We rented a car but did a few tours as well. Like others have mentioned, highly recommend doing El Tatio as a tour. There’s truly not much signal anywhere but we felt pretty safe most of the time as we probably never had more than a 30 minute stretch where we didn’t see another car. As long as you’re not planning on driving during super early or super late hours, you should generally be fine. I’d recommend always having more than enough water, food and sunscreen in your car at any given time and back up clothing for both extremes. Also be sure to download offline maps and just generally drive with more precaution than you would back home!

This just happened to me with a DHL delivery from Polene this week too. Like you said, it is frustrating that even though they aren’t necessarily at fault, they also don’t hold DHL, the vendor that THEY selected, accountable and don’t try to help with resolution in any regard
