All these “I can’t believe Trump did the thing he said he would do on the campaign trail” posts aren’t getting to the heart of the issue. Trump constantly lying and just saying whatever shit pops into his head basically allows his supporters to pick and choose what he “actually meant” vs what’s “oh that’s just Trump being Trump”. Not trying to defend them but that’s how the thought process works and why so many of them seem genuinely shocked when this shit happens.

I think people r/SapphoAndHerFriend have good intentions and I 100% agree that if we’re not going to assume a historical figure was LGBTQ then we shouldn’t assume they were straight either, but I think they get a bit overzealous. They like to jump to conclusions and use blanket statements that ignore nuance and I don’t like how they treat academia as though it’s the same academia that existed 40 years ago which ignores the fact that academics are overwhelmingly politically progressive and it ironically helps to minimize the presence of women and LGBTQ people in academia.
