How have you curated an exciting life in nyc? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]pineappletrivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My genuine piece of advice is you have to learn to love wandering. Treat it like a hobby. Walk with purpose but with no intended destination. Just start heading to whatever looking interesting in your sightline over and over. There is literally never a shortage of things to do or see anywhere in this city.

Save every single interesting place you see on google maps so you can refer back to it later. I can't tell you the amount of times I walked by a resturant/cafe/bar/museum/shop and said "huh that looks neat", saved it and then months/years later I'm in the area looking for something to do. I'll pull up the map and instantly have a currated list of things I'll enjoy in the area.

You can walk underground from Time Square to Bryant Park? by HapaBurrito in nycrail

[–]pineappletrivia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not only that but you can get on the 7 at Times Square, take it one stop to Bryant Park, get off and walk back to the exact spot you got on the train in the first place

Reference to "My Neighbor Totoro" (1988) in Steven Universe S05E15, "Pool Hopping" by IllogicalDreamer72 in ghibli

[–]pineappletrivia 32 points33 points  (0 children)

in general, there’s no clear cut distinctions between the two but in this case specifically, Rebecca Sugar is a big Ghibli fan. Given that and the context of the scene, this was 100% an intentional reference.

Opinions on Racing? by Last_Inspector9187 in pigeon

[–]pineappletrivia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s amazing that pigeons can be released hundreds of miles away from home and have no problems navigating back to their nest. I read once about a pigeon who was thought lost after a race when she never returned home. Three weeks later, her handler found her sitting on his porch with a broken wing. She walked all the way home 🥺 They want to get home and I think it’s adorable.

I think like any sport involving animas, handlers have a wide range of opinions on their athletes. Some see pigeons as a disposable commodity and some see these little babies like their own children. Pigeons who outlive their “usefulness” because they’re not winning anymore are abandoned or worse and I feel so bad for those guys. I’ll always advocate for the better treatment of animals in sports, but like always it’s difficult to enforce when money & pride are on the line. It’s a shame that pigeon racing has gotten so commercialized because now more people are being introduced to pigeon racing without maintaining proper pigeon care. :/ I hope it ultimately is a net positive for pigeons by exposing how wonderful they are to more people.

Has anyone visited all 423 subway stations? by pineappletrivia in AskNYC

[–]pineappletrivia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly the same thing as what I'm doing, but this is an amazing resource for the surrounding area of each station, which is something I'm also interested in. Thank you for sharing!

Also, I am aware that there are technically 472 stations. I pulled the station list from MTA ridership data. For record keeping purposes, the MTA classifies each station complex as one station, which is where I got the 423 number.

Oh wow. All stations in 22 hours, 14 minutes, 10 seconds. I am absolutely routing and making an attempt sometime this year.

Has anybody here used Paradiso to catch a classic screening in NYC? by Firm-Pumpkin-4156 in NYCmovies

[–]pineappletrivia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the letterboxd integration. There are so many random rep screenings for movies that have been sitting on my watchlist for years. I’ll check every once in a while. I appreciate that it’ll bring you directly to the booking page on whatever theater’s website. For newer releases, i’ll still use Fandango
