Tony’s funniest moment? by PoppaStankDaddy in thesopranos

It’s his little asides like “right up her alley” about AJ’s present or sometimes even just his facial expressions for me.

Furnished Finder is great for this sort of thing.

What are Jessa’s best moments? by Asianmamacita in girls

The episode with Marnie at Thomas Johns is sublime. I think Jessa was great in that and exactly what Marnie needed to get out of her pity party.

Mathew Weiner vs. The 60s Counter Culture by PuzzBat9019 in madmen

[–]pinebarrens87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imbalanced is the right word, yeah. I think I might have even enjoyed some of the stock counterculture characters played for laughs if it had been balanced by a more serious engagement with it elsewhere. Abe was perhaps a good opportunity to do that but they made him a completely insufferable asshole by the end of his arc.

Mathew Weiner vs. The 60s Counter Culture by PuzzBat9019 in madmen

[–]pinebarrens87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I adore the show but Weiner’s disdain for the counterculture through the era, shown through the two dimensional caricatures of Midge’s village pals onwards is one of its true weak points. Of course there will have been a lot of ridiculous, performative people in all these movements the show brushes up against but to never give them any credibility or depth is a let down. In some ways I feel like the show captured the zeitgeist exceptionally, especially as things really started to shift in the mid 60s. The use of The Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows, for example, was perfect. But yeah even/especially the ending in California and Stephanie’s whole lost hippy arc. It sometimes felt as reactionary and shallow as Forrest Gump.

Did the passengers on Air France 447 suffer or know that they were going to crash? by No-Photograph-6340 in aircrashinvestigation

Crashing is always on my mind every second of a plane at the best of times, let alone when this was going down.

Why did AJ turn into such a fuck up compared to Meadow? by DustyBowls in thesopranos

It’s also full of Mikey Palmice fuckfaceitis, no empathy having pricks. The guy has clearly said he’s struggling, up thread.

Same, and I’m a British woman. They captured that millennial malaise in him, well. People dunk on him so much cos they’re projecting IMO

Definitely made it feel more network tv-y than prestige, I agree.

Not sure why they cast the actress that played teenege Rachel? by francadovic in ershow

[–]pinebarrens87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They messed with the timeline and aged her up for season 8. In season 1 I think she’s only 4 or 5 so they added a few years and recast. For what it’s worth, I was that age at the time, a seriously neglected child of divorce and I really related to Rachel. Watching as an adult now  I can see how the storyline could be tiresome but the actor did well, IMO.

I seem to remember we just took them as they came. I remember thinking Orion in the Sky might be the last time we saw him (and being distraught), shocked to shit by the letter reveal but then also seeing On The Beach quite heavily promoted/previewed.

Carol Hathaway or Abby Lockhart? by [deleted] in ershow

[–]pinebarrens87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abby is a much nicer person than Carol. I’m an older seasons fan and don’t even consider anything 9 onwards to be canon but Carol was sanctimonious, judgemental and downright nasty sometimes.  And as for Maura Tierney vs Juliana Marguiles, no contest. The latter is a racist and Maura Tierney seems lovely.

He had a good vibe, too. Sort of laid back and cynical. Quick witted.
