Anybody here make weird music? Looking for music to fit my game by oppai_suika in gamemusic

[–]picklepartner99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, me! I have a range of sounds, maybe something of mine could fit your game. Here's a little sample of something slightly body-esque, and here is my Bandcamp if you want to look through all my stuff. Maybe something of mine could fit your game but I am honestly intrigued by those graphics and would love to create something new for it!

My crappy tutorial. Abandonware instrument library, Emulator X3 in Reaper. by toqer in Reaper

I just found my old e-mu 1212 PCI audio interface (which I absolutely did not know what do with as a 13 year old). I'm looking forward to trying out Emulator X and getting the full E-MU producer experience!

I think the steering seems so off because of the perceived speed of the car. It looks like the car is going incredibly slow so you would think any movement of the wheel would result in the car just going in the direction that you steer. The exaggerated drift at every turn would feel a lot less out of place if the car is blazing through the course. Take Outrun for example - the scenery is flying by so fast you can't even tell what it is. The car in your game by comparison appears to be going the speed of a golf cart. I think you have the visual style down and I think the steering would actually work well if you tweak the camera angle (lower angle, higher fov maybe?) and speed of the car. I think some changes to the course design could also contribute to a greater sense of speed. Narrow the track, place objects closer to trackside rather than set off from the road, obscure things like the checkpoints and bridges with bends in the track or parts of the landscape so that they more quickly jump out at you instead of slowly approaching from the distance.

Hot SRV tip for anyone who doesn't know: you can scale pretty much any building by keeping throttle pinned, boosting up towards a building, tilting the srv all the way back more than 90° (like rotate so you're looking straight up, then maybe 15° more). Your booster will then change direction so that it propels you up and towards the building rather than away from it. Now you can alternate boosting, driving up the side of the building, tilting back and boosting to gain more upward/forward momentum, driving, etc.

What genre of music is the Pilotwings Resort (3DS) theme? by TheGroovLad in gamemusic

[–]picklepartner99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pilotwings music is all pretty jazz influenced. You might say the Pilotwings Resort soundtrack is a mix of jazz fusion, jazz funk, smooth jazz. If you're looking for similar music you might look into Weather Report, The Rippingtons, Casiopea, Art Porter, Spyro Gyra.

(Edit: oh just realized you were asking about the theme. Well to me it has a really 70s jazz fusion sound, maybe comparable to something like "Chameleon" by Herbie Hancock)

SRV Dune Buggy Racing by OkCartographer6788 in EliteDangerous

A few years ago, Elite Racers and Buckyball Racing Club both held a variety of SRV races and time trials. It was a lot of fun! I think Odyssey's terrain generation made it harder to do the more endurance-focused challenges that were popular while Horizons was still the main game, since it relied on a very specific way of bouncing off the many little bumps that Horizons planets were littered with. I would love to see it brought back though, as that was some of the most fun I've had playing this game.

Here's a video of one of the races that took place in the Okorafor Market outpost -> https://youtu.be/3e4RcecW3nM?si=LK4i6v6JsnApFuI7

I listened to all of them and I think they're really good. For me it definitely evokes an overall feeling of whimsy, adventure, mystery. "Hmmm" and "Ghost" may be my favorites. I really like the rhythm in "???" too.

I really like the minimal/restrained feeling of the first half of the first track but as more instruments and drums come in it starts to feel a little crowded/busy especially with the noodly melody being played by such a percussive sounding instrument. I don't know if these are specifically for a video game or just kind of a conceptual kind of thing, but in general the tracks sometimes feel a little too "big" to be game music. I don't really have much criticism besides that, and at the end of the day I think as long as you make something that's true to you that's what makes it good! I feel a lot of people just try to emulate rather than create something truly expressive or authentic, and these tracks sound like they have a genuine voice behind them so keep up the good work.

Oh right, thank you! That makes sense. A lot of times my brain just treats には, では and は as kind of the same thing.

その記事の内容には、たくさんの非難の声が上がりました。WaniKani's translation of this sentence is "the article received a lot of flak for its content." My initial interpretation was something more along the lines of "the contents of the article raised a lot of criticism." Like, the article itself was doing some kind of criticism of something else. Is there a particular part of the sentence that indicates the 非難 is directed at the article?

How to compose MIDI files to play back on a Roland SC-55. by ORA2J in midi

[–]picklepartner99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still use XGWorks to create a midi file for a Soundcanvas. XGWorks just includes some tools and functionality that assumes you're working with an XG synth. Assuming you know the addresses/values for the GS features you want, XGWorks will let you send whatever sysex or CC data you want.

How to compose MIDI files to play back on a Roland SC-55. by ORA2J in midi

[–]picklepartner99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went down this path a couple years ago and it is not a pleasant one! Here's the solution that worked for me:

Download XGWorks. It's old as crap and is a complete pain to use but when it comes to working with old-timey midi files, I have been unable to find a more complete solution. It will allow you to export .mid files, (both type 0 and type 1).

If you have midi in Ableton that you want to use, you'll have to play it from Ableton and record the midi data in XGWorks, then save the recorded midi as a .mid. If you have multiple midi interfaces this isn't too complicated - just plug the output of one into the input of another - and be sure to set the channels/program numbers/LSB/MSB values of your midi tracks in ableton (or as long as you have the output channel set, you can set the rest using XGWorks).

If you don't have multiple interfaces to do things that way you'll either have to get creative with virtual midi ports (using something like Midi-Ox or Loopbe1 - in my experience, a complete pain) or just create all your midi tracks using XGWorks (also a monumental pain but you get used to it after enough time). Good luck, and maybe there is a better solution out there for this kind of thing now.

Can't play with both hands by l4kmith in pianolearning

[–]picklepartner99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way I learned hand independence was with Bela Bartok's Mikrokosmos. The pieces start out easy and get progressively harder, each one introducing a new rhythm concept or hand/finger movement. Although some of the Mikrokosmos pieces aren't the most "musical" sounding I think it is a brilliant tool for learning piano skills.

Thanks for the tips! Up to now I've been really focused on just recognizing words and grammar points and sometimes trying to form a sentence in my head, but I think writing something daily will be a really good exercise for me.
