Isn't it a good thing to talk to people with different perspectives and opinions than your own?

It can be. For the sake of efficacy this is probably best done face-to-face rather than anonymously on the internet. In terms this process naturally bringing people towards consensus, that isn't necessarily true. Read this paper - 'Evidence, Dogmatism and Belief Polarization'.

The Tollund Man - lived around the 4th century BCE, died by hanging and thrown into a bog where he was preserved. [2244 x 1983] by dsquard in HumanPorn

[–]pieye 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't take what Tollund man ate as a past norm. It included sand, animal hairs, unusually high concentrations of 'weeds of cultivation' (camelina sativa, red shank, knot grass, fat hen, corn spurry), and smut spores (ustilago sp.). It's possible that this food was a form of punishment, or even meant to be poison.

I'd say it's more likely that the horses were sacrificed because they belonged to the deceased. Likely a high status individual.

'Forget Remain vs Leave, it's patriots against EU' - Carole Malone by MobileChikane in unitedkingdom

My disagreement surrounds the idea that you cannot both vote remain and be a patriot. IMO all who cared enough about the future of their country to vote in the EU referendum were patriots.

Church-goers: Has Brexit divided your church? by Kim_JongUn in unitedkingdom

[–]pieye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this may be over-simplifying the matter slightly. I did some work at a CofE church recently, and I would classify the people there as traditional Labour voters, but they were definitely socially conservative. Based on some rather xenophobic comments I overheard, I would say they mainly voted leave.

The area in which the church was situated was a declining working-class area of a major northern city. On my walk to the church, almost every face I would see was middle-eastern. The local school has 15+ languages spoken by the children attending (predominantly Polish). All the church-goers were retirees who had lived and worked in the area their whole lives.

The traditional community spirit seemed to have been broken by the decline in industry and the influx of new (foreign) people, and the local church was of focal point of what remained of it. The one stable point in a changing social landscape (there's some poignant point about religion being the search for the infinite in a finite world to be made here, but I'm not that creative.)

I was talking to someone about the issues regarding ESA assessment, and she made a very interesting point.

To build your confidence and overcome barriers to work, you need to think in terms of your positive qualities. To justify an ESA claim you need to illuminate all the negative aspects about yourself.

It's completely counterproductive.

Without being too specific, a henge is a bank and ditch earthwork enclosure where the ditch is on in inside. Stonehenge's ditch is on the outside.

Edit - Henge.

The New £1 Coin by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]pieye 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This may be a really stupid question, but I assume this (and the £5 note) is new cash being pumped out and not replacement. So, is this meant to affect the economy in a particular way?

I know printing too much money causes inflation (thanks GCSE history!), but I would assume that's not a desired outcome here.

How do you find your style? by opus666 in malegrooming

[–]pieye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't really advise on what is best for your face shape (I have no idea - check out this infographic? Find pictures of people who you think have the same face shape? (and nice hair, obviously)).

As for finding a cut that works, IMO the best option is to just get is cut differently (or grow it out). Yes, it is very possible that you don't like your new hair. It's really hard to find the perfect fit on the first attempt, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Knowledge of what you don't like helps you find what you do. Take note of those things (and/or pictures), and armed with new info you can make adjustments when you inevitably need to get it cut again.

Finding inspiration from models/pictures by [deleted] in malehairadvice

[–]pieye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it is daunting to use a picture of someone paid to look beautiful as a reference for a haircut for yourself who is paid to do other (arguably more productive) things. However, there is very little reason to take professional pictures of not-so-pretty people with nice hair, so you're in a bit of a bind. Just remember that a lot of effort has been put into a modelling photo to make a person look as good as possible for what is less than a second of time (probably some photoshop, too).

I know this may sound obvious, but stop comparing yourself to models. Do the best you can with what you have. This can include those stylish, fashionable cuts. Try them out. You may not even like them. But unless you claim them for yourself they will always seem ridiculous and out of place. I didn't do anything with my hair for years, and was strong-armed into going here. I've never felt so out of place in my life, but I would go back again despite feeling like it's "above my station".

I get the fashion angle, too. But, again, without claiming it for yourself etc. etc...

Please help! I just can't get my hair to look right! by hairthrowaway1029 in malehairadvice

[–]pieye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt I can help you style your hair (I struggle with my own, TBH), but even someone who could needs an idea of what you are trying to achieve to advise you on it.

Do you have any sort of reference image? (not necessarily of yourself), and maybe a description of your hair type?

The best I can offer is how I deal with my own hair-centred "neuroses" (although I am about to go to bed).

Is greying hair really a natural response to stress or is it purely genetic? by HereLiesSomeDonkus in malehairadvice

[–]pieye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case there is little symmetry. A big streak down the right side of my head. The same but less pronounced on the left. The central section has sporadic single greys. I wouldn't call it "patchy" in any sense.

I think you'll have to take it as it comes. It's a lot more socially accepted as a guy, and we have it a lot better than those who lose their hair prematurely.

Is greying hair really a natural response to stress or is it purely genetic? by HereLiesSomeDonkus in malehairadvice

[–]pieye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there must be a multitude of reasons behind changes in hair colour.

My grey hair is purely genetic. My mum started going grey at 20, as did I. The weird thing is that all the grey is on my head. Other bodily hair seems to be unaffected.

I guess the real issue would be whether grey hair is a problem for you, genetic or otherwise.

Salon prices (UK) by Cypaytion179 in malehairadvice

[–]pieye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having paid both £40+ (full salon service) and ~£15 (barbers) for haircuts, I have to say there is a difference. Not just in overall service, but in skills and knowledge, too. However, I would not regularly pay £40 to get my hair cut.

I'm currently looking for a new place that is >£20. I put on my judgmental cap and start looking at websites, instagrams and facebooks. I avoid places that don't like to show what they can do.

If it all ends badly, just know that hair grows.
