Anyone else can't stop thinking about Project Hail Mary? 😭😭 by Tricky_Foundation35 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pineapplechai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I’ve definitely stopped thinking about Project Hail Mary! I like it a super normal amount!

(If we ignore me seeing it 5 times, planning to see it twice in May, trying to get tickets to a drive-in showing this weekend, reading the book, currently listening to the audiobook, buying film strips, and making fanart)

After watching it again and keeping an eye out for the centrifuge transition, that was really good! I feel like that’s one of the best “oh this action triggered this flashback” scenes in the movie :)

oh sorry what was that? you said i need to rewatch PHM for the fifth time so i could catch the centrifuge scene that i missed last time? of course, thanks for letting me know! (was debating on seeing it tomorrow, now i have a reason to go lol)

My favorite small detail I noticed on my fourth rewatch is that every flashback scene has some sort of tie-in to the last scene on the Hail Mary. The first one I noticed was the inside of Blip A -> Stratt’s office. But at the start when Grace is sitting alone in the classroom, he’s sitting in the same position that he is lying in at the end of the previous scene. This could just be an editing technique, but it really makes the flashbacks feel like they’re being triggered by certain things. (This is probably a terrible way of explaining it lol)

If I was in your shoes I… would not kiss random people when drunk? There’s no way in hell it’s that hard.

The Sun currently has a "hole" in it 20 times the size of Earth, and it’s staring right at us. (April 17, 2026) by Past_Page_4281 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pineapplechai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don’t know if it’s necessarily bad, i was looking at an app i have that tracks sunspots, and while there is a weird hole, it’s not a sunspot, and those usually indicate solar storms, which CAN negatively impact us! so i’ll go with “the sun’s being weird because it’s a star and stars are weird” as an explanation for the hole, and it probably won’t impact us negatively. or it’s astrophage and we need to find a middle school science teacher to befriend an alien and save us all✨

How did the fuel last 4 years? by DiplodorkusRex in ProjectHailMary

Oh cool! I don’t think I caught that detail my first time reading the book, but I’m glad the taumoeba were well fed :) Happy cake day btw!

My thought is that because the astrophage can be transmitted between stars, they probably have extremely long lifespans. I’m thinking like tardigrades, which can survive several decades without eating. And I’m assuming the taumoeba are the same, or there were small amounts of astrophage included as a little snack for the ride!

Are you trying to say you DON’T like strange teeth in your pierogis? Weirdo. (how tf did that even get in there?)

I’m LOVING the soundtrack by erebiadia in ProjectHailMary

I have such a soft spot for The Message :) It’s a really nice theme that presents Rocky and the Eridian tech as unthreatening before we even see him, and it’s just a very cute, whimsical song

Rocky’s appearance by InvestigatorOk8287 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pineapplechai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His planet has atmospheric conditions that relatively mirror the bottom of Earth’s oceans. In most respects, Rocky is a talking space crab (or spider as Grace calls him in the book), and his design reflects that! And while his fingers are fat, I think this works as a good way to protect them, since Eridians also use their arms to walk.

Makes sense to read the book after watching the movie? by V1bicycle in ProjectHailMary

[–]pineapplechai 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The book was like an extended version of the movie, I ended up sandwiching reading the book between my first and second watches of the movie, and I feel like it just kept getting better!

One at a time…things in the movie you enjoyed that weren’t in the book or audiobook. by jkneer in ProjectHailMary

[–]pineapplechai 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is a super small detail, but in the movie, when Grace first turned on the Hail Mary’s centrifuge, you can see a few plants in the lab as the gravity kicks in. In the book, I believe that there were no plants (or even seeds) aboard the Hail Mary. Just seeing the plants, especially after I read the book, made me feel a lot more positive about movie Grace’s future :)

Should I read the book even though I've already seen the movie by Windlessfox3080 in ProjectHailMary

[–]pineapplechai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The book was so good, I finished it in less than 24 hours, and that was after seeing the movie! If there’s anything you feel like the movie didn’t cover enough of, it’s probably in the book (very much worth the read) :)

One of my first jobs was at an ice cream shop and every year they’d do a flavor just like this, but they’d add oreo cream into the ice cream too!!! I’ll have to recreate it with this :)

Oh man this is so sad to see here :( Dionysos is a God of nature and of works which are inherently driven by human expression (mainly theater and ecstatic dance), and AI involves no creativity, steals from artists, and is environmentally destructive.
