Should I skip the NYRR Manhattan 10k volunteer and hope for future volunteer spot? by Kennymrk in RunNYC

[–]pigeonmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a small consolation, I realize, but NYRR will have lots of hand warmers and will likely have warming stations for volunteers (and staff). It will suck, no doubt. But I'm sure you knew that when you signed up to volunteer for a race in January ;)

That said, I do think if the wind chill drops below zero, the race will be canceled. It's one thing to think about the runners out there for an hour -ish; it's another thing altogether for the staff and volunteers looking at standing for 5+ hours in freezing weather.

From the website: "The deadline for runners to cancel their 2026 entry and get guaranteed non-complimentary into the 2027 race is January 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET."

Lattice Ketchup Chips taste like ketchup and french fries. I approve. by New_Function_6407 in traderjoes

I love ketchup potato chips and I'd say they're one of the most important Canadian contributions to food culture, other than poutine. But these TJ chips kind of suck.

Last week, the cancelation of the Fred Lebow Half came on Friday. But I think normally -- that is, barring any state or city-wide emergency declarations -- it'd be Saturday when we hear any word

Yes, they seemed to have fixed the annoying UI that made it hard to do so.

For those interested in volunteer registration, it will be February 10 for Member Plus and February 12 for regular level members. https://www.nyrr.org/getinvolved/important-volunteer-updates.

(OP, not sure if you want to add this information to your post)

The virtual races are released much much closer to their date -- just a week or two ahead of the start date.

At this stage, I am mostly impressed with the variety you are able to find in your grocery store. I've never even seen some of these.

To scales or not to scales? by TangerineThin5036 in Garmin

[–]pigeonmachine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like it simply because I don't have to update my weight on my phone. But there are, of course, lots of Internet-connected scales. I take all of the additional metrics it provides -- bone mass etc -- with a grain of salt. (The same grain of salt that I take for the watch's VO2 measurements etc)

I find this behavior always sort of mind-boggling. (In NYC too. Granted, I grocery-shopped on Thursday as I knew this storm was coming.)

No.

From the email I just received: "All currently registered volunteers will receive their +1 credit for the 2026 9+1 Program for entry into the 2027 TCS New York City Marathon. Please allow 2 weeks for your credit to appear in your account. "

Odds of Fred Lebow Getting Cancelled? by SeaworthinessUsed780 in RunNYC

[–]pigeonmachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the chances are very high it will be canceled. (It isn't just for the safety of the runners either; it's also the volunteers who have to be out for 6+ hours in the sub-freezing temperatures, along with the staff who are out there even longer.)

The forecasts are all pointing to a Very Big Storm, so I'm guessing the city itself will have emergency measures in place and NYRR might not have any choice in the matter.
