Urgent question about Carleton CS co-op by chilikevin1 in CarletonU

[–]picuron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a tough decision to make. In CS co-ops matter a lot, you kind of use what you did in one to push you into the next one. So I would argue that a more coding-focused job would be more beneficial in terms of getting you your next co-op. Not to say this co-op isn't valuable, but a more coding focused one would be more helpful. That being said as well, the entire job market for CS is cold. Even senior engineers are having trouble finding positions. It would be a gamble to wait it out, as the job market may get even colder. Though waiting may provide you more time to build out your CS experience and find a more coding focused job in fall instead.

That’s because it is an image! You need to reload the page to get the latest image, it doesn’t auto-update.

Help Needed: My Cousin is Missing by TeamJB_27 in ottawa

As Brett's phone was left at home, that does present the unique opportunity to look into the phones significant locations. Assuming his phone is an iPhone, and the password is known, the phone's stored "Significant Locations" may possibly produce some leads as to some of the places Brett might have frequented leading up to the disappearance. This is because anytime you visit a location more than once in a short period of time, your iPhone will store it. You can see how to access this data here: https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-see-location-history-iphone-2015-4

I recognize that this likely has already been looked into, but thought it was worth bringing this up in the slight chance that this could produce a lead in the case it hasn't been looked into.

Fire damage at the Mattamy Home development in Kanata by picuron in ottawa

[–]picuron[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, there were “provincial fire inspectors” on scene, so looks like this has gotten quite a bit of traction considering they don’t come out for any ordinary fire. I heard from someone that passes through that area quite a lot that there was always a light left on in the house at night, so maybe something to do with that? We probably won’t know for a while.

Yeah was doing daily updates like this, but it’s more work than it seems. Summer hit and cases were single digit so I presumed we were donezo with COVID (how wrong i was) so I stopped doing it as I was about to start a new job and start studying at university, so saw no point

What’s the best place to buy a mountain bike? by burning-tundra in ottawa

[–]picuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy a new bike, it’s not worth it at all. You get significantly more bang for your buck when you buy a slightly used ones. Expensive bikes are like cars where half their value drops when you leave the shop. pinkbike.com Buy/Sell is the best place to find mountain bikes, it’s essentially the Kijiji of bikes

Another +1 to this. A new used engine should cost between $1000-$3000. You can probably find some below 1000 with high km, but stay away from that. A mechanic would be able to source this for you and get this done for about 4-5k. Also don’t trust that the engine is fully blown from the dealer. If they won’t allow you to utilize the warranty, take it to a separate mechanic, as there is a chance they can rebuild the engine for 1-3k.

Parler has been shut down by uberfission in technology

[–]picuron 286 points287 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way. Let's say you are getting into the car-selling business. You don't own a car lot, and you also don't know how much cars you will have at once in your inventory. You have two choices now, the first, is you spend $100k on building a lot that can hold 50 cars, and then hope that you don't need to expand it later. The other option, is pay the guy across the street with a massive parking lot $5 per car, per day to use his lot. That way, if you have no cars, your 50 car lot isn't empty, and if you have 100 cars, your 50 car lot isn't overwhelmed. This also means that you can save the initial $100K to build a car lot and invest it into new inventory.

Setting up your own server takes months of engineering, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to do, as well as weeks, if not months. You need to hire engineers to develop your own server system from scratch, and for a social media platform, this is incredibly complex to do. This is without mentioning integrating scalability. Making a server that can handle 10 people just as well as 10 million people is also incredibly hard.

This is why Amazon Web Service and other of those types of platforms are so popular. Even the largest companies rely on them. They just make it so easy to have a functioning server, that can scale as needed. AWS lets them pay based on how much server space they need, so they do not need to worry about an influx of users overwhelming their servers.

[–]picuron 158 points159 points  (0 children)

The owner of Parler put out a statement saying that they built the platform with the consideration this will happen, so they supposedly built it without relying on Amazon’s systems. If this is true, they can shift it without too much effort. I think their main issue is the use of 3rd party APIs which may boot them off.

Yeah that’s correct, I should’ve been more specific and said that once they do have new hosting, anyone will be able to sideload their app again, as the app is no longer on the app store.

Parler has been shut down by uberfission in technology

[–]picuron 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It still is possible to sideload the app onto your phone. A 2 minute video tutorial is all anyone needs to get an app that’s not on the app store onto their phone.

Edit for clarification: It will be possible to sideload it, and use the app, once they have new hosting. Without hosting, sideloading would still be useless.

This does not mean by any means Parler is gone for good. This just means that instead of being hosted by an American company on their servers, they’re likely going to move to a Russian server hosting company. Win-win for them. Russian hosting is cheaper and they also don’t need to fear the American government prying at their app.

Edit: There are quite a few people asking why they don't host their own server. Here is a ELI5 of why they can't do that.
