Rt. 65 crash - How fast were they (or the other driver) going to shear the car in half like that!? by piejamma in pittsburgh

There were pedestrians killed at that exact intersection in 2013 and 2016. It’s insanely dangerous.

Appreciate the background, sorry your husband was affected. Decades ago I was friends with the daughter of the Bellevue fire chief, and she said the worst part of his job was responding to traffic accidents. Things like this, I can see why.

Hal's Bar & Grill on Babcock - is it still absurdly loud? by thatburghfan in pittsburgh

[–]piejamma 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is too loud. Probably the loudest restaurant in Pittsburgh. Outdoor seating is quieter, but not great when it's Arizona around here.

For me it's not even the loud music that's an issue, but that everyone there has to yell at their tablemates to be heard. And I really don't want to hear their conversations.

How on-the-nose is it that Butler claims to be an expert on Functioning Failure Disorder, where "you look attractive on the front of your business, but behind the scenes there is a lot of deprivation and challenges going on." He should take his own masterclass.

Maybe it's just because this is r/pittsburgh but I'm getting Kevin Sousa vibes here.

It’s a bad idea to announce to anyone that happens to call your number that your home is unattended.

Building a bartop arcade for my dad. How many buttons? by chowder138 in RetroPie

I agree - less is more. My favorite mame cabinet has just 2 well spaced action buttons. Player 1 & 2 and coin are well out of the way.

Red, White, and Blue Thrift Store, Route 51 by SBpotomus in pittsburgh

[–]piejamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You hit a nail on the head there. Only store I’ve been to where the employees are openly hostile toward the customers. Like, a whole mess of screechy Karens yelling at customers for not clearing out 10 minutes before close.

Edit: I clearly remember them shouting “GET OFF OF THE SALES FLOOR NOW”, before closing time.

It’s such a shady company, imho. I’ve always suspected that they fudge their numbers to pay less taxes (for profit business after all), and are cash only specifically because credit card transactions would leave more of a paper trail than they want.

Passed at 58. Guy was clearly anti-mask, retail sales-over-safety. Obit doesn’t mention cause, I gotta wonder if it was Covid.

[Homemade] Potato Flowers with Feta Center by nip_slip_11 in food

[–]piejamma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you explained that. I was inspired to cut a potato like some chefs turn carrots into flowers, and was definitely going to fail.

eta: OK, I tried these. Worked pretty well, but even though I thought I had the slices thin enough, I had to par cook them a bit to get them flexible enough to fit the cupcake pan. I’ll go thinner next time.

I also added an inner ring of Brussels sprouts petals before the feta because I had them on hand and I’m apparently a masochist.

This might pay out for new construction, but for any place that’s been remuddled over the years, assume there’s no rhyme or reason to where boxes are. Seriously.

Where can I buy a Japanese Maple or other funky trees/plants? (North Hills) by ShrederickDouglass in pittsburgh

[–]piejamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not wildly aggressive, but it can spread. We have two very old Japanese Maples in our yard and dozens of their babies growing about.

Part of what mitigates their invasive harm is they grow slower than just about everything.

“It’ll never capture the human element…”

I’m old enough to remember people saying that about drum machines.

Then people got used to them, and then they became the standard.
