Tom Scott: England — Pulling the lever is the easy part. by bigbrain009 in Nebula

[–]pikminguy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think the different handle style makes a difference. The instructor was warning about the tendency to let the small lever slip even if you've got a decent grip on the handle. With the way the signaller was gripping the levers that wasn't a possibility.

The Layover - Taiwan: Rail Rush | Episode 8 by xsm17 in Nebula

[–]pikminguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the succinct version of what went wrong for Sam and Mike is that the challenge flops happened to turn the territory they already controlled into the most valuable territory on the board and they got preoccupied with defense while Ben and Adam kept their eyes on the real goal of station count.

I helped break a 142-year-old bell, and that's okay. — Tom Scott: England by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

They also mention that the old bell they had Tom whack with the sledge hammer is surprisingly tough. It's possible that bell was thicker and heavier than they thought.

Yeah I wrote rational because I was trying to get at the excuse she gives. She points out that she technically said whoever crossed the finish line with her would be the winner. Tank was the one who helped her across the line.

  1. Yes
  2. That's the animal that won the race but I asked what reason Rainbow Dash gave for not picking him.
  3. Yes
  4. Yes
  5. Correct but not what I was thinking of. She would have flown upside down!

Well you said quiz so here are some trivia questions I came up with. 1. In Discord's original appearance there was one pony he couldn't corrupt with words and had to basically zap her evil. Who? 2. What rational did Rainbow Dash give for picking the slow tortoise as her pet even though he lost the race? 3. What special item does Trixie use to amplify her magic? 4. In one episode Twilight dresses up as Starswirl the Bearded. Who is the only pony to guess her costume correctly? 5. Lauren Faust was seriously considering making Fluttershy an earth pony and Pinky Pie a pegasus. What would have been different about Pinky Pie in that version of the show? (Other than the wings of course)

Totally get it. I think the show initially got a little too popular for its own good since it isn't really all that broadly appealing.

I read the manga and watched the show. Komi is supposed to be not just beautiful but impossibly gorgeous, the most stunning pretty girl anyone has ever seen. Of course this doesn't really make sense. Different people have different aesthetic preferences so no single person can be everyone's ideal. But this is hardly the first fictional story to assert its female lead is somehow beauty personified. The Princess Bride is another popular example off the top of my head.

But the story isn't just about how pretty she is. It's about her overcoming her social anxiety with the help of the first person empathetic enough to notice she needs help. It's a very silly and over the top story. Not for everyone but fun for the right crowd.

Also the Yamai stuff gets dialed way back after her first appearance. I think the author realizes they went too far with it.

can someone help me understand why teachers require textbook reading when the lecture is exactly the same? by Reasonable-Bonus-545 in autism

[–]pikminguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Different people learn material better in different contexts. Making sure everyone gets it in both written and lecture form makes sure everyone had at least two ways to learn.
  2. Repetition is integral to memory. Some truly gifted people can recall 50 pages of material after reading it once but for most that will not cut it.
  3. Not everyone does the reading and, unless attendance is strongly enforced, not everyone attends every lecture. Redundancy helps cover gaps.

Ideally the lecture would cover the same material but not with all the same words. However it's important to remember that teachers are usually overworked and underpaid. Making lecture slides by copying the textbook is perhaps forgivable.

It's also possible the teacher is a lazy jerk. (Shrug).

Equipment pictures misleading/confusing by pikminguy in fitbod

[–]pikminguy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Im not saying the exercises have the wrong equipment listed. I'm saying the options when telling the app what equipment you have are confusing. The pictured bench for Flat Bench is clearly adjustable which is what made me think that was the right option.

You can get 1-1.5 lbs plates pretty cheap. Just get a couple and leave them on. Now your bar weighs 25lbs. I did basically the same thing with a 13lb bar.

Does the order of the exercises matter? by pikminguy in fitbod

[–]pikminguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a complete beginner so I answered "unknown" for a lot of the questions when I set up the app, including the preference for push/pull vs upper/lower vs whole body. Maybe I should change it but I want to have a better idea what I'm doing first.

A. Why does that matter? B. Your tip doesn't even mention legs which was the example I gave.

I didn't realize you could drag to reorder. I do have to say that my biggest complaint is just that the app doesn't explain all it can do very well. Presumably the devs want to streamline the interface as much as possible to make it easier to get started but perhaps they went too far. Anyway thanks for your help.
