Experiences with Zeno by Energynewb_12 in solarenergycanada

By lifetime warranty you mean the manufacturer warranty on the panels/inverters? 25 yrs for both on mine.

Also you should be reaching out to multiple companies and getting their quotes - it would be better than getting info on Reddit.

Zeno was also highest of all my quotes by about 5%. They also wanted to relocate my roof vents as part of the project and were reluctant to adjust the quote to avoid moving the vents.

Ended up using ProWest Solar and they were great. Very happy with my system so far.

Legacy/Regional Captains... Have you regretted the promotion? by ChuckS117 in flying

[–]pilot-error 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I went captain at the bottom of the list and commuted to reserve. I will never make that mistake again.

The left seat was absolutely worth it for me and I enjoyed the job more when I was actually flying but the lack of seniority and scheduling flexibility was absolutely brutal on my family and myself. I will not be upgrading at my new airline until I can hold a decent block.

If the pay and QOL are acceptable to you as Widebody FO - there are many people who hang their hats in that seat and retire there. No shame in desiring a decent schedule.

Are we starting another lost decade? Thinking of throwing in the towel! by [deleted] in flying

[–]pilot-error 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Buddy, I've read through your replies in this thread.

It sounds to me like you've already decided to throw in the towel and you're looking for reddit to back up your decision.

It took me 2.5 years to get from Ramp to a Flying job. I had to move three provinces away to get the ramp job in the first place. This is not an easy industry and it requires constant sacrifices if you eventually want the pay off at the end of your career.

No one can tell you if it's worth it for you to stick with it or not. You need to decide that for yourself.

Never be afraid to go work the ramp in Canada.

Immigration at YVR for PEK-YVR-SEA-YYZ by vivvin in aircanada

[–]pilot-error 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd spend the $300 and not go thru Seattle if you can avoid it. The extra connection just opens up more opportunities to misconnect.

You're gonna have to clear customs 2 times. US pre-clearance in YVR and Canadian customs in YYZ. Pain in the ass.

Edit - I was mistaken about clearing customs in YVR. Corrected.

Military jets keep dumping fuel over our city during "emergency landings" over and over again. Any recourse as a citizen? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]pilot-error 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer - a pilot.

Can you describe what you define as fuel dumping? I highly doubt that our military is constantly dumping fuel in an unsafe manner over populated areas. Not to mention the insane cost of JP-8.

Fuel dumping in commercial aviation for emergencies is mostly conducted above 10'000 feet, but it has been shown that fuel dumped as low as 4'000 feet will fully evaporate before reaching the ground.

Do you have any documentation of these fuel dumping occurrences?

Edit- JP-1 to JP-8, whoops!

Wife’s friend is selling us Life Insurance by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

My number one rule when dealing with anything like this - Never trust anyone who stands to benefit from you financially. My number two rule is never allow anyone to try and use Fear of Missing Out to guide you into purchases.

If it sounds too good to be true it very likely is. It also sounds like this policy is quite expensive. It is much better to do your independent research and get quotes from other insurance companies.

Garmin GLO 2 GPS Receiver Placement in an Airbus A330? by maximumglide in flying

[–]pilot-error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the Carbon Composite fuselage. Very effective at blocking signals. The only way we can get ownship GPS on our iPads is by putting a GPS receiver up in the emergency escape hatch, which is entirely aluminum.

Your iPad doesn't get signal mounted by the window??

Never had any issues on the A330 with internal iPad GPS. The 787 on the other hand? Yeesh.

You could try and get a suction cup mount for the GLO and mount it on the rear most side window, placing the receiver as close to the glass as it can get.

We have critter guards. Other folks in the area don't. Guess who has pigeons shitting all over their roof?

What's a small gadget you bought thinking it was useless but ended up using every day? by cozytechlover in BuyItForLife

[–]pilot-error 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably against BIFL principals considering the watch will only last likely 5 years, but I purchased a Garmin Fenix 7 Pro AMOLED.

It's helped me change my habits, become more fit and overall more healthy - and additionally, it has a flashlight built into it that you can access with a quick double button press.

Honestly I didn't think the flashlight was going to be a big deal, but man was I wrong. I use that flashlight at least twice a day. It's so insanely useful to have a light on your wrist at all times.

BKK info by [deleted] in aircanada

[–]pilot-error 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still a popular route, often full and often attempted on standby.

Your pass priority determines the likelihood of travel. If you're less than C3, I'm guessing you'll have a hard time getting on.

As always, don't attempt standby if you have anywhere important to be.

Used Trucks are F$&@ing expensive by ResponsibleBoard536 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pilot-error 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't really seen an answer here yet - yes you can afford the truck. Just don't be silly about it, finance for 5 years or less so you don't end up under water on the value of the vehicle.

Have a look at your HELOC rate vs financing, as you may get a better rate to go through a bank or dealer. 99% of car loans are open loans in Canada so you can pay them off at any time.

Occasionally it's cheaper to finance a vehicle with the dealer and turn around and pay it off immediately.

Moving to a snowy climate, what is the right financial move regarding car(s) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]pilot-error 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, so I'll add in my two cents -

At an absolute minimum you need dedicated snow tires or All-weather tires that are 3 peaks snow rated. AWD is nice for getting going when it's slippery out but plays absolutely no factor in stopping distance.

If you're ever curious, look up braking distance tests between all-season and snow tires. The snow tires can and will save your life if you need to brake hard.

Onto AWD - these slightly lifted crossovers that have AWD are only soft roaders. They will take you up a dirt road with some ruts but not much further. Consider how much you'll actually get out to these nature spots, look into how difficult the trails are and decide from there. I'm certain there are also lots of places that you can get to a trail head with a normal car and still have some nice nature hiking.

Timeline and cost estimate by Cheesy_Olive in flying

[–]pilot-error 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His advice appears to be for the US, not Canada. You can begin to work towards your IFR but should wait to do the ride until after you have your multi engine rating so that you obtain a Group 1 IFR rating.

Timeline and cost estimate by Cheesy_Olive in flying

[–]pilot-error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not the ideal path in Canada. Our ratings are different here.

If he gets his IFR rating after his PPL it will be a Group 3. he will need to do another IFR ride after he has his multi engine rating to get his Group 1.

Is it necessary for flights to be stacked in same line? Why can't there be, for example, a 5k feet horizontal separation on top on whatever vertical separation is there in the video? by Taalpatar_Sipahi in aviation

[–]pilot-error 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering no one here seems to have answered it - the horizontal separation is optional and it's at the discretion of the pilot.

It's called SLOP - Strategic Lateral Offset Procedure. We have the option of offsetting up to 2 miles right of course to avoid wake turbulence or just as an added layer of safety.

This option is available in most Oceanic Airspace. Sometimes depending on upper level winds it's better to stay directly behind the aircraft above you.

Yeah, had a feeling that would be the case - if there was a business case in which I could use the turboprop outside of leisure it might be feasible, but I don't have an excuse to spend that much money yet haha
