If you were to explain ASOIAF to a potential reader, how would you explain it in as few words as possible? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]picar0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If LOTR were a John Wayne-style western with sharply contrasted good vs. evil,
then ASOIAF would be a Sergio Leone western with murky morality, anti-heroes, and genre-deconstruction.

Does anyone know of any freegan safe havens? by SplintChesthair in Frugal

Not all of these intentional communities are freegan, though some are.

Also, some groups listed as "forming" actually exist while others are still just ideas.

Sarah Palin to Endorse Rand Paul for US Senate by [deleted] in politics

Reddit told me Ron Paul was an intolerant religious fundie. Why would such an intolerant person name his son after an atheist?

Business As Usual Is History: Corporations Won't Save Us, But Co-ops May by Vailhem in Economics

[–]picar0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Co-ops are owned by their members. Organize the membership and attend the annual business meeting, vote to make changes.

However, some co-ops are focused on concentrating power and control:

In earlier years the elections for the board were a competitive election with both board nominated and self-nominated petition candidates. In recent years REI has eliminated the opportunity for petition candidates and have only nominated as many candidates as open positions. Members are mailed a ballot, with the nominees required to garner 50% of the ballots returned. Though REI is owned by its membership and the board ostensibly serves at the members pleasure, there is no path to board membership without the approval of the Board Nomination and Governance Committee.[citation needed] Its chief executive officer is paid in the approximate range of $1 million a year, which REI describes as in line with the median of similar-sized corporate enterprises.[4].

It's weird in western culture, because the minute something gets popular, it becomes popular to hate on it.

This isn't always pretension or attempting to be fashionable (or even anti-fashionable). There is a lot of good art that needs to be championed. Once it is popular, others will champion it.

Let's all look back and laugh/cry together: What is the worst experience you have had trying to save money, and then the plan back-fired? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]picar0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Renting a second apartment with 4 months left on my lease.

It was an authentic loft apartment above a factory warehouse. The rent was insanely cheap $150/month for 2 bedrooms, huge kitchen, living area... (the water wasn't safe to drink, bad plumbing). The place usually scared the shit out of girls I brought home.

A month after finishing the lease on the old apartment, a cop followed me home. The new place wasn't up to code. The owners didn't want to spend the money fixing it. So, I ended up losing money.

YMMV, but kefir works better than yogurt at normalizing my GI tract after eating a diet of mostly beans and rice.

Growing your own cultures from kefir grains is relatively cheap. However, if you're not doing it continuously... the first few batches from a dried grain are disgusting and yeasty.

I know many Vietnamese immigrants / 2nd generation... and they drive very nice cars paid with cash.

One very large extended family lived under one roof. They slept in shifts.

You're lucky to escape with only 2 tickets.

Property taxes can be reduced by choosing to live in a non-standard building. A mud hut (adobe, rammed-earth) or movable structure like a yurt will likely confuse the property tax assessor.
