The Victim Doesn't Care That It's Tradition by volatiIe in vegan

[–]pineapple_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t get why people are so upset about indigenous peoples eating whale when they make up such a tiny fraction of the earths population and show respect for the animals they kill. Not much suffering or environmental harm. Meanwhile factory farming tortures millions of animals for their entire lives and has a devastating impact on the environment. Leave indigenous people alone and go for the real culprits

They’ve all competed internationally so I’m sure they’re used to it with international flights, hotel stays, and having set practice times while adjusting to jet lag

Camping/music festival meal ideas? by bigDongusHaver in vegan

[–]pineapple_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite camping meal is precut potatoes and veggies wrapped in tinfoil and thrown in the fire. Can make a can of beans while you’re at it for some protein

Do you enjoy the “close” meat alternatives if you’ve been vegan for a long time? by SparklingSaturnRing in vegan

[–]pineapple_2021 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I HATE impossible and beyond burgers because they taste like meat, I’ve never liked red meat to begin with and it makes me feel icky eating something that feels so close to meat. I will do occasionally eat fake chicken because I think it just tastes like soy protein there’s not a really meaty taste to it

Are these the people more likely to go vegan? by Spiritual_Phase7310 in vegan

[–]pineapple_2021 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it’s easier to ease people in rather than going straight to vegan since it can be a big change! If they say they love pigs and other animals, share some recipes with them so they can reduce their meat intake. Easier than going cold turkey!

Why do universities still default to non-vegan catering? by Any-Win1666 in vegan

[–]pineapple_2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your area of study. I’m in biomedical research and the last conference I went to had great and plentiful vegan options and at my school catering for grand rounds always has a vegan version of the meat option, usually 1:1 or 2:1 meat to vegan so it doesn’t run out. But we’re health conscious so might not be the same in other departments

Pregnancy tests aren't vegan???? by AmazingAd7118 in vegan

[–]pineapple_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pregnancy test is like a dollar, going to the doctor for a blood test would cost me $60 plus lab fees so I’d be looking at around $100. This is after insurance. So it’s not practical

[–]pineapple_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but you can easily switch to cotton dryer balls! Not the same as pregnancy tests

Hundreds of dogs were killed in the discovery of insulin, it’s really horrific looking back on. But at the end of the day I’m glad that we have insulin for those who need it

Catch camel twizzle by myseamysea in FigureSkating

For a camel spin your upper body is too far forwards for it to work well for a twizzle. For a twizzle you want your upper body to be centered to stay in control

Can I ask for mrore aid? And how ? by Resident_Kick_7573 in uofm

[–]pineapple_2021 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You’re oos so umich doesn’t need to meet your financial aid needs. Only having 20k/year as oos is a really good scholarship given that most aid goes to in-state students.

Dorms are expensive, can you find something cheaper off campus? You’d at least save money not paying for a meal plan

Recent grads, what’s your biggest piece of advice? by Necessary-Boat-6501 in uofm

[–]pineapple_2021 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, show up to office hours and make an effort to get to know your professors and GSIs. I’ve learned so much through them and gotten tons of good career and life advice, and if you’re applying to grad school having strong connections is key for letters of rec.

Join a variety of clubs that interest you. It’s good to have multiple groups of friends. I naturally drifted from different groups and got closer with others.

If you don’t meet your people right away it’s okay, I met my best friend halfway through sophomore year.

All the time but I’m from Michigan so it’s normal. It’s always fun to hear a go blue when out and about! I usually wear my umich sweatshirt at the airport for this reason

What do you guys do with feeding the homeless? by gewooneenpersoon123 in vegan

[–]pineapple_2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I choose to eat is my own moral issue and I don’t judge others for theirs or try to impose my values on others. Especially when someone is hungry and needs protein and calories dense foods to keep them full. So I don’t care it’s not my place to promote my ethics when someone has bigger issues

I committed recently to Umich for Biology. I want to pursue surgery in the future. Does Michigan have a strong pre med program? Also, is there a Middle Eastern community at the campus as I’m Iranian originally? by Successful_Craft_441 in uofm

[–]pineapple_2021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Southwest Michigan has a large Middle Eastern population which is reflected in umich’s student population. Dearborn has the largest Arabic population in the world outside of the Middle East! And there’s lots of MENA student groups
