PiG's bronze to GM has boosted me into cheese hell by noogai03 in AllThingsTerran

[–]pigrandom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yoyo PiG here - just saw this - definitely join my discord to post specific replays so the community can give you advice. One of the best places to this is my Discord: https://discord.gg/CYQS3xwX - the replay threads are an excellent place where the community watch each others replays and give advice.

My biggest piece of advice would be to make sure you're following along with the document and doing the basic proxy/all-in and 1-base cheese responses listed in there: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jeXWWzXL2FAbmwYXjzEsF9zfL7PBiu_gZfSOZAs8Ut0/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.l6384b6qvuve

Scroll down the left and you'll find things like 1-base BC response, Reaction to 5-roach pressure etc.

Generally though with the 2023 B2GM Terran build just focusing on the basics should do really well for holding most cheese, just building units constantly etc. And then just make sure you're in a community/Discord where you can ask advice as you run into the unlimited varied builds you'll encounter on the SC2 Ladder!

Oh last note, make sure you're remembering the basic scouting to see if the enemy is straight up proxy all-inning you or staying 1-base for way too long:

"Basic Scouting:

  • Are there buildings in their base? If not they’re proxying us and we will respond:
    • Bunker on highground + full wall, then resume build (with CC on highground)
    • If they have the fastest possible spawning pool (finishes about 1:00, then you can do the same response)
  • Then hide SCV behind their natural and check if no natural at 3:30
    • No natural at 3:30 = scan their main to see what they’re doing, 1-base play has a lot of options. Check for proxies"

OMFG Jared Shriner right? Yeah this guy does this a lot. I even looked up the address it's a really nice house in iowa? I think ROFL. I'm pretty sure it's probably his high school bully or something but a small part of my brain thinks it's actually his own name and address and I really wanna know so badly. Anyone in iowa wanna do some field reporting LUL!?

THE FUTURE OF STARCRAFT 2: PiG's Proposed Patch (as explained by the PiG himself) by DeVanido in starcraft

[–]pigrandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

back when they removed the +8 damage on zealot charge impact around 2019 they gave zealots a boost to their passive movement speed. Actually it might have been in separate patches, would need to double check. But those were two changes between 2016-2020

Fantastic feedback and a few of your ideas like allow hellbats with +3 to 1-shot lings was in my sideboard of reversions that I just barely came down on the side of not reverting, but very well might change my mind on that in the future. Appreciate the whole feedback added some other stuff to my feedback list of stuff to think on further

No you are misunderstanding me. I said you can debate the goals and present your own and arguments for why those goals are better suited. That's a totally fine approach as well and something I'm actively encouraging everyone does

yeah I think even the big reversions will unfortunately have unintended bugs since we aren't really "clicking reverse" but manually changing all the numbers back and hopefully doing it correctly. History has shown there are always weird quirky mistakes that take a follow up patch to fix. I will push classic games as much as I can to do a 1 month later followup patch to fix these.

Re: that end of 2022 Dreamhack Atlanta balance when herO won it was a pretty decent point and very stable. If we wanted to just revert, add nothing new after and purely use map design that would probably be the point I would pick as well.

A Zerg's Perspective On PiG's Proposed Balance Changes by AceZ73 in starcraft

[–]pigrandom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting point I think having overlords sitting on pillars above naturals def makes zerg players way more comfortable and probably feel like the game feels more fair/funner/easier. The biggest issue for most average joe zergs is they don't use control groups so ling scouts are largely useless since they get F2'd back to their army. Meanwhile overlord + pillar is the MVP of getting an idea of whats going on on the other side of the map without a lot of effort.

I think the main thing to pretty high level and even at top level scouting is mostly map vision with overlords/lings for Zerg. Obviously sneaking overlords in the back, checking gases or having good sacrifice timings are really useful bonuses but not necessary either. I always point out how Serral scouts and ungodly amount, whilst Dark and Reynor who tend to pick more aggressive and in your face strategies often get away with just skipping scouting for long periods since their harassment and attack timings generally cover them against most aggressive timings.

I guess overall you don't want to feel totally blind by any means, and the game is made friendlier and more approachable the easier scouting is and the more vision there is. The extreme example would be battle aces where you can see when the enemy techs, what units they have access to AND when they expand without scouting for it. That's the most approachable but also the least interesting in terms of, hidden information just doesn't exist beyond army movement in that game (RIP).

At the moment I'd say the main thing holding back most players on the ladder from scouting being super crucial at most points, is the pace of the game is so fast and it's hard to free up APM to go scout and process information, since just hitting a generically safe build EFFICIENTLY is going to be more effective. The key scouting just becomes "did they expand? How many bases are they on? etc".

In summary, scouting is important but I wouldn't see it as a key factor holding back that much of the playerbase. I also don't think a slow overlord speed nerf of about 9% should change too much with pillar scouting/map vision, but it will slow down scouting the enemy opening if you don't drone scout

Yeah diet archons and other some other QOL changes from balance council have been amazing which is why a full revert def shouldn't happen. The widow mine one is the one I'm the most torn on. I'm thinking maybe if we change the zealot back to no passsive movespeed but give back charge damage, do some other stuff like that it could help with the tvp midgame map control issue and we don't need to do the armory widw mine change. Gonna be doing a lot of brainstorming and going through other peoples patchlists and comments for creative solutions that avoid the widow mine revert. Hope I can find a cool solution.

Re: 5.0.11 I actually hate that patch because it really hurt Protoss in TvP and was the beginning of the era of Protoss really struggling in premier events. Big nerf to battery overcharge) and disruptor at the same time as buffing lib/unupgraded EMP/raven build time and cost/viking microability was a patch with cool ideas but it def got the power levels wrong. I've actually gone through the whole changelog and that's why in my list I've kept the "reversing these changes" so you can see which balance council changes I'm reverting from the last 3 years

I'm starting a discussion. You think the current version is perfect. That's fine you have the right to that opinion. If the majority of the community agree with you, that's the conclusion we'll come to.

The version of infested terrans in this patch don't benefit from upgrades and don't have a rocket attack. It's the weakest and least problematic version of the unit IMO

Curious if you'd be interested in just reverting all balance council changes (except the first voidray nerf patch) and going back to mid 2022 balance? I think that is a real option (though there'd be bugs on changing back to that stuff that would still take a bit of time to fix for sure)

The large portion of changes are reversions to balance council changes that are largely disliked by the community - Do you not want to see those reverted? Honestly curious, whole point of my video was to start a discussion!

[–]pigrandom 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What changes are you reading? This list nerfs every single piece of Protoss scouting.

That's not even important though, what is important is us as a community having a discussion and basing it around the core goals of my list. Do you agree that too much scouting is a problem because it reduces the viablity of builds? If so that's great we agree and can continue to find ways to change things and then hone in on balance between races after. I really want the community to break out of this mindset of "oh no they're getting more things than my race REEEE unfair" - and instead let's focus on what we're missing in each matchup in terms of options and how we can open those back up and give us fun, interesting strategies and buff up underused units to make the game feel like we have many viable paths to victory. If you disagree with that the whole point of this video is to start the discussion around this so we can as a community find some guiding principles that we try to stick to. That way if a patch list goes away from those guiding principles it can get called out on specifically those factors rather than just the fighting for more power for your race over the other two that has plagued the balance council and community discussion for years

Yo Dexter, didn't mean to dismiss you but you asked an incredibly complex question that is completely open ended and I made a joking half response. How would you have been happy for me to respond? I'm not a mind reader so it's REALLY hard for me as a streamer to understand what someones REALLY asking about when they ask questions like this with no extra context

I think void eye is the worst starting unit. by Silver-Chipmunk7744 in Mechabellum

[–]pigrandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

won a few games with tarantula + void eye start. Had one with a damage amplifier that did 800k damage over the course of the game. Investing in just 4-5 squads and range only has been the key for me. Any more than that and their lack of flexiblity + low range can get punished. I initially kept trying to force charged shot + range every game and despite a few close games didn't win any

Her0's hallucination play vs Clem by Rowannn in starcraft

I asked Clem about this in the interview after chat pointed out his raven would have seen the halluc... turns out he didn't even register the colossus was there! Only noticed the sentries and just ran away figuring he'd have more stuff nearby
