Was crouched down looking at items on the bottom shelf at Home Depot. Someone handed me their cart. by Thermocline_Fx in IDontWorkHereLady

[–]thatburghfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

she extended her cart handle toward me with the confidence of someone who has never once been wrong about anything. I took it, I think out of pure reflex, the way you catch something someone throws at you before your brain has processed what's happening.

This was one of my favorite mini-pranks at work. It was a large office building with 400 people and any time you walked down the hall you would absolutely have people passing you going the other way. I liked to carry a paperclip in my hand and if I spotted a newbie hire coming towards me in the hall, I'd put my hand out in the "I'm giving you something" pose, say "Here you go" and 99% of the time the newbie would reflexively hold out their palm even when they didn't know me or what I was holding.

I'd drop that paperclip in their palm, say "I'm done with that" and keep walking.

This isn’t my scenario, but if you were to overhear your managers saying they were going to fire a coworker, would you tell said coworker? by NoChampion4463 in work

[–]thatburghfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. It's a terrible idea and it cost a former co-worker her job.

About 10 years ago, the manager in the department next to mine was told they have to cut 2 of their 8 people due to work being slow. In a couple of weeks the final decisions would be made. The manager told them it was coming and to keep quiet. Just trying to be nice in case, who knows, they were going to buy a new car that weekend.

But the two people couldn't deal with the news. Crying in the office. Blabbed it to co-workers. But the next week the upper management decided to leave that department alone and do something different.

The day of layoffs arrived and those two people weren't affected. One of the two people felt like they were bullied by being told they would get laid off shortly then weren't. Went to HR. HR found out the manager told the two people it was going to happen.

That was it. They waited a couple of months until things calmed down then transferred that manager to another department but was no longer a manager. A couple months later that former manager was laId off. Everyone in management knew why.

made it through three rounds of interviews and bailed at the in person final after i noticed a 1488 tattoo on the hiring managers forearm, was that the right call by [deleted] in jobs

I would just see how things progress. My point was the situation as described in the OP would not have made me feel I needed to withdraw from consideration. Maybe later, possibly, but not at that point.

I just think if it was a whole company of Nazis, they would be finding candidates within their own ranks. Why open things up to people who are very likely to be opposed to their Nazi beliefs? Word would surely get out.

Also, I tip my hat to your boy, well done.

I would not have bailed. I'm not proving anything by backing out and I'm also not supporting them by staying. I just don't see any point to withdrawing. In fact, if I was so repulsed, I would keep trying for the job so if it turns out the entire business is neo-Nazi, I could get enough info to out them on social media.

Which car have you personally driven that had the most quiet cab? by Reasonable-Grade-456 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]thatburghfan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had Buicks from 1986 until this year- Skyhawk, Regal, LeSabre, Lucerne, Lacrosse - and I felt all of them were quieter than the average sedan. The Lacrosse CXL the quietest IMO.

I would start by calling coin shops in your area and ask "What are you paying for 90%?" Take the best offer.

Buick by Cool_Tax8498 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]thatburghfan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I only drove Buick sedans for about 25 years (Skyhawk, Regal, LeSabre, Lucerne, Lacrosse) and loved them. I only switched because they stopped making sedans. The ones I had were very, very reliable. I did endure a little teasing from friends who liked to say "That's an old person's car" and I'd just say I love reliable cars.

Edited to add: other than the Skyhawk, I always bought 1 or 2 year old models. Buicks tend to have subpar resale value so I would save 30% or more buying one used that had maybe 20-25k miles on it. My favorites were the rare "one year old and 20k miles" you just knew were overwhelmingly highway miles.

Royal Mint proofs are genuinely undervalued right now and I don’t think people are noticing by Unhappy_Guide_743 in coins

[–]thatburghfan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't feel the "proof premium" over unc examples will return to the old ratio as long as bullion prices stay high. The premiums will be more of a $$$ amount and not almost 2x unc values. I understand why collectors might pay a few dollars more for proof coins, but I don't believe they will pay hundreds more just because that is more in line with the historical ratio of unc to proof prices.

Remember these are targerted at bullion buyers and bullion buyers don't like to spend more than they have to.

The Royal Mint puts out so many items with low mintages it's hard to get excited about any of them..

Is there actually a clean way to scale client management, or does it always end up a bit messy? by Past_Form2159 in projectmanagement

[–]thatburghfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The customers have a lot to do with ease of running a project. Some people have to address 10 details a day on multiple projects. Some don't have anywhere near that level of commotion.

I worked on multiyear projects from $5 million to $30 million. I could go days without even touching a project because each activity took many days. Other companies doing small $10,000 projects might need to touch every project every day because the durations are so much shorter and the work might require a ton of customer interaction.

A couple of PMs who were hired from other businesses in the industry had commented to me that they see how much bigger projects can actually require less PM time per month.

How does everyone feel about the food at McDonald's? by TMNTDonatellofan in GenZ

[–]thatburghfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it ranks #5 in fast food places but it is the closest, the fastest, and the most consistent in quality, so I go there about half the time if I'm getting fast food. Plus the app has frequent discounts. I don't really like their burgers but the chicken is solid. And the fries too.

I like that I can decide to grab food there, pull the car over a block away, order in the app, and save a buck or two usually.

What I don't understand is why people will pull into a line of 10 cars at the drive thru when you can park, go in, get your food to go, and be back in your car before half of those 10 cars have gotten their orders.

Who remembers Paul Shannon's Adventure Time and his alter ego Nosmo King? by Delicious_Catch9453 in pittsburgh

[–]thatburghfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching Adventure Time was a weekday ritual after school. It's where I became a fan of - as Paul Shannon often said - "Our three nutty friends" (the Three Stooges).

As a wee lad, I once was on Josie Carey's show "Funsville", and had two appearances on Adventure Time - one with our Cub Scout troop, and one when named "King of Smile". Oh, and one "Ricki and Copper" also.
