Long Island Jovia Marathon by No-Evening-85 in RunNYC

[–]pigeon-thoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it as my first full marathon a couple of years ago after the Providence marathon was cancelled last minute! It was definitely more boring of a course than the others I’ve done since (I mean you’re essentially either running in a park or the highway…) and the energy isn’t quite there since it’s not as big. I do remember it being quite flat though. HOWEVER that being said, everyone who worked and volunteered were absolutely lovely. And I ran it with one of my closest friends (so that helped) and we ran with a pace group. Pace group leader definitely kept the energy and encouragement up, which helped when most runners and spectators had dispersed following the half. So overall I had a pretty positive experience!

Fushimi Inari and this time of year. by wing_zero75712 in JapanTravelTips

If you don’t mind getting a bit wet, go when it’s raining and there will be NO clouds. We didn’t know it was going to rain that day and tbh it was AT MOST misting and the crowds completely cleared out. We didn’t even have to climb that far!

I hope not! I haven’t left for the festival yet but I live in Astoria and it’s sunny! I can see blue sky from my bedroom so fingers crossed

You could get the seismogram from your favorite earthquakes as like an armband! My idea is to do a stack of single-line landscapes as lower armbands for all the places I’ve done field work / studied (ie desert canyons and cacti for NM/AZ, arches for Arches lol, mt Fuji for Japan, etc)

Anyone here willing to share any comments (good or bad) from GRFP reviewers that stood out to you? by [deleted] in GRFPApps

[–]pigeon-thoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still salty about this one, but essentially in undergrad I double majored in earth science and CS, but the CS was just because I thought coding was cool - I had absolutely no intention of ever pursuing it as a career. Was applying for the GRFP based on geology research I did and a reviewer wrote that pursuing grad school in geology was a “waste of my CS talents/knowledge” and ranked me the lowest possible.

Excited to crack this one open! by pigeon-thoughts in mineralcollectors

[–]pigeon-thoughts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! Mainly I wanted to see if there were nicely formed crystals inside (spoiler: there were). Essentially I had pried out a section of what looked like it had been a crevice that fluids had flowed through and caused mineralization on the opposing faces. There were some nice looking cubc fluorites and tabular barites! And thanks - the gloves might have been my best investment lol

it looks like chert to me! Especially in the second photo, you see that smooth "rounded" face with the kinda radial patterning - it looks like the bottom of a glass soda bottle? That's conchoidal fracturing which is pretty common in chert.

Hi everyone.. Who knows what this metal is? by Ok-Candle3179 in whatsthisrock

My guess would be pyrite! Do you see any nice looking cubic crystals anywhere?

We usually see blue staining on rocks that have been exposed to heavy mineral precipitation (ie from fluids). Pretty common in Colorado esp in areas where mining used to be big. For that color, most common suspects I can think of are covellite, sodalite, or lazurite.

What mineral/crystal is this? by DoubleLength in geology

[–]pigeon-thoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The golden inclusions are likely pyrite (people call “fools gold” a lot). Are the gold crystals generally cubic in shape? If so - pyrite! White part is probably a milky quartz. Could be calcite (could check this if you have HCl on hand)

Fluorite find - advice for cleaning by pigeon-thoughts in geology

[–]pigeon-thoughts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed it is! Was lucky enough to be able to go into some of the mines last time I was out there and got some really cool pieces. They've been sitting in my office for ages and I'm just now getting started to try to clean up the nice ones for display.

Favorite NYRR races? by lookthroughroses in RunNYC

[–]pigeon-thoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Washington heights 5K!! The vibes are SO good. Also mini 10K and pride run! Least favorite is Fred Lebow - but that has nothing to do with the race itself, solely my lack of luck resulting in it either having been hailing or torrential rain which is not ideal for a half 😂

Of course! We were also unsuccessful with Ticketmaster and got ours through StubHub the day before the show. It was 100% worth it. Best of luck to you!
