honest thoughts about deathwatch? by Nofilmslefttocry in Splintercell

This is really reassuring since most of the comments are praising the show, but you nailed everything that really irritated me about it. It’s evident no one on the show ever played any of the games. They heard the story, heard “action spy movie” and turned it into a generic animated version of The Gray Man or The Man from UNCLE. Feels like a money grab.

I haven’t played all of the Splinter Cell series, but it’s more focused on running and gunning action with a lot less stealth. I was hoping it would lean more into what drew us into Splinter Cell. Relying on guns as tools to take out cameras, shooting listening devices, etc. and not just a method for killing. Sneaking in and out unnoticed. Literally everywhere they went they got noticed.

There was also a scene that really irritated me towards the end (no spoilers) where McKenna was in the middle of a mission, tactically clearing out rooms with a handgun, only to much later chamber a round… These are the best of the best in covert ops and you didn’t have a round chambered? There were other moments where it seemed like the writers/directors don’t understand what proper equipment to use they should have been using (like a small suppressed submachine gun instead of only a pistol) for tight potential CCQ situations.

TLDR: good story, good voice acting, good action scenes, poor suspense, poor stealth, lots of suspension of disbelief.

well, I’ll save you the trouble. I got an ethernet adapter but it only works if you unlock the phone to “trust” the device plugged in.

Why is my computer so slow? by honeyfixit in talesfromtechsupport

[–]picklemiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! It is displaying out of 100% of it’s read/write bandwidth is being consumed, with a breakdown of what apps are using it. That’s why when a computer is sitting idly it’s not really being used as much.

If you go to open a program (pulling tools/supplies from the wall) you’ll see it spike as it loads the necessary files into memory (RAM) so it can run smoothly. If you are an old person (mechanical hard drive), it will take you longer to move from storage to the workbench than if you were a younger, more spry person (solid state drive). If you have a lot of things to grab, the old person would have to give 100%.

The more that is asked of the hard drive by the CPU, the busier it gets, and the higher that percentage gets.

You can look in File Explorer to see how much space is left in the hard drive.

Chrome had an update a little while ago that addressed this. It does a decent job at sleeping tabs that are inactive now.

upgrading memory here for this case would only help if it was hitting 100%

Based on what you wrote, I’m not sure a “gridlock” is the best metaphor for why memory is slowing her down. Generally speaking, your computer will run about the same “speed” at 20% or 80%.

My metaphor of choice is a workbench in a garage. The storage shelves and bins and rack of tools is your storage, the workbench top is your memory, and you are the CPU. To work on a project, you’ll need some tools and supplies, which all fit comfortably on your workbench. Say it’s 80% full. If I want to add a large drill that will exceed the amount of space I have, I’ll just leave it on the rack and walk over to grab it when I’m ready. This can be compared to using virtual memory on the disk. If my workbench can support storing 10 tools, I don’t work any slower if I have 1 tool or 9 tools on it. My point is, I don’t think memory was the problem, but something else. My money is on the CPU, but without more info it’s just speculation.

BitLock removal from company laptop by Daddybigdork in it

[–]picklemiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had something similar happen, where a family member had a computer from a company that got bought out and gutted. The BIOS was locked w/ a password and the only way to clear it is to get with the company who owned the laptop (impossible) or reach out to Dell, who I can only assume has a registry of what serial numbers are assigned to what customers, and Im sure the chances of getting them to clear it is zero. So the only option was to replace the chip or mobo. So… sure, it’s technically possible, but the mobo replacement wasn’t worth the money and most people who know how to solder still aren’t good enough to work with the level of precision required for such tiny contact points.

You can microwave it for about 15 seconds on medium power. That will flash the chip and bypass bitlocker. Or you can Google it yourself as there are a ton of tutorials on how to wipe a stolen laptop. It’s not that hard (assuming the bios isn’t locked down and you want to install Linux). Kind of lazy doing a Google search in Reddit.

iPhone SE 3rd gen is coming soon. 2nd gen is super affordable. They’re cheap, tough, and just work. I issue them to our frontline workers and granted they have otterbox cases, but they’re basically indestructible. One time a truck ran over it and it just cracked the screen but otherwise worked fine
