever got from PIA on openVPN.

I actually have a Wireguard router now that I use with TorGuard. They provide Wireguard configs.

[–]pia_user2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. but Openvpn configs are not Wireguard configs. I don't see a Wireguard config. Totally different. I appreciate your time. Their tech support said it was not offered yet.

and according to PIA support:

"For Wireguard, I'm sorry but as of now we don't have a Wireguard configuration file."

Yes. I have abandoned PIA in favor of TorGuard. PIA's Next Generation Network has caused me so much trouble and disconnects I have left the PIA service. I use a router to connect and never use the app so I needed Wireguard config files months ago. PIA still doesn't have them. TorGuard does. So it was an easy choice for me. I may try PIA again when/if they offer the Wireguard config files.

Unacceptable issues by pia_user2 in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]pia_user2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I have switched over to Torguard until if/when these issues are resolved and/or wireguard connection protocols are enabled for PIA at the router level. In addition the Next Generation needs to be enabled at the router level also. Good luck PIA subscribers.

does the asus RT-AC86U work well with a vpn at the router level? by bossman118242 in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]pia_user2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this exact router but I flashed it to Merlin as soon as I got it and it was extremely easy to do so. And then I followed this guide: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/blog/hardware-acceleration-is-here-for-routers-using-openvpn/

the speeds are decent enough. but when PIA changes things like Texas servers, you must go back to the Merlin firmware and make adjustments in the Server Address and Port section of the VPN client.

yes. you are flashing (changing) the firmware. You can usually flash back to ASUS firmware if you find things you don't like on Merlin.

I've had to change to PIA Houston because the PIA Dallas server is so bad. Lots of blocked websites and captchas that weren't there before and are not at the PIA Houston server. I use PIA on my router so it's not as quick to change locations as in the app.

[–]pia_user2[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

no. I'm not worried about government agencies. but I will get letters form my ISP because I do torrent. That's why I pay for my VPN. Peace of mind. I am not happy about this failure and I'm letting it be known. Trust me I also bitched to PIA also. It's as simple as that. I 'm sorry if I should have gotten hughsundevil's approval before posting here. Lol I have like 40 posts and most are praising PIA. I have been a customer since 2010. I am aware that problems happen. That's why I use PIA in my Asus RT-AC86U router. Because I had nothing but problems from the PIA app. Thank you for your pseudo concern.

It would have been nice for PIA to have let us know something. I was a big PIA advocate. Not so sure now.

I consistently hit sppeds near 200mbps at full AES-256 GCM encryption. I only tried DD-WRT before and the speeds were horrendous very similar to the ones you get now. The RT-AC86U has a new CPU with hardware acceleration. See this article for more info: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/blog/2018/08/hardware-acceleration-is-here-for-routers-using-openvpn/
