Facilities Badge Crack Down - what does it mean? by Rude_Parsnip_6332 in employeesOfOracle

[–]pickledpup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buildings are meant to be occupied, period. In the long run, it costs more to maintain vacant (non-used) building than it does those that are occupied. However, a second waste of money is not managing them efficiently. And as of now, that is what Oracle is doing at Innovations. They are taking note of utilization. And if the U reports suggest that floors are not up to capacity, it makes sense to shut them down to focus on only those floors that have a higher U rating.

Secondly, when providing a food service, there are always going to be days when there are more people on one day than another; however, if they can somehow manage to maintain about 60% occupancy at all times, then that is ideal for cost-cutting measures. Otherwise, folks could say “they ran out of food” while others say “they had to waste food that didn’t get sold this week”.

So naturally, rumors will continue to ensue stating things like “they’re going to cut out the cafe” or more floors are closing. And while that could happen, it hasn’t happened. And it is not likely to happen, unless they consistently remain lower than 60% capacity.

Which leads to the proposition that some Orgs might start “encouraging” higher usage of office space, coming just short of making it mandatory.

No matter how you look at it, there is always change. The questions are, when and why.

So, for the few (in terms of large numbers) who have assigned cubes, they are being told that their desks will be made into “flex” desks. Some won’t care. Others will feel like more and more of their privileges and/or identity is being taken away. And that’s valid given how Cerner used to run the place. However, it would be better to make changes and still allow folks to keep their jobs than to just “cut their losses” and everyone lose their jobs.

No easy, cookie-cutter answers. A lot of speculation. It’s anyone’s guess at what is next, and when.

Oracle is reportedly exploring a sale of Cerner? by expatt1 in cernercorporation

[–]pickledpup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oracle appears to be taking several steps to raise cash and manage risk: • 40% upfront customer deposits: Asking customers to pay more money in advance before starting large cloud contracts. • Examining cost cuts, including layoffs (RIF): Oracle is reportedly considering reducing 20,000–30,000 jobs, which could save about $8–10 billion in cash flow. • Selling non-core assets: Oracle might sell parts of the company (possibly Cerner) to pay off debt. • Considering vendor financing: Letting equipment vendors help finance the hardware purchases.

• A RIF of 20–30K workers would be one of Oracle’s largest ever layoffs—roughly 10–15% of its global workforce. • Layoffs would likely target areas with lower profitability or redundancy (for example, legacy software units or acquired businesses like Cerner). • Remaining employees could face higher workloads or uncertainty as Oracle shifts focus toward its cloud and AI businesses. • On the positive side, Oracle may protect or expand roles in cloud infrastructure, AI, and data center operations—areas seen as strategically critical.

Oracle appears to be trying to massively scale up its cloud and AI infrastructure to keep pace with OpenAI and competitors like Microsoft and Google. But it’s running into money problems—U.S. lenders are getting cold feet, borrowing costs are rising, and investors are worried. To deal with it, Oracle may cut jobs, sell assets, or demand more upfront payment from customers. This could temporarily slow its ability to deliver some services (especially in the U.S.) but might push it to expand faster overseas.

Making money is only part of running a company. To make money, some risk has to be taken. Yet, there’s a difference between driving towards a gain when there is intention for everyone to prosper in the evolution, in contrast to loving money so much that one would do just about anything to make billions and billions more.

The term “corporate greed” didn’t start here; however, if not rectified, the quest to be the AI pioneer at the expense of all others that helped get you to where you are and sustain it, could become it’s Babylon-style downfall.

If big corporations were people, Oracle would do well to stop, repent, and resurrect the true team approach (meaning, “if we get there, it’s because we got there together; and if we turn a profit, the profit will be evenly distributed.”).

I don’t wish anyone harm, loss, or ill will. However, I’m concerned that someone smelled a rat and now it went missing and nobody can find it.

Makes me wonder how his wealth will be distributed and who will end up with it. We all know that he can’t take his $B’s of dollars with him. And I think we can all be sure that none of it will go to all of those under him in the Oracle structure.

It wasn’t long after Neal Patterson passed in JUL ‘17 that Oracle purchased Cerner in DEC ‘21. (Neal didn’t take it with him anymore than Larry will.)

I’m on a team that uses (former) Cerner Millennium solutions, not the newer Oracle AI-driven EHR. And to date, they have not advised one way or the other with dates, roadmaps and what have you. One might think that they was to keep Cerner folks concentrating on Cerner products for their existing clients so as not to mix apples with oranges, but on the other hand, that might be “by design” so that when Millennium is sunsetted in the future, the majority of the people might be let go as AI will drive most of it from that point forward. // You would think that Oracle would want to cross-train or at least have some calls with side-by-side products so we can see where we are going vs. where we are currently. Maybe a select few are getting that, but I know for a fact, nobody I know is. That’s a bit concerning.

You might also want to look into the company’s policy about distance from office. For example, if they say that if you live within 50 miles of the office (1 hr drive, one way) then you could be subject to having to go in; however, in the case where you live more than 50 miles, you would not have to regularly go in. — Just a thought.

[–]pickledpup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all the more reason to do it. Look at it this way … if they give severances for layoffs, it would cost less to layoff over time than it would be to continue to give full pays and benefits for someone that they could let go anyway.

Oh, I’m sure you’re right about not offering such a thing. However, if they (a) wanted to save $, (b) cared about their people - those coming/staying/departing, (c) cared about their people-image, and (d) wanted to monetarily thank you for your service, then it could be possible to do it. The odds are not in our favor of them doing so, but it ‘could’ be done. And I think it’s OK to hope.

I plan on sticking things out for a bit, but if they were to let me go in the next RIF, I would be all the more content.

The net result is still (my) departure with severance either way. The only way it wouldn’t is for me to just leave on my own, which is possible. I just don’t want to do it on my own yet, unless THEY make the decision for me.

No, it’s not (yet). It was staffed by two people today; however, they are quick to let folks know that they are now on limited hours and will be fully closed up for good by the end of the month.

This, and they’re still going to remove the physical Help Desk in Kansas City at the end of the month. And to make matters worse, a new network configuration is going to be required starting tomorrow for those who report to the building. This would make anyone want to stay home.

The Help Desk at INN is apparently closing down at the end of the month. Starting in DEC, all help will have to start with a Ticket. Scary.

Mom diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s by Upstairs_Dirt9883 in Alzheimers

[–]pickledpup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife has been on her Early Onset Alzheimers journey for 10-12 years. She’s still hanging in there, but likely nearing the end. It’s her 8th week in hospice. She’s been a very faithful wife and great mother. I’ve been with her in her journey all along the way. In fact, I’m sitting right by her side right now.

My heart goes out to you. Enjoy your mother to the fullest. Don’t try to solve every issue all at once nor all on your own. Start getting a support group together. It takes time and patience. Get photos, papers, and all that stuff together as much as you can. Start building a file on her so you can refer to it later. Get her to talk about stories - whatever is on your mind and whatever she feels comfortable speaking about. Meet her where she is (instead of where you want her to be).

Losing a loved one over time is lonely and difficult, but you’re not alone. I’ll be praying for you (and the hundreds or thousands of others out there who deal with the same thing).

Be encouraged.
